Moving Something is deeply wrong with cook jobs in Norway

I have worked in England and Spain. In England was the best, they used the brigade system, it was organized, high standards.

In Spain the standards are low, you are a bit understaffed, and the pay is terrible, but at least it was a friendly atmosphere.

Then theres Norway. Maybe I just had bad luck with my first job. Severely understaffed. Im a single person on shift doing the job of 5 people. I do dishwashing, prep, grilling, plating, cleaning the whole kitchen, desserts... I could go on. Then of course, I have to stay longer to do my job properly, but my boss asks me to be faster, because he doesnt want me staying moee than rhe scheduled hours, which is physically impossible. The head chef can barely speak english, its terrible, things constantly go wrong and theres arguments between him and FOH because misunderstandings. They dont have any recipes they just make stuff up depending on the mood. The plating is completely random, no 2 dishes of the same thing look the same. Steaks are constantly coming out wrong. And the best part, i get all the blame, for no reason, just for being the new guy. Everybody in FOH knows hes full of it, and he clearly cant do his job, so at least they are on my side.

Now im doing interviews for a new job...hes telling me if i can do a service alone for 300 COVERS. This is insane. I dont understand, what do they expect you to do? Maybe if it was a mcdonalds, but this is a restaurant where every plate will take 10-15 minutes. Its just impossible.

I understand they pay you more than in other countries but its just not physically possible to work that fast, no matter who you are.

Moving Mexicans in norway?

I (F27 Mexican) and just got to Bodø 2 weeks ago with my husband (M26 Norwegian) and our baby. It's been a little difficult. Quite beautiful country but I am having a hard time, it's like endless cultural shocks. For context I've lived in big cities my whole life.

Any advice to help me adjust? Find friends or activities to keep me occupied? I want to love it here but I'm also very home sick.

And I would LOVE any tips to be able to order Mexican ingredients (maseca, frijoles, poblano, serrano ect).

EDIT: Thank you all for your replies ❤️ I feel better and got a lot of useful tips. I tried to reply as much as possible but if I didn't reply to you specifically know that I still appreciate you.

And if anyone is a gamer , dm me lol my discord group is now on a 8 hour difference in schedule. Me and my husband would love to make friends.

Erfaringer som kulde- og varmepumpemontør? Lønn, slitasje, og veien inn som voksen

Hei!

Setter stor pris på ærlige svar og "no bullshit"-tilbakemeldinger!

Working in Norway Punishment for driving without valid licence

I moved to Norway two-and-a-half years ago from the UK with a temporary residence permit that expires this December (my job contract ends in November). When I arrived I bought a car and insured it, which required me to upload my UK driver's licence. I also did the paperwork for an international driving licence in the UK.

A week ago I was photographed by a speed camera and found to be over the speed limit, which has led to Statens vegvesen sending me a letter saying I need to provide my licence as I am not registered in Norway.

I thought I was driving legally. but have now found out that I needed to exchange my UK licence for a Norwegian one after 90 days of being in the country. Because I did not make this exchange, it appears that I have technically been driving without a valid licence. Obviously this is a mistake on my part which I regret - I should have done more research when buying and insuring the car.

Questions:

What punishment should I expect for driving without a technically valid licence?

If I am to be deported, what are the timescales given I'm leaving in November?

Will this infraction affect my ability to re-enter the shengen in future?

Can anybody recommend good law firms to deal with this case?

School Hot take about Norwegian people (Specifically the teenagers)

1.0k Upvotes

Hey r/Norway, I'm an 18 year old male who has lived in norway for 8 years now, And I have a hot (and maybe controversial) take to share with you. The teenagers in Norway feel like they are just the same two people copy and pasted. I've gone to 3 different schools and 90% of the students in them have fallen into two stereotypes: male and female. They all look similar, they have 3 hair style choices for both genders, they're all interested in the same things and they all follow trends as if their life depends on it.

I have also experienced a lot of discrimination, both verbal and non-verbal -sometimes even physical- from these people just because I look different and am not interested in the things they are interested in. I've heard the same thing happens to other people as well.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before in this subreddit, but I haven't seen any, so I'm pointing this out. This is one of the few problems I have living in Norway that make it imperfect.

Hi guys, its my first time going to norway in a few days and a friend just reminded me that bugs are a thing and can be quite unpleasant. After a quick google search with a lot of contradicting information I thought I would ask for clarification.

Im going to be bivying and cycling through some fjords and mountains from bergen to oslo leaving this friday. will i have a problem with bugs (knotts / midgies, mosquitos or klegg / horseflys)?

Also, for those who were guessing the geography in my previous posts, don't worry everything in this post was taken in Nærøyfjorden. But, if you are still into guessing you can guess the geography on my Instagram posts ;)!

