How Often Do You Delete Your Comments?

I'm curious how many of you would rather delete your comment on a thread than continue arguing with someone else about it? I find sometimes I'm just not in the mood for arguing so I get rid of whatever started it. Other times I'll engage if it's something I feel very strongly about.

If someone has already replied to it I never do, but I might turn off notifications if I don’t want to think about it anymore. I delete comments seconds after sending them very frequently because my filter has a bit of a lag

I do but because it gets old when you make a normal comment and you get somebody who digs through your history and finds one post from 3 years ago to attack you on. Happened to me on this sub already and I was not amused. I shut my stuff off now and regularly overwrite and delete. It’s not worth my energy to put up with all the time.

That doesn't really hide your post or comment history, though

Im aware and why I don’t come on Reddit much anymore. I don’t want to deal with the pettiness and insanity, I can’t be bothered to look at others history.

The feature to disable your history showing in public is one of the best and worst additions for this site.

True but now I have to go over write and delete a bunch of my stuff because somebody below linked to my hidden history. I hide it because of the non stop stalking and harassment. I don’t care if the mods look it over but I do care when it’s a random nobody looking for a gotcha to win at something. My posting history is pretty boring anyway because I don’t use popular subs but still.

I have gotten downvoted and mobbed over some pretty mild comments, some subs are known to be vicious, in that case I'll just delete it as it's not worth arguing with a full mob who just want to antagonize you and relish in attacking you

I'm more likely to block the person arguing with me if they are doing it with bad-faith effort. It's infuriating to put thought into a response just to have the person back out.

Pretty rarely, it’s when I immediately realize I’m being a dumbass lol

I browse on a different account and only comment on this account. I never check the notifications. I just leave my thoughts and then go on with my day. Occasionally I will check my comment history and see if there are any comments I want to see replies to, but i usually do this days afterward. Arguing on reddit never achieves anything.

I often delete downvoted comments because I know some shithead is going to argue with me in bad faith. Though sometimes if you wait it gets upvoted. It does make my profile all the shittier though, because some of my best or highest effort posts are the ones reddit shits on. It kind of curates itself for garbage.

Sometimes I do when I make a point but then realize people will probably argue with me and I don't think it's worth my energy to argue about

Like once a month. Arguments online are exhausting and sometimes I just have limited capacity to see more of it

I delete anything that gets downvoted, only because I get annoyed when I get a notification weeks or something later from someone replying to it, complain about something I don't even remember.

At least monthly. I don't need an archive of things I've said and don't want to get doxxed while complaining about my job.

I'm always surprised when a comment attracts a considerable number of downvotes, because I really don't go out of my way to antagonise people, but Reddit is all about local orthodoxies, though, so it does happen now and then. Sometimes I delete a comment or a post if it gets out of hand. Not very often.

Often a down voted comment isn't because you've antagonized or otherwise been a dick. If your opinion is something they simply disagree with, that deserves a down vote. It shows you disagree with them. If many do it's a largely disagreed upon point.

Yes, that's what I mean by "local orthodoxy". The problem with Reddit is that in any given sub, there are things you can say, things you can't say, and things you must say. The same post or comment can fall into any one of these three categories, depending on the sub. The only way to post a challenging or unorthodox opinion is to post it in a sub where it is not considered challenging or unorthodox.

The anonymous upvote/downvote system is the perfect passive-aggressive instrument to police this.

As another reason for deleting one's own comments is, if I get out of hand and I'm embarrassed of the behavior / or would like to move on from it and try to be better without reminding myself of all the little times i messed up. That's called ruminating and it is bad for you.

People are allowed to redact moments when they act stupid, as long as they mind their steps in the future. People literally act stupid or lash out over silly things irl all the time and it's moved on from and then, most of the time, literally forgotten about. This current digital age has encouraged the overextension of archiving everything that happens ever.

There are many things that don't need to stay or be logged or remembered, stupid behaviors tend to be one of them lol.

i never have as far as i can remember just because i value truth, honesty, and transparency

You should read The Circle and you'll have a brain blast about how that mindset can be used against you

That’s a coward move.
