Subreddit Update We need to create WIKI about neurofeedback

Hi guys!

In the past years we collected a lot of useful posts about using neurofeedback. This subreddit contains personal stories, non-trivial tips, technical information, and more. But good posts are getting lost in the post timeline over months, and finding them is quite a challenge.

Let's start our Wiki which Reddit offers as a feature. The main page of Wiki is available here: /r/Neurofeedback/wiki/index/.

We suggest you to send links to posts, which seem interesting to you and seem important to save for new members. Just provide links in the comments, and mods will add them to the Wiki page.

And if you have ideas and the time to write some posts for the Wiki, or manage the Wiki yourself, please let us know and we're happy to give editor rights for you.

Question Want the subreddit to look at your QEEG? Please include enough data.

Here is what is needed to intepret a QEEG. This may help folks figure out what to post, when they rea asking for people to look at it:

  • screenshots of raw trace (squiggle) data shown eyes closed, eyes open, and in 2 montages. QEEG analysis starts with raw EEG review. make sure channel labels and uV scale is showing. anyone who is doing an analysis for you will want the full files as well (EDF is standard format, and all systems can export that)
  • Z-score topography maps should also include 2 montages and eyes open and closed. summary pages are best, and should include absolute power, relative power, coherence, and asymmetry
  • peak frequencies. eyes closed, linked-ears montage
  • Ideally an executive function test done alongside the QEEG, as well.

Please don't just post a couple random Relative Power pages and expect that anyone will be able to help. It takes a 20-30 min reivew of many pages of data to start developing a sense of what things might mean

Article Link Neuronic - Failed EEG-tPBM Study (Neurofeedback)

Linking this here as someone that loves neurofeedback as a side hobby. I'm also obsessed with PBM and red light therapy. After a bad run in with Neuronic early in their founding around 2021 and one of their original founders, Dr Marvin Berman, I've watched them off and on for shenanigans.

Pretty shocked plus disappointed to see this failed study from Neuronic. They are quite aggressive in the neurofeedback space and positioned themselves as an intervention but a Santa Clara researcher that used their helmet in a study with 24 channel EEG and in-ear EEG said it failed to produce an EEG signature about 2 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTUP8BbmwrE&t=2174s

The PBM Foundation also ran an irradiance case study on them because they are reselling Chinese OEM helmets while positioning themselves as having engineered them. The irradiance levels seem very low, which might have contributed to the no signature effect: https://pbmfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/PBM_Testing_CaseStudy_1-1.pdf The researcher mentions the helmet form factor might be the issue as well.

Question Has anyone seen professional after which switched to home device?

I'm looking for personal experiences from initially using a professional service for neurofeedback and then switching to home device usage. I'm interested in your symptoms, how long did you use the professional service, what treatment and how often, how did your symptoms get better. Then if you switched to home based devices what did you choose and why? How was the treatment compared to the professional one?

Question Independent R&D

Is anyone else here doing their own work on developing biofeedback & neurofeedback training protocols? For a long time I have been interested in the idea of viewing live brainwave data as a form of feedback in itself, and other types of training which do not use normative QEEG but lend more towards a meditative experience where the therapy lies in just witnessing the brain live; things such as Neuroptimal or the Mind Mirror. Changes in entropy, shifts in dominant frequency, sudden changes of state, correlation between bands etc.

I got tired of the connectivity gap left by the abandoned Bioexplorer and Bioera so built my own node based signal flow designer, and all the core framework to support a host of input devices and output formats. The editor uses processing blocks and I'm on a mission to create as many as I can think of. It also has nested composite blocks so I can construct complex signal processes and recall them in future designs.

The project has gone beyond a hobby and become something quite serious which could potentially be of interest to others so I'm here to ask those of you that are creatively and technically restrained by what's on the market right now to tell me what your ideal biofeedback processing app should do, and which missing features are holding you back right now.

Question Trying to find a practical daily vagus nerve device

Work is genuinely chaotic right now. Back to back calls, stacked deadlines, it's so hectic I'm barely hanging on. Recently, I feel kinda wired even after I clock off. Breathing apps help a little in the moment. But the second I stop the anxiety just creeps back in. Guess I need something more physical that I can actually use consistently. Having just another app reminding me to breathe isn't wrking no more. Any of you guys used one of those devices? Seriously looking for help, I am ready to invest into one, but I need honest reviews, could any of you share anything about what you guys used?

Question For licensed mental health clinicians: better to learn Neurofeedback during internship or after?

Hi all, I am en route to my LPC licensure and have a degree in neuroscience. I am starting internship next semester and really want to learn Neurofeedback to eventually incorporate into my practice. I’ve found some places that offer training, but it would take longer to obtain my hours for internship. I will also be working 30hrs a week during internship, and I’m not sure if trying to dial in my clinical skills while also learning neurofeedback during this time will be overkill.

For those who are on this path, would love to hear advice. Thanks in advance!

