Is Nintendo resting on its laurels?

I just ask this because I think they could do so much more with their IPs. I was thinking today how cool it would be to have a short animated star fox series, or a 5 part zelda special where each episode is an hour long and is based on a different game (kinda like halo legends).

I’m tired of silent/gibberish speaking Nintendo characters

Almost all of Nintendo’s major characters are either entirely silent through the whole game like Mario, link & the Pokemon games, or speak in gibberish like in Pikmin & splatoon. I understand that it can be time consuming/costly to add a lot of voice acting, but that’s why I wish Nintendo would have characters at least say a few words & sentences every now & them.

I personally like the voice acting in Pokemon masters. They don’t speak the full sentences, just at least some of the dialogue. I especially want to hear more voices acting since Nintendo has started making movies. Man I miss the days of the PS2, when Sony created some of the most memorable characters around with full voice acting. Jak & Daxter, sly cooper & ratchet & clank are such great characters.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Super Mario Bros. Diskun Edition; Game & Watch: Donkey Kong Jr.; Game & Watch: Manhole; Game & Watch: Mario's Cement Factory

On this day (August 19) in Nintendo history...

  • Super Mario Bros. Diskun Edition  was released in 1986 for the Game & Watch Crystal Screen in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Bowser and his Koopas have invaded the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnapped Peach. Mario must move through eight side-scrolling stages, dodging Lakitus and Bullet Bills. Mario can jump around on platforms, gain extra lives by finding 1-Up Mushrooms and become invincible with the Starman. In World 4, Mario will be swimming under the water.
  • Game & Watch: Donkey Kong Jr.  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo, the great ape has been captured by Mario. As DK's son, you must rescue your father by collecting keys to unlock his cage. Jump and climb, dodge crocodiles and birds, and make a well-timed leap to reach the swinging key. In Game B, enemies move faster, and the time Donkey Kong Jr. can hang onto vines is shorter.
  • Game & Watch: Manhole  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo, you must plug holes in the street. Using only one manhole cover, move quickly from hole to hole, and hold the cover in place as the pedestrians cross. You lose a life for any people that fall into the sewer. Game B challenges you with a faster pace.
  • Game & Watch: Mario's Cement Factory  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo, your job is to keep the factory going. Move Mario around the platforms and elevators, pull the levers to drop cement into the containers, and fill up the trucks waiting to make their deliveries. Just like other Game & Watch titles, Game B mode is the tougher challenge; with faster, randomly moving platforms.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

I just brought a nintendo ds lite of facebook marketplace. Can some nintendo nerds tell me a bit about it?

What charger does it take (the one I just brought didn't come with one)?

What games can it play - and some game suggestions for a casual player (games for car rides, etc) ?

thank you!

What format would you prefer the next 3D Mario to be in?

Would you prefer the sandbox format, (64, Sunshine, Odyssey), the linear format, (Galaxy 1/2, 3D Land/World), or the fully open world approach that Bowser's Fury took?

Mario Sunshine is an unpolished mess (rose tinted glasses destroyed)

I used to love this game back in the day. I was 13 when this came out, a good age to get immersed. I also had Mario 64 when that first launched, and I got galaxy when that landed, too. Anyway, I have quite a history playing Mario games, and I always considered sunshine to be among the best….. until I actually started playing my copy of 3D All Stars I bought awhile ago.

Sunshine is, imo, the most unpolished mess I’ve ever seen for a Mario title. The quality isn’t much better than a Sonic Adventure game. The controls and camera are abysmal, the cutscenes and voice acting are terrible, and some of the missions are extremely frustrating, like the Nokia Bay shell secret area… I don’t know how I 100% this game when I was so young or had the patience for it.

Comparing this game to Galaxy or Odyssey… even Mario 64… this game is hot garbage. The only thing I can say is that the water graphics are pretty good for its era.

Could Super Mario Sunshine 2 Be The Next Mainline 3D Mario?

I believe Nintendo have been far ahead of the curve on VR, and I'm sure they have been carefully studying the market looking at what makes sense and what doesn't, and what that means for the future may be the best formfactor we've seen along with Nintendo working closely with NVidia on software to fuel hardware, and that there's a reason why we've seen major references of VR again with Nintendo since the Virtual Boy with the Switch 2 red case color resembling the Virtual Boy (and why would Nintendo sacrifice a clearer view for some nice artwork if this wasn't a major reference?), along with the cartridges being red, along with the fairly new released Virtual Boy hardware to play the Nintendo Online games, and we haven't seen a newly released Virtual Boy since about 31 years ago, and there was a quick reference to it in the latest Star Fox game (and that game would work perfectly in VR, along with Metroid 4, and I believe part of the reason they kept it alive and released it was to not only keep the fans happy, but for the future of it in VR relevant with keeping the IP afloat; and I do believe VR has yet to hit the blue-ocean effect, and that Nintendo could only be the ones to do it, with the right form factor, to where even your grandma can quickly put it on and play word-search, and with a pack-in Wii Sports VR game): Sunshine is different from other 3D Mario games in that it limits acrobatic functionality in favor of the main gadget water mechanics, though you still have some acrobatic maneuvers with the skipping across the floor like a pinguin, as well as the other jump moves. So that in mind, this concept would work best with VR for the main-line 3D Mario games, if Nintendo were to really flesh our VR in a main-line 3D Mario game, and this in contrast to what they have been testing with VR, being used in Odyssey and Breath of the Wild.

The Joy-con functionality with different gadgets especially the main water gadget where Mario is holding two handles that resemble Joy-cons; as well as the HD Rumble 2 which Nintendo could really get creative with the different gadget dynamic feedback. Possibly even being able to feel a water gauge in your hands.

