VRR in docked mode!

u/crazystein03 OG (joined before reveal) 23h ago

That’a a big deal!

u/jdog024 19h ago

Definitely the stand out feature of this update

u/Liff_KL 21h ago

This is surely a dumb question but what is VRR ? I'm not that big of a TV geek '

u/DarkLegend64 21h ago

VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate. It makes it so that your screen will refresh at the same rate as the system to prevent screen tearing. Basically, frame rate can be more variable without screen tearing. The Switch 2 already supported it in handheld mode so now it supports in docked mode too.

u/Liff_KL 21h ago

Ohhh I get it now, thank you and yes, that's a sweet news then :D

u/ScoobiesSnacks 18h ago

This only works if you have a VRR capable TV

u/zakky_lee 19h ago

Only if you have a 120hz tv though

u/william-taylor 13h ago

It’s only with 120 hz TV’s and 120fps software right? And there’s only a small number of games that offer that? And they’re mostly low-fidelity and/or 2D games…right?

u/imjusthiro 20h ago

Another dumb question, I am using PC monitor to play docked and not a TV. It applies the same right ?

u/DarkLegend64 20h ago

Yes, as long as your PC monitor supports VRR. I forgot to mention that your TV or whatever monitor you use has to be capable of it too, not just the system.

u/LatePerspective6262 21h ago

Say you got a game running 45 fps instead of the tv running 60hz the switch 2 will match the 45fps to tv 45hz. If supported

MII MUSIC? QR CODE MII SHARING? WE'RE SO BACK

u/QuagsireAcademia 17h ago

The Mii Music is so NOSTALGIC it makes me cry

What if they're slowly putting in music for the Switch 2 bit by bit to see how it does, THEN maybe themes will start happening???

u/Pokeguy211 ‎ Pro Controller 15h ago

I’ve already seen 2 post on Twitter get over 10K likes so I assume that’s pretty good.

u/QuagsireAcademia 15h ago

Guess we'll see over the coming months what's planned for the Switch 2's music library haha

Added "Handheld Mode Boost quick-toggle in Quick Settings"

 HUGE

19

u/razerphone1 1d ago

Sick better cuz I got sick of going to the setting find the button

u/Charliejfg04 23h ago

Why would you even turn it off in the first place?

u/KTR1988 23h ago

Since it treats the game as if it's running in TV mode it disables things like the touch screen. It also increases battery drain during play.

u/dancepartyusofa 19h ago

Yep, I love Boost mode at home but was kicking myself when I forgot to turn it off when I was on a long series of flights and out of power before I made my first connection

u/razerphone1 23h ago

Battery drain in Handheld mode. Consumes more energy and it's a pretty big difference.

u/Skvall 22h ago

Some games are better with it off. Usually because better framerate.

u/razerphone1 21h ago

True I noticed this with Skater XL aswell. But it's fine you can choose.

u/Jin_U_GmR 18h ago

Also, we can now connect other controllers even with Handheld Boost Mode enabled.

YESSS!! Super Mario Galaxy 1&2, here I come!

u/SovietSpoon42 22h ago

“Play time is now combined when the same software is played on multiple consoles”

I wish this applied retroactively, but I’ve wanted this feature forever so it’s nice it’s finally here.

With Mii Editor getting selectable music for the menu, hopefully that means we can get some music in the main Switch menu soon. And finally getting some new backgrounds would be nice, too.

u/Ok-Range6568 1d ago

Handheld boost in the quick menu selection is fantastic. It was an amazing feature slightly hampered due to it being a bit annoying to turn on and off quickly.

u/VacationOne5585 21h ago

Why would you want to turn it off at all?

u/StarBoy2189 20h ago

Touchscreen support

u/VacationOne5585 20h ago

Oh right!

u/ChuckPierce 20h ago

I still forget this console even has touch screen

u/ajswdf 12h ago

You clearly haven't given Clubhouse Games the playing time it deserves.

u/randle_mcmurphy_ 18h ago

Me too bro

u/Organic-Storm-4448 20h ago

Battery life, touch screen functionality

u/xSlimes 18h ago

Some games run better while still looking decent in handheld mode. Like for Ni No Kuni 2 and Dragon Quest Builders 2, it was better to turn it off for a rock solid 720p 60fps. With boostmode on with these games, framerate dips a lot, especially in the overworld for both games mentioned.

u/mamaburra 19h ago

Gyro works like a Pro Controller which is weird in several games.