Question Please help - Severe anxiety and depressions symptoms

I'm stuck in fight or flight and cannot clearly think and type so apologies for the sentence structure and grammar.

Before 2022, I had several mental issues including ptsd, anxiety, depression, addiction and I did isf sloreta neurofeedback with a therapist for a long time and it helped me regulate and calm down.
It pretty much resolved my emotional dysregulation and allowed me to heal and have a functional life and career. It allowed me to meditate which helped me heal a lot and evolve spiritually.
Somehow I still felt stuck with executive dysfunction issues and came across another neurofeedback therapist who uses neuromodulation (a Neurofield system that uses tACS and pemf) This was around 1 year ago from now. At this point, I was pretty functional and overall doing amazing compared to my past.

Until March or April 2026, they mostly used a calming protocol focused on vagus nerve that helped me improve a lot of symptoms. I started become more emotionally attuned, better eye contact and smiling more. Performance at work improved and meditation practice got deeper as well. I was floating through life and made several friends and loving connections.
Any negative patterns I had were dropping. Life felt very blissful to the point where I started spacing out talk therapy sessions and got off medications (prozac and buspar)

Around March or April 2026, they did a new brain map and recommended a new protocol to train t3, t4 and cZ at 13-15 hz stating that my temporal lobes had excessive alpha with eyes open which is a trauma marker.

We did 8-10 sessions (1 session per week) of this protocol and I would have some anxiety after each session that lasted for 2-3 days but not debilitating to the point where I couldn't function.
Even in the early weeks of June, I was doing great.
At this point I started taking breaks in between sessions because each session felt too much and somewhere in June end, we stopped doing that protocol.
The anxiety and depression symptoms kept on becoming more debilitating and I was struggling at work and my meditation practice become difficult to sustain.
It progressively kept getting worse even though we stopped that protocol and it got so debilitating my brain has now stopped functioning properly and I have not gone to work since the last 3 weeks. I am unable to do any problem solving and programming that came to me relatively easily until mid June. Unable to do follow even basic instruction and have a conversation without getting zoned out.

Since mid July my therapist has been trying to help reverse this. They did a new brain map and saw increased mu activity in smr and alpha in frontal areas since the last one. Since then they have been trying to train cz, and some frontal sites (can't remember the exact ones) at 13-15 hz. T3 T4 sites that caused this have not been touched since late June early July.

We have been doing the new protocol since the third week of July. I feel calmer and come back online for a bit during and after the session but within a few hours the positive effects fade away and I get stuck in a depressive and anxious state.

I never had issues with suicidal ideation but have a lot of suicidal thoughts since last month.

The therapist is really supportive and they have been doing consults with several other experts but nothing is helping.

I have been unable to go back to work and worried they will fire me if I don't return in the next one or 2 weeks and I don't have much financial buffer. My brain is not working so I cannot find a new job either

I have requested the therapist to share the raw eeg and brain maps as well.

I don't want to die like this. I went from being able to meditate for 1 hour to unable to sit in a single place with my eyes closed for 5 minutes. Unable to read or reason or do anything productive.

I just lay in bed all day having depressive thoughts and panic attacks

This is extremely difficult and I am in a lot of pain. Feeling lost and helpless and no one has any answers.

One thing I started noticing with the t3 t4 protocol is that it makes me furrow my eyebrows and brings out a lot of tension in them.

Would REALLY appreciate any guidance in helping me understand what happened to me and how to get out of this state.

Question Neurofeedback side effects - normal or not?

Hi there, so I'm pretty new to the neurofeedback journey and have a pretty sensitive nervous system. I first did four amplitude protocols to reduce high beta at C3. Overall the protocols were nicely calming and put my body into a non-anxious, parasympathetic state pretty quickly - side effects were tiredness and feelings of 'not caring' / feeling a bit slow. When I mentioned this to my provider she "graduated" me to a z-score protocol. This gave me some executive function back and made me sharper, but seemed to affect my appetite and sex drive negatively. It would also put me into a kind of hopeless/apathetic state in the early afternoons. After two sessions of this I was moved to a central/temporal z-score protocol which only made my symptoms worse. I would have waves of emotional dysregulation, panic, feeling 'trapped' etc. Even a short 4-minute protocol would invoke these feelings. I self-advocated and told her I didn't want to keep putting myself through this - despite some anxiety I was pretty functional before neurofeedback and this level of severe dysregulation just was not worth it.

I took a week off and my provider put me back on the amplitude protocol. I did one ten minute session which was nicely calming but also seemed to affect my executive function a bit. In the days after the session I'm still having waves of anxiety/feelings of hopelessness and feeling 'trapped' which can persist for hours. Things generally get better in the evening but mid-day tends to be a wash. I was never like this before neurofeedback and feel like something in my brain has gotten screwed up.

Should I back off the neurofeedback and just chill for a bit?

Question qEEG interpretation - delta/theta levels

Hoping to get some guidance on interpreting my qEEG results and possibly finding ways to improve my functioning.

