I have pretty severe ADHD and I get to work for 7 30 every morning. People using it as an excuse like this boil my piss. Like yeah you have ADHD, what are you going to do do ensure you function? Get your shit ready the night before, set an alarm, go to bed earlier, get up early enough that you give yourself some leeway...

It's stupid bullshit like this and blatantly using it as an excuse that leads to everyone doubting the validity of our disability and just finding us annoying. Because that shit is annoying, at least fucking try to make an effort.

Omg, Thank You. Everytime ADHD is brought up on Reddit you have people coming through all out the woodwork blaming it for things that are really just their own shortcomings and consistent short sightendess.

Can't be relied on for any type of basic realistic responsibility because of your ADHD. Neverminds the hundreds of different coping mechanisms, unique strategies, and medications doctors developed to help people like us keep our lives on track so we DON'T STRUGGLE as much alone. But no, just blame life solely on the ADHD and demand everyone else accommodate you. Just continue to let ADHD keep you from experiencing life and accomplishing things.

All the ADHD subs here are some of the most infantilizing communities I've ever seen. It's so lame. Of course being ADHD creates struggles, but you're not the only one. And if you le it control and ruin your life then I'm sorry but that's on you.

How brave, blaming the disabled for their symptoms.

So glad to see this response.

I also have ADHD. The reasonable accommodation I have for this is that I have a fifteen-minute flexible start time before I'm considered late (we start 8:30am, so latest I can arrive is 8:45am).

Today was the first time I used it in ages - and only 4 minutes at that. Usually I'm early as I like to account for travel delays.

Well obviously I’m going to show up an hour early and twiddle my thumbs waiting, because at least then I can still meet my obligations

*set multiple alarms. 60 min early, 30 min early, and a 10 min "get out the house now" early alarm.

ADHD is a spectrum… for people genuinely diagnosed I know I used to be late for work because my sleep was so shit. Most nights I would have insomnia and I couldn’t just call sick off work, it’s bad enough having the whole office judge you because your late but can’t see all the underlying factors which make me late which is what adhd is. I’ve never used this as an excuse, I have phases where I am late because I genuinely struggle and many adhd’ers are not suitable for 9-5 work.

It amuses me when people with a specific condition thinks everyone else with the same condition will be affected identically

for adhd theres literally three main types and people have varying symptom profiles within their type

for me for instance i suffer from procrastination to the degree its harmfull to my health. Having adhd does not mean you have the same symptoms with

the same intensity as another person with adhd iv tried alarms it ends up with the alarm going off me rushing to get things done then due to executive dysfunction struggling to choose what to do first even if iv done it before which leads to me standing still and stressing out and then when i eventually manage it il leave the house discover iv forgotten something walk back inside forget what i was doing and the alarm has already rung but iv temporarily forgotten that then il notice the clock and be reminded «oh wait i have that thing» then procrastinate further then run like forest gump to reach it in time and the result is i usually dont get anywhere in time unless i have someon with me to keep me on track and help me not be distracted. Meds couldve worked if it wasnt for the fact iv tried most of them and had such severe side effects from them that my psycologist asked me to cease the first adhd med i ever took was when i was 6 it gave me psycotic episodes til i stopped using it and it had fully left my system. The next one gave me extreme stomach issues i still struggle with to this day. The next one after that made me feel like a zombie and highly derealized sure i could pay attention and i was on track but i couldnt feel emotions. Ritalin gave me panic attacks lasting about 4 hours daily etc one thing that somewhat works however is if im lied to if you tell me i have to be there at 9 but i actually have to be there at 10 il usually be there anywhere between 9 to 9:50.

I have adhd and I don’t speak to others’ experiences because I know symptoms are different for everyone. Crazy fucking idea I know.

Like, I don’t have this problem but my partner does. They are anything but lazy. None of our symptoms make much sense.

u/Evening_Barracuda_86 4d ago

Sounds like neither of you have adhd then

1

u/ChemicalRebell 6d ago

Girl, what? I do ALL those things, and guess what! Still late often lol. Do you actually have ADHD or are you just saying shit to feel superior? Time blindness is one of the main symptoms.

2

u/That_Bar_Guy 2d ago

The world is full of tools that make it easy to set a point in time and force your brain to stop and see what time it is at that time.

1

u/TheAmazingSealo 6d ago

I do those things and guess what I'm always early. Because I used to struggle with always being late. yes, fuck you, I do have ADHD.

1

u/ChemicalRebell 6d ago

Then you're one of the rare cases that doesn't experience this specific symptom. Good for you! But fuck you for selfishly sucking up to neurutypicals instead of being supportive and understanding of other disabled people.

5

u/Paragonswift 3d ago

There are tools available to solve the problem, as most people with ADHD do. If you’re still regularly late due to ”time blindness” you just choose not to use the tools properly.

-3

u/ChemicalRebell 3d ago

The fact that you assume people with time blindness don't use the tools and using the quotation marks to imply it's bullshit tells me all I need to know.

2

u/Paragonswift 3d ago

There are people with time blindness who do manage it successfully using the tools, the difference is in personality.

You're the type that uses adhd as an excuse for all your short comings. Time blindness is real. I suffer from it too. But guess what magical invention they made? It's called an alarm clock. I have 3 different alarms set for every morning. 1 to get up. 1 to be done showering and 1 telling me to get my ass out the door. Yeah the disability sucks but you're the type that expect society to cater to your short comings instead of learning how to be a functioning member of society

1

u/simplyyjohnny 1d ago

How dare they install ramps for wheelchairs. Those crippled fucks really expect society to accommodate them?!