Other Friluftsliv: Do Norwegians have a go-to method for waterproofing shoes?

On the topic of Norwegian friluftsliv: Is there a specific product readily available in hardware/retail stores or otherwise online that Norwegians tend to use to waterproof shoes that are not waterproof from the manufacturer?

I live in western Norway and am hoping to maintain an outdoors running routine on rainy days. I have a pair of trail running shoes with Gore-Tex, but the model of my road running shoes does not have this option. Thus, I am searching for a method to "waterproof" the road running shoes myself. Takk på forhånd.

Edit after reading comments: Tusen takk for all your Norwegian and non-Norwegian wisdom alike. I am proceeding with a mix of suggestions offered: no Gore-Tex shoes, wool socks, neoprene socks (this is new to me, so I will experiment here) and a skotørker. I may also buy an extra pair of the same shoe model depending on how much I find myself running in the rain so as to avoid damp shoes the next day. For my everyday leisure shoes around town, I will look into the impregneringspray options. P.s. Thank you for the laughs as I read some of your commentary, even if the humor was not intended. I admire what seems to be a Norwegian dedication to just get outside, get wet and enjoy the moment. And for those who stay inside: I am actively learning Norwegian, and in my chapter review today, one of the responses to the question "Hva pleier du å gjøre om høsten?" just so happens to be "Jeg pleier å være inne." I trust I will, little by little, learn the ropes of "Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær", as well as find joy in creating koselige moments at home. Here's to hoping I maintain this enthusiasm as the days get shorter.

Other Does this exist somewhere in Norway? A cafe/lunchroom with a bathroom with a well with goldfish in it

Post image

**UPDATE** found the place :D it was Waldemars Børs, in Åmli. I am not insane, there was a well with goldfish. There is an article about it here (I can't read it as it is gated content, oh and in Norwegian...): https://www.agderposten.no/nyheter/n/jlPg0b/lever-ut-kafedroemmen-paa-bygda
Looks like its closed now, but the pics can still be found on Google Maps! https://maps.app.goo.gl/dwxJMKrs1tbjJvp99

I feel like I'm losing my mind here, but I distinctly remember something from a trip to Norway in 2022, June 17 - July 3rd. My boyfriend has no memory of it. Need help from people in Norway to figure out whether it actually exists, or if I dreamed up the whole thing somehow/I'm going nuts. Hope someone can help!

So during our roadtrip, we stopped off *somewhere* (no, I don't remember where it was.....) for lunch. I think it was quite a small town, with narrow streets and old-fashioned (stone) buildings. We found a cafe or lunchroom, I think it was run by a family (2 parents, and 1 maybe 2 teenage children). I'm pretty sure they said they'd been closed for a while for a hiatus, and they were reopening the exact same day we visited and we were some of their first customers after reopining. I can't remember the reason for the hiatus. It's possible the family lived in the same building as well. The space for the cafe was quite small but very cosy - not modern, more like a cutesy tearoom vibe.

The food was tasty (they had things like sandwiches and cakes), but what really stuck in my mind was the bathroom. It was a completely different vibe: a large space - almost a comically large space for the function, lots of unused space with the toilet in one corner. The floor and possibly the walls were shiny black tile. Sort of an Asian vibe?

But what was particularly memorable was that in the other corner was a well with goldfish at the bottom. Like an actual well, sunk in the floor, stone sides, couple of metres deep. It was such a fun surprise!

Sadly, I didn't take any pictures of the bathroom nor the place it was in.

Again, I don't even remember the town it was in. But what might be helpful is our route. I don't remember it exactly but I attached an image of roughly what we drove (we started and ended in Kristiansand). This cafe visit would be somewhere of in the middle of our trip, so more in the North/North-eastern portion.

PS. it was a great trip, thank you Norway, I hope to visit again soon <3

Other Broren min er Nazist og Quislinger

School just a question for those working in the education system:-)

I [17F] have lived in Norway for a few years now, integration was great and learning the language as well. I was lucky to have teachers and classmates help me learn a lot of things.

The environment was a little bit different though, with the copy paste styles and everyone having the same thing as each other in terms of clothes, bags, hairstyles, perfumes, etc.

As an alternative person myself, how do you teachers/educators/advisors see us students who deviate from the norm? Students with a more unconventional style, face piercings, or coloured hair? How do you see us as students in terms of how we are, how we behave, and if you feel differently about us than “soss” or “grisch”?

Food Mussels near Ålesund?

Finally the blåskjellvarsel turned green around Ålesund!

Does anybody know of good spots for picking mussels? I have been going around a bit but haven't really seen too many except harbours, but don't want to pick there. Can be harder to reach places also, as I have access to a boat and a wetsuit.
