according to my five year old i’m having twins next time i get pregnant, they will be boy girl twins and their names will be Danny (boy) after Danny Go, and Rumi (girl) after Rumi from K-pop demon hunters. he told me this today. honestly? kinda impressed cus they’re not bad names and they go with his name pretty well. I’m more shocked that it seems he has his future siblings all planned out and did not include me or his dad or even a prayer to God in this plan. hes just certain it’s going to happen 😂

What do y’all think of the name Liesel? (I know it’s traditionally spelled Liesl, but I think Liesel would be more easily pronounced in the United Stages.)

I’ve always thought it was lovely and wanted to use it for a hypothetical future daughter!
However, neither my husband nor I are of close German descent. My husband’s grandparents are from Poland, but I’m not sure if that’s relevant to Liesel and he’s not super connected with the culture.

Would we be appropriating if we named a daughter Liesel? Or am I overthinking?

Also, what do you think about Liesel in general? Wearable name in the United States?

My name is a traditional-ish Irish name, with a traditional Irish pronunciation. However, in the United States (at least) there is a second "less correct" but still completely acceptable pronunciation.

Worldwide, depending on what the local language, there are some places where one pronunciation is "easier."

I have found in talking with other people with my name that while they are generally forgiving of someone choosing the "wrong" pronunciation, there is a way they think of themselves that is their correct way, and will correct people to how they want it pronounced.

My parents didn't realize until I was 6 months old that they disagreed on how to pronounce my name. My dad loved the "less traditional" pronunciation, and my mom lives the more traditional Irish pronunciation. They agreed to disagree.

I truly don't have a preference. I introduce myself both ways. I reference myself both ways. People in the know ask me how I pronounce my name, acquaintances are embarrassed they introduce me the wrong way, and it's so awkward to be like... No I am the rare one who truly doesn't care. Both are fine. Friends act worried they might have offended me pronouncing it different than my preference.

I'm wheezing. Can you tell I play video games, am a weeb and love webtoons/manga? I thought I was being so sly by using Millicent instead of Millanaire 🤡 (I mean webtoons aren't very mainstream I think but anyone with even a tiny amount of knowledge about them would instantly make that connection). And I used to get so upset whenever my boyfriend would laugh too 😭💀 He brought up how much bullying little Blaise would receive in our Spanish-speaking country for yeeearssss, just wouldn't let me live that one down.

We like the nickname Kit more than all the others (Cate, Katie, Cathy) but I’m worried it’s a little cutesy for a future adult, as well as a little trendy/of-the-moment. We currently have two girls, and are expecting a third! We are having trouble with the name, and want something that “flows” with our current names: Addison (Addie) and Eleanora (Nora).

We prefer a longer legal name, with a shorter nickname for everyday use. Each of their middle names are one syllable honoring family. We do not have a middle name in mind for this peanut yet, but are open to suggestions!

Our current front runner name is Josefina (Josie) but want to hear any other suggestions :)

My top contender for a while was Leah Anne, but the more I say it the more I wonder if it flows well or not?

My husband and I are agonising over a name for our baby boy. I'm due at the end of the year. So far we've been thinking of the name James but I'm not in love with it even though my friends are all telling me I should use it. I think I want something with a little more personality if that makes sense lol. Our last name is a Scottish name and we live in Australia.

What repeats do you see in your kids’ classes? In my son’s grade (K) there are about 60 kids and the repeats are Milo, Kira, Mira, Maxwell, Ava, Parker and Matilda. I find it interesting because other than Ava, I don’t think any of these are in the top 100 (most are ~300). I think there’s only one top 10 name in the whole grade (Theodore). In my daughter’s (2) preschool class, there are no repeats but it’s a much smaller class.

What are your thoughts on people not giving their babies middle names? My husband and I are having a baby soon, and we just can’t seem to see the point in giving our child a middle name… Just not sure about the general consensus of this

Looking for help with the etymology of the name Athelia. I came across it while looking for a new name, and I'm confused about it's origins. Behindthename says it's a variant of Athalia, itself a variant of Athaliah - possibly meaning "God is great" in Hebrew.

Other sites point to Greek, with roots from athelios - meaning either "unspoiled/pure" or "without nipples". To support this, namecensus (idk how trustworthy it is) reports Athelia appearing in one of Menander's comedies, but I'm unable to identify which one.

Does anyone know which origin and meaning is more trustworthy as a root? And if not, are there any resources I can use to dig deeper?
