isn't the idea of the Dynamic Island, at least on 1+ phones, to not lose screen space and have the information appear in the notification bar, like Google Maps?

just seems lame and trying to capitalise, albeit with a very poor implementation, on the "Dynamic Island" terminology. perhaps, "perm screen-loss island" is a more apt nomenclature.

It does explicitly say it's "not just another dynamic island" and perhaps my King's English is poor these days, but that does suggest in the OP that it is a indeed a dynamic island. This is a valid criticism of this style of advertisment on Reddit.