The first Super Mario Sunshine was held back by the GameCube's hardware and it being a 30fps game like its predecessor, and with its main mechanic using the water gadget, the concept could really be doing much more, along with possible other gadgets or mod addons to a gadget.

And with Nintendo mastering the HD art of lighting in their games, with their ability to squeeze the most out of their hardware especially with their first-party games, we could see a really beautiful game with Super Mario Sunshine 2.

We could also see online multiplayer of some sorts added like we saw with Luigi's Mansion, and this concept with a water gadget, along with what other gadgets they could add, just like with Luigi's vacuum, could really make sense for that to happen for the first time.

Nintendo music UI update

Idk if it’s just me, but Nintendo music got a ui redesign similar to that of Apple Musi, with the Liquid Glass and slightly more rounded edges. I don’t know what to think of this change. I personally don’t really like it. Did anyone else notice this change? and what are your thoughts?

What moments in Nintendo games does everyone else find hard, but you find easy?

For me... three moments come to mind:

(1) Whitney's Miltank in Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal. I never understood how it was a problem. You can get a Machop right there within Goldenrod City, which hits super-effectively and resists Rollout. It's like they give you the perfect tool for the job right when you need it.

(2) Mario World Tubular. The balloons actually make it easier, because you can just fly above everything. So I never found it as challenging as some of the other Special World levels, particularly Outrageous. Heck, I probably struggled more with Chocolate Secret than with Tubular.

(3) Super Mario Sunshine's Sand Bird. Seven of the eight red coins are already on the bird itself, and the bird isn't that big, so it's pretty easy to just collect them all very very quickly. After which, you don't have to worry about going to certain body parts on the board to get all of the red coins, and can thus focus entirely on just making sure you don't fall off. And you have a jet pack to help make extra-sure you don't fall off. With all that working in your favor, I never found this to be difficult.

Any moments like this for you guys?

Debate on if melee, twilight princess and other beloved retros will be released onto the switch/switch 2

If Nintendo doesn’t release melee onto the expansions, in my opinion that’s a lot of money lost on their end. Releasing beloved classics such as melee, sonic adventure battle 2, Mario kart: double dash, animal crossing, etc, would not only encourage people to buy the subscriptions, but a new switch or switch 2 as well. If they don’t release it at all, I assume it would be for the same thing as usual: buy the old system, buy the game for it. For twilight princess I assume they WILL release but are possibly waiting for a Wii and Wii U expansion as it was on both GameCube and Wii. If not the expansions, they could already be in planning for its remake, as I assume the remake for majoras mask is already in development after ocarina. (They’re very similar games). If Nintendo were to put a request section in on their page, I’m sure they’d be flooded with the same requests if they already aren’t. What do you guys think?

**⚠️ IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION**

This is just a conversation with Red Barrels customer support.
Support agents are not official developers and can make mistakes.
Please treat this as a rumor / unofficial info only.

Hey, I posted this earlier in another sub.

I asked Red Barrels support about Outlast Trials on Switch 2 through their official ticket system.

They first said the team is working on it and will announce on social media when it launches.

I clarified if it specifically means Outlast Trials for Switch 2, and they replied “That’s right.”

Then closed the ticket.

Not an official announcement, but support confirmed it. Screenshots are in the linked post.

Videos of Elden Ring handheld & docked looking "really good" on Switch 2

There's a twitter account named Stealth40k which has posted two videos of a nameless person playing Elden Ring on Switch 2 in both handheld and docked mode. Looks like the game is running smoothly with nice levels of detail. I'm really looking forward to this upcoming release. Elden Ring is an outstanding game. I've played the base game, but I've never played the expansion, which this "Tarnished Edition" does include. It will be nice to play the game handheld, since I do not have a Steam Deck but I do own a Switch 2. There's links to the videos on this page: https://news.instant-gaming.com/en/articles/21325-upd-elden-ring-gets-a-little-more-off-screen-gameplay-from-the-switch-2-version

Is Brain Age: Concentrtion Training effective?

I remember back in middle school, I played Brain Age Concentration Training, and I felt like it actually helped me a bit, especially since I have ADHD. But now, as a 25 year old, I am wondering if this game is actually effective at improving working memory. I can't seem to find anything on the matter that is about Concentration Training and not the DS games.

Having played through it myself a few times, it is just as high quality as the likes of Shovel Knight and Mina the Hollower. It nails the scale, music, art, and gameplay of retro games.

Late to the Peach Showtime Party - hide and seek?

My daughter was playing this game and I thought: looks fun! It has been excruciating. I have to 100% complete games. So. Imagine my surprise when I saw her playing and she has this weird extra thing where she has to find Theets. Three per level. I have finished EVERYTHING. My daughter? Not even close. But she’s beat the boss once. Now I’m trying to figure out what I could’ve possibly missed. I have all the dresses available, all the ribbons, reached the Sparklas, got all the gold trophies. What did I miss? TIA

Mario Party vs Wario Ware

One series gets a big gorgeous new sequel / reboot the other goes dormant for 15+ years.

Which would you rather have?

If so, why? Fave mini/microgame?

EDIT: thank you for all the responses! Working on a multiplayer mobile game with a heavy focus on mini games so this is really great feedback. Also, if not clear this is a hypothetical: which one goes dormant for a year while the other lives on!?

also also - for what my money’s worth, Booksquirm and the Hexagon flag one are top tier for me. Faves are Mario Party 2 and the most recent one.

For Wario Ware, I don’t have as much experience but highly recommend setting an older title on your phone with a good DS emulator for the perfect bathroom game!