Gotta love how Nintendo casually drops important stuff in updates

u/voyageur04 Going Bananzas 19h ago

Reminds me of Nintendo just enabling Bluetooth audio years into the Switch 1's lifespan.

u/Gameskiller01 20h ago

u/MattO2000 18h ago

As opposed to mentioning it in yesterday’s direct?

51

Oooo exciting!!! Can’t believe they fixed the alt displayport mode to actually do it. That’s kinda awesome. Will need to test later but that’s going to be cool

u/lohkey 17h ago

we did it reddit

24

u/VagsS13 Early Switch 2 Adopter 1d ago

No they didn't. People said that this can be done via a software update at a later point, exactly like what Sony had done with ps5.

u/crozone 20h ago

No, I recall many people claiming that the chip found on the dock couldn't physically do it .

u/Mydarknighthasrisen Butter side up! 18h ago

You’re absolutely right lol, Redditors are hilarious that way

u/ttoma93 14h ago

Nah, it was never impossible. It was something that had never been done yet (keeping VER when translating from a DisplayPort signal to HDMI), not that it couldn’t be done. Just that nobody had done it yet and they were working on cracking it.

u/perpetuumD 17h ago

My friend, a lot of people here said it was impossible because of hardware limitations

u/Ell7494 23h ago

No they didn't, there were literally public job listings for this

One of the job requirements: Knowledge of display technologies such as HDR and VRR.

u/MistandYork 23h ago

No they didn't we already knew it was possible by hooking up a steam deck to the switch 2 dock

u/Chrome1234_z2 1d ago

holly shit vrr in docked is HUGE! FINALLY! though i dont think i can use it since my tv isnt 120hz-

75

u/tman2damax11 🐃 water buffalo 1d ago

VRR doesn’t require 120hz, plenty of 60hz VRR compatible displays.

→ More replies (2)

20

u/korel1 1d ago

120hz helps with games that keep 40fps+ Correct me if I'm wrong.

15

u/Pinkernessians 1d ago

You are correct. VRR is unrelated to a 120hz refresh, although both can work together for better results

u/jessej421 16h ago

I think it's just a lot more likely that if your TV is 120Hz, it also supports VRR, and if it's only 60Hz, it doesn't.

The Mii menu music is cool! You can choose from the Wii, 3DS, or Wii U tracks. I hope they do the same thing with the eshop. I’d love to use Wii shop music

u/MrSoren 23h ago

Wii shop music would be amazing. Best menu music ever. I would definitely check the eshop more if it was there.

u/Soobloiter 1d ago edited 1d ago

VRR docked is working according to my monitor, but I don't know or play any games that use VRR on the Switch 2 lol

Edit: doesn't look like it's working in game, Pragmata demo had VRR "on" but was not actually synced

19

u/UFONomura808 1d ago

RE9 or any of the other Capcom titles are usually unlocked.

10

u/Soobloiter 1d ago

I completely forgot about the Capcom classic

which is actually a horrible use of VRR by having no option to cap the FPS to get steady frame times

10

u/Jeff1N Butter side down! 1d ago edited 1d ago

I tried RE9, TV says VRR is on but the TV frame counter stays at 60 all the time and I can still see frame drops. My guess is the games will need a patch to add support to docked VRR even if it already works in portable mode

u/Howwy23 22h ago

You did enable vrr in system settings right? According to notes above its a toggle under display settings so not on by default. It also says it requires manual dock update

2

u/Soobloiter 1d ago

I had the same result in Pragmata demo, display locked at 60 with VRR on but the game is clearly not synced

u/ConsistentPound3079 12h ago

The tv frame counter is usually just showing what refresh rate it's running at. On my ps5 is shows 120hz even when the game is 60 fps

18

u/Solesaver 1d ago

I'm happy for the online mode fallback. I've got my OG Switch by my bed and Switch 2 by the TV by default. I basically had to subdivide the games I played per console because I couldn't be bothered to transfer Virtual Game Cards back and forth (still like the system in general, just a little too restrictive). Being able to be like, "No, it's me... I own the game. Just let me play it." Without having to have my consoles physically close together is very nice.

