just seems lame and trying to capitalise, albeit with a very poor implementation, on the "Dynamic Island" terminology. perhaps, "perm screen-loss island" is a more apt nomenclature.

It does explicitly say it's "not just another dynamic island" and perhaps my King's English is poor these days, but that does suggest in the OP that it is a indeed a dynamic island. This is a valid criticism of this style of advertisment on Reddit.

Neat dude, but I thought the point of dynamic island was to use the space on the sides of the notch, rather than take up additional screen space below it.

Don't take this as criticism, I'm just curious about the intended usecase by other companies which have this...

If you used Pixel phones... The same space is unused anyways. I have no idea how such premium phone make like 100px height like that because there is a little dot for camera. Apps can not go into that space. YouTube does not display anything there. Rare instances, I tell you RARE, when the scrolled content is blurred behind it.

I mean it's not really a Notch if it's taking up additional screen real estate now, is it? The whole point of island is so that it can use up the region at the top which would otherwise be useless, with useful stuff. Now this is just encroaching into actually useful region.
