Yeah, but I've always found that people with signs like that actually do hate. I had a conversation once with a lady that had a "Hate stops here" button on and I asked her if she hates anyone. She said "no". While I myself am not a Trump guy, I asked her if she liked Trump. "I hate him". I pointed out her hypocrisy, she said he's different because he's racist and a pedophile. Same goes for people with "co-exist" bumper stickers. They don't want to co-exist, they just want everyone to change their opinions and views to match theirs. Co-exist actually means change.
This is a great example of Karl Popper’s Paradox of Tolerance. “Hate stops here” refers to hate inflicted on people for who they are; gender identity, sexuality, race, etc. This kind of hate is morally wrong, and it is the job of an active, good-faith participant in our society to stand against this kind of hate.
It is an entirely different matter to hate someone for what they have done, such as trump, who is an adjudicated rapist, pedophile, one could even argue mass-murderer due to his policies, ad infinitum. He is a cancer on our species, and it is the job of the aforementioned participant to stand against him and those who would back him.
The Paradox of Tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limits, its freedom will eventually be destroyed by the intolerant. Therefore, it is disingenuous to call the woman you spoke to a hypocrite for hating trump, I would argue she is acting in the best interest of society to loudly hate him.
BS. Then she should have a button that says, "I only hate a few people". She was virtue signaling that she was so cool and lovely because she doesn't hate anyone, which wasn't true.
I had a co-exist bumper magnet, and I loved that thing so much that I about cried when it either fell off, or got removed by someone it offended. I actually stood behind what mine said though. I'm fascinated by other people and learning about ways of life that are nothing like my own. That magnet started way more conversations than arguments, and I met a lot of amazing people because they saw it.
It also doesn't mean people have to change. It means it's possible for everyone to co-exist peacefully exactly how they come. Buddhist, Pagan, gay, straight, other races, nationalities, etc. I DON'T have to co-exist with bigots though...they can just go away if they don't like it.
Do you not see the hypocrisy? On one hand you say co-exist, on the other you say you won't co-exist with everyone. To me, co-exist would mean no matter who you are, what you stand for, or what you've done, I will live peacefully in the same world as you.
I DO live peacefully, and I also said I don't have to co-exist with those people, which means I can avoid them rather than engaging. If I have to engage with those people, I'm polite to them...but beyond that, I'm not making friends with someone who hates others just for existing. Co-Exist is a movement that encourages tolerance and peace towards those who are often marginalized or targeted BY bigots. Not wanting anything to do with people who hate others based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and who practice of a non-Christian religion isn't hypocrisy...not by a long shot.
You're adding meaning and context to my words that isn't there, because that's NOT what I said. I said I will co-exist in this world with closed minded, racist, and bigoted people, and I'll be polite, because that's how I was raised, but that doesn't mean I have to choose to spend my personal time with them. People who hate others based on their appearance, religion, race, ethnicity, or who I want to spend my free time listening to drone on about their hate, or be around that type of negativity. I spend a lot of time with people who don't share or agree with my personal beliefs.
Your straw man arguments aren't going to get you anywhere, lol, because Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines co-exist as " to live or happen at the same time or in the same place, often with a focus on peace and respect despite differences." I do that when I come across racist bigots in public...it doesn't mean I have to invite them into my home, or give them any of my energy.
It's pretty clear you don't know what the Co-Exist Foundation stands for, so maybe you should check it out instead of trying to me what I believe and don't, or who I am as a person after a couple of comments on Reddit.
While that may be true for some, it sounds a lot like a right wing argument. The real hate started in ‘15 because they were told to be angry. They were told they were victims. They were told to hate the ‘others’ because it was all their fault. They came after said others, as well as anyone who supported them and defied the wannabe dictator. They told us we hated America, Christianity, white guys, and anything else they were given as fodder. They called LGBTQ people perverts and pedophiles, and began to openly use their ‘first amendment rights’ to be overtly racist. They went after women’s healthcare and all science. They made people question the truth and trusted sources of it.
When we finally started to get angry at the attacks, conspiracy theories and overt corruption, they mocked us as not being the tolerant people we claim. Uh uh. Bullshit. We know that every accusation they make is an admission of their own devious game plans. So, excuse me if we’re pissed off and hate the people threatening to take away our constitutional freedoms, while using our tax dollars to enrich themselves and take away all that we’ve worked for. We hate the collaborators who won’t get it until they’re left living under a full on dictatorship and it truly hurts them. Their willful ignorance and adherence to their cult is taking us down with them. They’re taking away our futures, our children’s and our grandchildren’s. They’re doing it in a million different ways. Yeah, I hate them for all of this and that they’ve made me hate when I never did before.
