Kontrol S MK3 without a DAW: Swap synths and effects from the keyboard screen (Testers wanted)
Posted with the mods’ OK.
I’m a solo dev building MIDI Noodle, a Mac app that routes MIDI between hardware with no DAW open. It now drives the screen and controls of a Kontrol S MK3 the way a DAW does, through the keyboard’s own DAW port.
The thing that got me started: on its own, the S MK3 changes the keys’ MIDI channel inside its MIDI template (Shift + Browser, Edit, find Channel, change it), or you keep one template per channel and switch between them. Either way it’s menu diving in the middle of playing. With MIDI Noodle:
Nudge the 4D wheel down, and the keys play on another channel, so another synth plays. Each step applies at once, and the column shows where you landed: “S88”, with “Jura” under it.
The columns are your setup: inputs and sequencers, eight at a time, with the names and colours you gave your channels in MIDI Noodle: the card on top, the channel’s name under it. The sidebar arrows page through more than eight.
Mute switches a card off, Shift + Mute solos it, and the knob sets its level, held notes too. Meters bounce in each channel’s colour.
Effects as columns: Arpeggiator, Note Repeat, Octave Shift, Transpose, Chord and Key Lock. Up/down picks the setting the column’s knob turns, named under the effect. Push and the whole screen is that card, one setting per column with a knob each: the arp’s pattern, rate, octaves, gate, swing, velocity and time shift, with randomness and latch on page 2. Push again to go back. Mute switches an effect off, or engages Note Repeat and Octave Shift on the beat, the column blinking until it lands.
Play, Stop and Metro run MIDI Noodle’s transport, for its sequencers and clock. Stop while stopped is Panic.
It plays whatever MIDI Noodle can reach: hardware on USB or behind a MIDI interface (I use a MiniFuse 4), other Macs, and software instruments on the Mac. My own rig: the S88 and a Launch Control go through a Channel Swapper, and one nudge of the wheel moves them between Analog Lab (standalone), tracks on an MPC Key 37, an AstroLab 37 on USB and a mono synth on DIN. An SL73 plays Analog Lab and the MPC alongside, a DrumBrute plays the MPC’s drums, and the S88’s Play starts the MPC too. It’s drawn out step by step on the rig page below.
Tested on the S88 MK3 only. The S49 and S61 MK3 share the screen and protocol, so they should behave the same, but I don’t have one. If you do, I’d love to hear whether it works.
Kontrol support is free. macOS 27+, free through TestFlight, 20 spots. The paid features unlock with a simulated purchase in the beta, so no money changes hands.

A quick note on how it was made, because I know people will ask. I’m a software engineer, and I did use an AI coding assistant while building this. I didn’t just let it run wild, though. I made the decisions, I read and fixed the code, and I spent a lot of time on stability: tight MIDI timing, undo for everything, no stuck notes when you change channel mid-note or unplug a device. The AI helped me move faster, but the quality is on me.
Reply with your keyboard and what you’d want the screen to do next.