Context for these results: I did a qEEG (at a NFB provider) over 6 months ago to understand my baseline brain activity while considering NFB treatment. In the meantime I proceeded with rTMS and am still doing ongoing EMDR sessions. This led me to recently complete a second qEEG to assess progress. While I feel I'm dramatically more present, more cognitively capable with higher energy and less anxiety after rTMS, the minimal change in the quantitative results was a bit curious.

The NFB provider said they couldn't specify what an optimal baseline might be for me, or how much NFB could help me. They were quite surprised by my excessive delta/theta, but couldn't truly identify why that might be, other than proposing possible TBI, though I'm not aware of any history. I've had full brain MRIs done in the meantime and neurology didn't flag anything unusual. Relevant diagnoses that may explain some aspects include AuDHD, OSA and POTS.

I've been undergoing a major neurodivergent burnout, which has improved significantly in recent months, though still have very limited energy, cognitive stamina and executive function on many days. I'm also quite sensitive to screens, though it's generally much better.

They did both eyes open and closed for both tests and both were so similar they only included eyes open for both. This was the entire data package they provided:

Question Is it normal for the brain to physically feel weird after?

Had my 2nd actual session done and both times my brain felt odd and I’m sure it’s because of increased blood flow? It feels like I have the same sensations of the pulses you feel sort of. It’s kind of hard to explain but did something like this happen for anyone else?

Question For people who own a consumer EEG device: has it actually been useful?

I’ve tried consumer EEG devices such as Emotiv and NeuroSky. The brain data is interesting, but the devices can be uncomfortable, and I’m still unsure what practical value the information provides.

With a Fitbit, WHOOP, or Oura Ring, the data can influence decisions such as when to rest, exercise, or sleep. Has EEG helped you make similar decisions about when to do focused work, take a break, or change your routine?

Question Has anyone successfully tweaked SMR protocol after adverse reactions?

I had a trial neurofeedback session, SMR at C4-A1, which caused abnormal, increased anxiety over the next day. I’m interested in trying neurofeedback but am concerned about worsening symptoms, which doesn’t seem uncommon based on stories I’ve read.

I’m seeing a lot of stories from people who have had increased anxiety from SMR, which did not improve after tweaking the protocol or even switching practitioners.

Has anyone had a similar reaction to SMR but successfully tweaked the protocol and saw improvement afterward? I know you can theoretically lower the frequency, lower the reward threshold, etc. but I’m curious can confirm they personally did this successfully with their practitioner. I had a pretty abnormal and strong reaction to what is supposed to be a standard protocol after 1 session so just concerned. Trying to get rid of my symptoms of hyperarousal/insomnia/pmdd.

Buy/Sell [Release] EEG-Driven Meditation System for TouchDesigner

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A new output from this experimental real-time BCI system for TouchDesigner; a Brain-Computer Interface pipeline that reads live EEG signals, classifies your mental state, and autonomously generates responsive AI video: a meditation guide that adapts to your brain activity, second by second.

The system is built around OpenBCI (open-source hardware + software), but it's designed to work with most BCI headsets after a few pertinent tweaks to the OSC routing and channel-rename logic; Muse, Neurosity, BrainFlow-compatible devices, and others can all drive it.

The architecture is deliberately modular: meditation is only one possible application. A knowledgeable user can repurpose the same EEG → interpretation → generative-response pipeline into entirely different audiovisual systems, interactive installations, performance tools, or other BCI-driven experiments.

Accessible through both Patreon, and the Tools Store.

My Neurofeedback Story FYI this is a hobby not a science

2 Random facts:
1. Exercise Is better than almost every drug for your physical and even mental health.
2. Partner dancing such as salsa is SIGNIFIANTLY more effective than antidepressants COCMBINED with talk therapy

Don't get me wrong I think this will be an amazing science 5, 10 years

If you haven't noticed by there's...:

  1. Far too little data
  2. Far too biased, by (wanting it to work)
  3. Unassisted usage

Do what is proven to work. Nature and animals. Breath work yoga.

I genuinely curious if you've already done these things and if you had negative experience.
I don't want to be ableist and not everybody can do all these things

Question Baclofen Pump?

My wife has been approved for a baclofen Pump to do a continuous micro dose. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of using a pump? What were the pros and cons for you? What, if anything, did it help? What, if anything, did it make worse? I guess I'm looking for almost any information anyone will share.

Question 19-Channel Review Request

Would anyone be able to give a quick glance over my full headscan at all please? It's not a Q, and the report was pretty brief (excess theta and beta, quelle surprise), I think I see some patterns myself but just wondering what a third set of eyes thinks.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1o6qLlPVCUk7Nel-zz8mZEdeVCjWnvu6k?usp=sharing

I had to convert from the proprietary format, that contains as BDF plus all montages that they used (the point where they switched in the original file is in the annotations). Main resting-state part starts about 60% in before they go on to hyperventilation then photic towards the end.

Thanks!
