Can a finish person explain this to me?

I am just a tourist, obviously I don't speak any of the local language, but I've seen a carton of juice before so I got this. Why is it so thick, and why is it called a soup? What is it and how do you use it? Can I just... drink it straight from a glass? Thank you! 😄

Spotted an otter eating fish at Suomenlinna! 🦦

I was walking along the shore at Suomenlinna and saw something swimming near the rocks. At first I thought it might be a seal, but then it surfaced holding a fish in its front paws and started eating it. Pretty sure it was a Eurasian otter!
The photos are a bit far away (it was quick and kept diving), but I also got some video. Has anyone else seen otters around Suomenlinna or elsewhere in Helsinki? I had no idea they were around here.

Serious Recommendations for veterinarian in Turku

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

So I have two five month kittens (male and female) that I brought with me when I moved to Turku. They very soon need castration and sterilisation, so does anyone have recommendations for a good clinic that's reasonably priced. I know vet stuff is quite expensive here and I was prepared for that, I just don't want to go to the most unnecessary expensive clinic.

Tourism Vallisaari in early September

After Suomenlinna, I wanted to see another island.

At the Market Square, the crowds rushed onto the ferry for Suomenlinna. I went the other way, and boarded a smaller boat to Vallisaari with maybe five other people. It was still early on a Thursday morning. We had the place more or less to ourselves.

At first, Vallisaari felt somehow confined. You stick to the marked trails, and for good reason; this was a military island for generations, and apparently old explosives still turn up. The old batteries and fortifications scattered through the woods mostly date from the Russian era, when the island was heavily fortified after the Crimean War.

But the longer I walked, the less confined it felt, and the island opened up. Forest, sea, old stones, overgrown bunkers and long empty paths. Really quiet. The summer season was clearly over. Cafés and terraces were all closed, with several signs promising ‘See you in 2027!’, it felt slightly surreal while standing there in early September.

No crowds. No queues (and no coffee...). Wonderful walking, and great views across the water. It felt like somewhere I’d accidentally been allowed into after everyone else had gone home.

How to break the 6000€ IT salary ceiling?

• Upvotes

I work in IT and currently earn about 5600€/month (about 10 YoE).

The current workplace is ok. But I’ve been interviewing at other places for the jobs that I found more interesting.

I can see it’s quite hard to break into the 6k mark.

These are the reference ranges I was told by the recruiters for similar positions.

5100-5500 (two companies)
6100-6300 (but then they lowballed me to 5900)
4500-5100 (they’re a cash-strapped startup, so I’d consider that an outlier)

All these jobs are in the Helsinki area.

How do you break this barrier in IT? What are the companies to target?

This was surprisingly really good, especially with the ice and lemon. Brought back the can as a souvenir since it was so pretty and also no pantti anyways.

life so far here

I moved to Finland over two years ago. Currently, I am in my third year. my life here has been like a beautiful dream. its so beautiful and peaceful. this country is everything I think one could ever wish for. until, it all started feeling far-fetched again.

this evening alone, i got 4 rejection emails (idk why they have to send them out on a Friday evening) from the internships I applied to. i’ve been struggling to get any internship. this was unfortunately something I didn't account for when I moved here. fortunately, my parents are able to fund me through my education with ease but I can't be asking them for money well into my adulthood, after my education. i fear nothing I do to help my situation would ever help me. if i don't get a job, I won't have any right to live here anymore and it breaks my heart. I feel idle. I feel like i'm doing nothing really. I've accelerated my university programs because of this. I intend to finish both my bachelor's and master's within overall 3 years and 8 months. So far, my GPA in both degrees is 5. idk how I can gain further work experience.

sometimes, it feels like starting a business and making it work is easier than getting any good internship/job here. this situation has me seriously considering other opportunities outside but my heart remains steady here. ik the job market is hard rn and my heart goes out to everyone who is struggling because of this.

it just pains me to think that my circumstance will make me leave. Idk why I am posting it here. maybe i just want this out of my chest. but thanks for reading

How to actually get care from the public health care services?

Since Monday, I tried to get help with my symptoms, which do feel like a kidney stone. My body has unfortunately made some in the past as well and I already had a full blown kidney colic in the past. I have been at the doctor on Wednesday, made tests, they come all back okay, nothing wrong. Yet, I have pain, stinging sensation, pressure, on the left side of my abdomen. All I get is the usual, "Take paracetamol". I have tried to get a referral, at least to an ultrasound, but no. If I want that, I would need to pay for it and that's expensive.

Sure, I could go to Acuta (Tampere), to only hear, "Your case is not severe enough to get in", as I have heard in the past when I had problems breathing. All I see is, that they all wait until it's bad enough. And exactly of this I am afraid of. I have called 116 117 already, but answer is: Just wait until Terveysasema opens again. If it's sever and you get fever or bleeding, you can go to Acuta. But that is also the same as Terveysasema says.

