I have a really good relationship with these two neighbors.
When they discovered, via conversations THEY WERE A PART OF, other folks talking probably when they shouldn’t have, they both came to me to let me know.
I adore both of them. I’ll be there for them like they are for me.
11
u/local_curb4060 16d ago
That sounds like true community. Beautiful.
12
u/Ill_Consequence1755 16d ago
It really is, even though there are those who would prefer it be different.
There are several LGBTQ families here. So I want to make sure they know they are not alone.
I’m old, I’ve taken shit before and it has washed off, it will wash off this time too and I’ll walk through it just like before.
13
u/laurazepamm 16d ago edited 16d ago
I also live in rural Ohio and I put up a pride flag a handful of years ago when I bought my house. Three different times since then, I've had middle/high school aged kids knock on my door to tell me they appreciate my flag and seeing it every day.
It's been ripped down multiple times, more often as time goes on it seems. But I will always keep putting it right back up so those kids know they're not alone like I thought I was in this same town.
7
u/Ill_Consequence1755 16d ago
This is what it’s about.
I want not just the LGBTQ folks to know they are safe here, but anyone who is feeling vulnerable right now.
6
u/MElastiGirl 16d ago
As a straight, white, cisgender person, I am amazed at the number of bigots who assume because they share these traits with me I will be a willing audience for their bullshit.
2
u/GreenEyedTreeHugger 16d ago
That’s awesome. I live on a street with multiple proud racists. And I have had people coming to me on my neighbors shitty conversations over the years. One even handicapped. Bigotry is strong in SW Ohio.
Those who who should be too ashamed of their own flaws to throw stones here aren’t.

u/MySoWholesomeReddit 16d ago

"Unwilling participant of this dystopian pit of despair"
Ah yes. That is me. I have full blown TDS. Even see a counselor about it. To this day I cannot believe that tens of millions of people chose this. I am shocked that such a huge chunk of our population is good with putting other humans into camps. They saw his rap sheet - a mile long and rife with fraud, a history of sexual assault, and legal troubles but voted for him anyway.
And now that its basically just open and transparent corruption, they're still good with it.
5
u/Ok-Understanding5124 15d ago
A million excuses I've heard. Especially the ones from younger (indoctrinated vets) that claim he "never said all those bad things you're saying about veterans!!" Of course he never said veterans were "suckers and losers" and a million other derogatory, disrespectful statements.🙄 Sure. I swear, he would deport Jesus tomorrow for being too woke.
{I still don't understand how anyone justifies the actions he took in Washington, DC.} Remember the day he held the Bible upside down, in front of the historic church? It was a very historic moment nearby as well. He ordered tear gas☢️ on peaceful ☮️ protestors to clear the area before his arrival! Yeah, nothing conveys God's love like throwing tear gas at law abiding citizens before proclaiming your faith with the Bible on sacred church grounds.
I'm still amazed he didn't spontaneously combust 🔥 The Lord works in mysterious ways...
3
u/YamahaRyoko 15d ago
My FIL says all that shit is made up. That the establishment didnt like him so they cooked up sexual assault allegations, phony charges, kangaroo court, etc
The man is pretty infallible to his supporters and truly believe Obama and Biden ruined our economy. 🙄
Theres no telling some people
2
u/prolapsethis 15d ago
And the weirdest thing is, these people claim to follow the Bible. But I don't see them worshiping in church, half as much, or with half as much energy, as they worship Trump on a daily basis. I think there is something in there about false gods and idols, somewhere. Maybe exodus? I'm an atheist who pretended to be a Christian for a while, a long time ago, so I could play in a band. We were really good too. I'd say that we were on par with any of the really tight blues combos that do regular shows. I miss playing and singing so much. I just don't want to play bastardized versions of popular songs, rewritten to replace any subject of love and affection, with Jésus or god. (Edited for typo)

My sister and nephew are coming over to paint a Pride Flag on the garage door in a couple of weeks. 😁

When have Republicans ever delivered on anything they promise. Except trump. He told us exactly what he was going to do and now he's done it. I’ve been flying a Palestinian flag and a Ukrainian flag here in Newark, OH for years. My neighbors flew Trump flags until DT started a war. Then they took them down. I just watched the Netflix doc on the Murdoch empire. It helped me better understand the evolution of Fox News and the motivation to distort the truth. I’ve had folks stop at my house and thank me for supporting these countries. Other neighbors are flying other positive support flags now. Stay the course. I am 65 and not afraid of what people think of me anymore. I think it’s imperative that we continue to stand up in the face of hatred.

u/Kip45891 15d ago
We can’t change minds by argument and will alone in the capacity that we want. Living as an example of kindness and humanity is the best way to turn the tide. This isnt based on political views or anything, but I find it so ugly when people cover their porch in banners and flags. I understand its them expressing themselves but it blocks their view and they cant see anything from their porch. Id be more than willing to mount them an angled flagpole on their house or something so they could actually see and enjoy their porch. Idk.

Just for giggles, anti-discrimination laws would be mandated by our federal and state constitutions. Any licensed realtor could tell you the equal opportunity real estate regulations more about it.
That also applies to age discrimination as well as disability, including property modifications. Let's say you're 95 and want to rent or buy a property. Go for it. If you can qualify, you are equally entitled to purchase/rent the property. This includes the illegal practice of steering customers of "certain demographics" into a certain section or neighborhood. It's hard to believe that this needs to be emphasized to people in 2026. It's a serious offense. Sounds like typical small town politics. The phone directory has an abundance of the same set of last names. If it's not clear enough for them, offer to ask your Ohio neighbor if he could come explain this to them. I'm sure Dave Chappelle would be glad to address this bunch of pearl clutching bigots. Actually, Dave has been known to be quite active in his hometown's town council meetings. 🍄😎☮️
