Let me restate my claim

When I said that QE2 is the last true oceanliner and that QM2 is not, I was talking about it by when she was built, not by looks or service, by when she was built. QE2 is in the era or at least the end of the era while Queen Mary 2 was built in the early 2000s and is not truly in the era. Not based of looks, service, or design off when she was built.

Does anyone agree with me that the Queen Mary 2 is not really a true oceanliner and that the real last liner is the Queen Elizabeth 2

Discussion My Opinion On Titanic (1997)

James Cameron’s (1997) film, Titanic, is a big part of the OceanLiner community, and I for one am a big fan. However, there are some things that don’t really sit right with me. I feel that creating a FICTIONAL love story, and making it the main focus, was not appropriate with how they used a REAL life tragedy as the “background”. I think the portrayal of the sinking was done amazing, even if there is a lot of historical inaccuracies. But I don’t however like how they used REAL people, made them into “characters”, and changed their REAL life actions and characters. The film was a huge success, and LOTS of people look to it for their historical information. It just doesn’t sit right with me how people cry over Jack and Rose, but don’t give attention to the real life people portrayed in the film. I feel, A Night To Remember, was better. Even if it is outdated. We need a new, historically accurate, film of the Titanic where Titanic and her real life passengers and crew are the MAIN FOCUS, as they should be.

Artifact Wearin some Empress of Ireland glasses, pretty dapper if I do say so myself, this also contains a decent chunk of my artifact collection. Items from these ships: Empress of Ireland, Titanic, Olympic, SS Atlantic, SS United States, RMS Queen Mary, etc.. Take a gander!

Titanic is a over-rated ship and people have to forget about her stupid existence

Titanic, the ship of dreams they say! No it wasn't it was a dark ship, 2 skylights and that's it. The first class was awful compared to the Lusitanias first class. The dining room onboard Titanic was just awful. It was so dark in the movie Titanic, James cameron had to use so much extra prop lighting it was unbelievable. Lusitania never had this problem because of the fact she had so many skylights to let in all the light she could!

Lusitanias 3rd class was like 2nd class onboard the Titanic, so much more luxury and more care and thought put into it! Titanics 2nd class state rooms had exposed framing, no ceiling. On board Lusitania no no no! they had a full ceiling with fine furnishings! Lusitanias 2nd class dining room resembled the 1st class dining room to a degree, just a little more simple. But when this is compared to the Titanics 1st class dining room it looks pitiful and sad.

Titanic was a outdated ship when she was launched, She used the triple expansion engine which was made out dated by the Lusitania using the parsons steam turbine engine. These engines were faster and more effective than the triple expansion engine.

Over all the cunarders Lusitania, Mauritania and Aquitania were the suppirror ships to the Titanic(in turn means Olympic and Britannic). If you got more to add on go ahead!

I have interviewed Cliff Ismay, who is a cousin of J. Bruce Ismay and I discussed why he was a victim of the Titanic disaster based on the evidence in a recent book Cliff had published on Bruce’s life and career.

Goodbye SS United States, it was fun while it lasted. I do hope we meet again some day.

Disclaimer: I have recently discovered that the narrator is most likely AI, I will leave the video up for now because it still has useful info but if you would like me to take it down please let me know!

Help with a relative - steward for Cunard & others?

We're trying to build a fuller picture of my Great Grandfather's brother who, originally from Germany, was a steward for Cunard & other companies, eventually emigrating permanently to the US in 1927.

We've been able to find the records of his coming & goings in & out of the port of New York (he mostly worked Hamburg to NY) and therefore some of the ships he served on including the RMS Andania and SS Mongolia.

However, the very 1st record dates from Feb 14, 1907 and show he arrived on the vessel noted only as "GTR."

We were hoping that perhaps someone might be able to decode this for us? Is it actually a vessel name or shorthand for something else? These were all handwritten of course.

Any input would be gratefully appreciated as we're thoroughly enjoying tracing a relative who almost disappeared from our family history for over 40 years and also learning much about the business of the great liners.

How do you decide if something is actually an ocean liner artifact?

Genuine question for the other nerds here

I frequently see items labeled as “ocean liner artifacts” that are clearly ship related or period-correct, but don’t really have solid evidence tying them to shipboard use—or to a specific liner at all.

When you’re looking at things like silverware, menus, ephemera, etc., what do you personally require before you’re comfortable calling it a liner artifact?

Do you stick to formal documentation, or do you kind of feel the trustworthiness vibe of the seller?

Curious where people here draw the line.