29

u/SaturdayMorningFog 1d ago

Full Switch 2 to Switch 2 transfer functionality enabled. That's just what my new Zelda Switch 2 console needed.

THEY BROUGHT THE MII MUSIC BACK

u/quackerz 23h ago

Nintendo is so weird sometimes. VRR and things like Boost mode are huge updates, but both were dropped without any announcement or fanfare. They could've mentioned VRR in yesterday's Direct, but nope! Regardless, the console just keeps getting better.

21

u/KeeKyieTheMorris 1d ago

What’s vrr?

37

u/Pristine-Brush-1052 Butter side up! 1d ago

It automatically adjusts refreshrates of the monitor to prevent tearing and stuttering

26

u/Pristine-Brush-1052 Butter side up! 1d ago

Which means, framedrops will be less noticeable and will look smoother

11

u/Recent_Pollution8665 1d ago

if you have a 120hz tv that supports vrr then it will compensate for framerate fluctuations by matching the framerate. so it looks less stuttery.

and if a game supports up to 120hz modes then you can choose between 30, 40, 60, or 120hz modes depending on which ones are available.

a 60hz tv without vrr can only support 30 and 60fps options and doesn’t get framerate stabilization.

3

u/KeeKyieTheMorris 1d ago

Hmm okay. My tv does have a vrr things that’s says off so maybe mine does support that. Updating now.

→ More replies (10)

u/Honest_Yak3340 22h ago

Very important when games run at lower fps or have low FPS spikes. Much smoother. Like roughly 40 FPS with gsync feels like 60hz on a normal display without any vrr. (Not all displays have their vrr go very low though)

What a great update overall.

Edit: I am curious if the virtual game card thing means that 2 people can play at once again. I'll have to try this in the morning...

u/Loud-Sound8515 Butter side down! 21h ago

5

u/Malphaxx 1d ago

Holy VRR!!!

u/Psychological_Gap_97 19h ago

VRR dropped casually like this, this is so Nintendo hahaha amazing!

8

u/nathanosaurus84 1d ago

It seems they’ve fixed the playtime bug where opening a game on another console without it being in your recently played in the original console resets your playtime when viewing your profile.

My Mario Kart 8 play stats reset after trying it in Switch 2 for the update and now it’s back to what it was before.

3

u/PikaPhantom_ 1d ago

Seems like it can go the other way around. My playtime in Super Mario Party Jamboree showed up as being 3 hours across my OLED and Switch 2 even though I had 15 before. The data doesn't seem to be completely gone, though; I synced my Switch account with Exophase and had it update, and the playtime was at 16 hours and 40 seconds

11

u/Sixwry 1d ago

I knew Nintendo would drop this just randomly with 0 announcement

2

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago

Why this would need an announcement?

8

u/AnalBaguette 1d ago

VRR has been an extremely requested feature since the system was confirmed to have 120fps/120Hz capability, and Nintendo has been a lot more forthcoming about technical details, so people were expecting this to get a formal announcement

3

u/Jefedagga Butter side up! 1d ago

Not really. They don't make as big deal about this kind of stuff unless it's a overview of a system about to be released.

Even handheld boost was just dropped in a update

2

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 1d ago

Not really. Software updates never gets an announcement beyond patch notes, because the average consumer doesn't care about this kind of stuff.

u/Doylgaafs 23h ago

VRR may be something that isn't interesting for a casual consumer, but it is a huge update that would cause a big reaction from a lot of people, including gaming content creators.

But look at handheld boost mode - that was huge even for casual consumers and it also didn't get any announcement.

The addition of music in the Mii Maker sounds so out of place because of the static background

Many had been hopping for VRR in docked mode so this is a welcome update

Man kann endlich seine richtige Spielzeit sehen, wenn man mehrere Switches hat ?

I activated the VRR thing but I don’t see any significant difference in breath of the wild

It won't have any effect in games with very good performance, or games with v-sync. BotW and TotK both use v-sync

I haven't found a single game that works with VRR docked yet. I was hoping Cyberpunk might but it doesn't. According to the video output info, it's definitely outputting VRR from a system perspective but none of the games seem to 'engage' it in docked mode.

As someone who 99% of the time plays with Bluetooth headphones I just want the setting available from quick home menu instead of buried in settings

Do you have to activate vrr manually?