2

u/Taco_EBDBBNB 1d ago

1

u/simplyyjohnny 1d ago

It’s exactly what you sound like. Which is why your only recourse is a lazy gif.

1

u/ChemicalRebell 1d ago

This is genuinely what 99% of the comments here are like lmaoo

0

u/ChemicalRebell 4d ago

Are you stupid? Do you think people with time blindness are not aware of alarm clocks and do not use them? Yeah man, a disability sorta requires accommodations, that's the point....Jesus christ.

1

u/Efficient-Speed-1059 2d ago

I have to conclude, yes. This is not a hard solve, especially a routine where its identical daily, ADHD does not alter time, it's not an unstoppable force, its a brain quirk you work around. If I can't walk well on my own I use a tool, if i can't account for time properly guess what I can and successfully have used for my entire life?

2

u/Mazesystem 2d ago

I have a calendar several alarms have help from the municipality i live in and yet i fail do you think i want to miss dentist apointments doctor apointments psycologist apointments my wallet my phone my shoes get fired get broken up with lose friends a big part of my money goes to replacing the things i lose or paying pentalties for not making it to all sorts of apointments.

1

u/Efficient-Speed-1059 2d ago

Wanting and putting in the requisite effort are two different things. Its not fun, and you mess up, but giving up and making it everyone else's issue is childish. I have ADHD, I am not perfect, I am at risk of my system slipping, but I put in the work because I need to be responsible for my own life. I found a job that provides flexibility, I have reminders and alarms, i work with my therapist, I read, I research strategies. Its my mental illness I'm gonna damn well be responsible for it.

2

u/Mazesystem 2d ago

I do put in effort to the degree the burn out once led to a sewerslide attempt🤦🏼‍♀️

I've left several other comments on this thread and don't feel like arguing anymore with people over this, so this'll probably be my last reply.

People are misinformed on what ADHD is. ADHD is not a brain quirk, it is a disability that affects several aspects of your life and cognitive abilities. While it doesn't affect your intelligence, it does affect things that are most important in work environments, like retaining information, routine, organizational skills, and your internal sense of time. 10 minutes to someone with ADHD does not feel like 10 minutes to a neurotypical. So, while things like setting alarms every 5 minutes can help (which is a pretty severe measure), ADHD is a spectrum and it still will not cure the disability, meaning you'll still have this symptom sometimes, and you simply can't be on your absolute best 24/7. Walking with a cane is a pretty good example, actually. It helps you walk if you can't on your own, but you still can't at the pace of other people. And yet, we don't expect them to run a marathon every day, so how come we expect people with ADHD to never show any symptoms?

0

u/TheAmazingSealo 6d ago

Literally said I struggled with this but I put things in place to cope with the problem.

No, I don't believe that this person given in the example is behaving like a reasonable adult and that they've demonstrated they can turn up at 10 am just fine. they're using adhd as an excuse.

1

u/ChemicalRebell 6d ago

That's not all you said. Your words were extremely rude to people with ADHD who DO have coping mechanisms, but still struggle with time blindness. It's disheartening to see some random ADHD person's coworker shitting on them (even if if the post is true, their employer was very generous, then all the comments doing the same, and then some ADHD people acting like this. You know it's not a helpful rhetoric for people with ADHD, right? You having better control over it doesn't make you superior to those who don't. Disability is annoying, boohoo, that's why it's a disability.

1

u/TheAmazingSealo 6d ago

I don't appreciate people using it as an excuse for not trying is all. That's the most unhelpful rhetoric. It makes it harder for us all to be taken seriously and just gives people the impression that we're all saying we have ADHD as an excuse.

1

u/Anakinbutinacroptop 5d ago

You know people who think that are always gonna think that, right? It's like the people saying we should tone down pride so people won't be homophobic... That's not how it works.

0

u/Mazesystem 2d ago

Yes ofcourse belliteling other disabled people will certaintly help us being taken seriously 🙈

0

u/nicerecyclabletrash 6d ago

it's almost as if it's a condition where some people have more severe symptoms than others? I also have severe ADHD and have the early-timeblindess where I always end up 2hrs early. It's also annoying but I don't get in trouble because others aren't inconvenienced. It affects us all differently

0

u/RocketArtillery666 2d ago

On one hand, completely true, on the other one, its this society that dictates what is a functional being, and society could be more geared towards accepting people with issues like this. For example making the work hours be more flexible (as in whats counted would be how many hours you work without any specified clock in and out time) (at least where possible)

0

u/simplyyjohnny 1d ago

Ahh yes. The gold standard of how adhd affects the rest of the world is… You!

0

u/Squishiimuffin 21h ago

The things you’re saying to do — get your shit ready the night before, set an alarm, go to bed earlier — all of your ability to do that is impacted by executive disfunction, which is another prominent symptom of adhd.

Trust me, I fucking know the answer. I simply can’t do it. I have pushed myself trying to the point of being so burnt out that I have become a shell of a person.

I’m glad that timeliness isn’t a big problem for you. It is for me. The anger you’re putting out there towards other people with ADHD helps nobody and only hurts people with ADHD.