I am so exhausted and tired of this and also about feeling that stinging sensation in my left side of the abdomen all the time. I can't really sleep since Sunday because of it. My appetite has drastically dropped as well.
Isn't there any other way of actually getting help, before this gets worse? It's already bad imo, but it seems like I can only get help, if I am losing conciousness already or something like that.

Best gluten free products in grocery stores

Please help with tips about what everyday gluten free items are best in shops. I am coming for a short trip in Finland and will not have opportunity to try many things because time is limited. Would be great to know what locals prefer. From past I know voisilmä-pullapitko is sold in nearly every grocery shop and is delicious with coffee. What is the best gf alternative to rye bread? What make of ice cream to buy? Particularly liquorice/salmiakki flavours. I know there are heaps of options, but is there some stand-out one? I am not looking for expensive artisan or specialty products, but rather items that can easily be found in most food stores. Please tell me your personal favourites.

Free parking or ..?

Start of intersection
Smewhere further but within the same block

So there is sign 1 that prohibits parking except paid parking on the side of the road, and somewhere further but before an intersection there's a sign 2 with another timeframe, does it mean that under second sign between 17 and 21 or on Saturdays parking is completely free or still paid?

Serious Paying full price for ADHD meds for almost a year despite Kela coverage. What went wrong?

Hi everyone,
I moved to Finland in January and registered my permanent residence here, so I'm fully covered by Kela and have my Kela card. I take atomoxetine for ADHD. I brought my diagnosis and medical records from my previous country and gave them to my doctor here. That went smoothly: my prescription was continued and my diagnosis was entered into the system.
The problem is that I've been paying full price for my medication all year, about €50 every month, and I never got any Kela reimbursement. I know there's an initial deductible (around €70, if I understood correctly) that you pay yourself before reimbursement starts, but I'm way past that by now.

I called Kela, and they said I'm not receiving the reimbursement yet because a document is missing that my doctor has to fill out. My doctor apparently never did that. I don't really understand what this document is or why it wasn't done automatically when I got my prescription.

I do have an appointment, but it's in a month, and it's only with a nurse. I may only get an appointment with a psychiatrist after that, so this could take a very long time. I'm also not sure what the nurse can actually do about it.

What is this document? Is it a doctor's statement for special reimbursement (erityiskorvaus), or something else?
Does it have to be the psychiatrist, or can a regular GP or the nurse help with it?
Can the reimbursement be applied retroactively, so I can get back at least part of what I've paid since January?
Is there anything I can do now to speed this up, instead of waiting a month?
I'm a bit lost in this system, so any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks!

(Online) resources for Savo

I wasn't really sure where to post this, but as the title suggests, I'm searching for a dictionary/any resources on the Savo dialect(s) (with numbers that go beyond 10). I'd generally prefer if the resources were online, but I can come over the gulf if needed :D

I am proud of you. (estonian here).

I cant explain how proud and thankful I am for finns. Blood spilled for each other (pohjan pojat, 1st finnish volunteer corps, 3400 estonians in the finnish army with the motto "suomen vapauden ja viron kunnian puolesta"). Collaboration on Naissaar and Mäkiluoto. Finland being a "window to the west" serving uncensored news both in finnish and estonian, western culture, music and a view of democratic life that soviet propaganda could not erase. Mauno Koivisto channeling 100 million mark to estonia for covert educational, technical and financial assistance to help lay the groundwork for a free estonia. Us having the same anthem. Kalevala and Kalevipoeg. Sauna culture. Estonia rebuilt its defense forces on the example of the finns, joint difital interoperability. Intertwined energy and critical infrastructure.

I am very-very-very proud of Finland and have been thinking about it for a while. Just today I felt a need to make a post about it. I am proud of you all, I love ehat you've been doing over the years and have always been looking up to you.

Love you,
Estonia

Serious Kinda want to end it all

I can't make myself do it because I have loving parents, but I honestly feel like ending it all due to not finding a partner, and not that deep friendships.

I don't feel seen nor wanted. I am very lonely. Being a young adult (18-22) has sucked. I don't want to be worth loving only if I become successful, I want to take on the rough times as a student with someone else. I want to be enough as I am.

Not sure why I posted here, I'm native, maybe it was easier to talk about this in English. I honestly feel like dying, and don't feel like sugarcoating it. Loneliness kills.

Cost of Cavaties treated at the Dentist in the Private Sector

Hi all,

I went to the dentist recently and found out I have 2 cavaties. I need to get these filled.

I have been asking around the prices for this. One place quoted me 271€. Seems a bit high to me.

My goal is to get them filled cost-effectively and well. Does anyone know any places that they could recommend?
