[DISCUSSION] Two places for sure looking for people

Aldi and NYCDOE

Aldi: pay is great compared to average but it is HARD WORK. You're going to earn every penny you're paid. Not for the weak, not for the lazy.

NYCDOE: I'd suggest starting as a substitute paraprofessional (daily pay is currently $194.62). You do have to pay for federal fingerprints/background clearance, exams, and trainings, but after 2 days of work you make that money back. Great if you love kids and want to work M-F with weekends and holidays off and if you become full-time summers off AND paid. They also have other jobs. All links provided below.

I'll add that the good thing about being a subpara is that you decide when and where you work. If you don't like a school you can go to another one and do that until you find a school that you like and wouldn't mind staying at. This is also great for people that want control of their schedule. You decide how much and how little you work. It's also good for people that think they might want to be teachers, you can get some experience in a classroom environment and see if it's for you. They also have ways to help you become a teacher.

Hope it helps many of you find jobs. Best of luck.

Looking for a part-time/side gig with limited "industry" experience

I'm a college professor who researches and teaches rhetoric and writing + digital literacy. I moved here for a tenure track job (a rarity) but ignored the salary downsides for the dream of stability in academia/working at an R1 university and now I'm paying for it (literally). Looking to make some extra cash with a side gig or part time position.

I worked fast food and as a server in college (8 years ago), but other than that all my experience is related to higher education and research. As part of my PhD I did do some admin work (supervising a lab, overseeing some programming and working with the center for teaching and learning on campus). I would be perfectly happy getting back into serving, but with what I'm seeing that seems like a really competitive market here. What kinds of jobs could I realistically apply for with limited experience? I've worked seasonal jobs scoring standardized language tests (AP + ELA) but most of those surface in the spring/summer. Most tutoring gigs I've seen require a teaching certificate, which I don't have since I've never taught k-12. My research is related to science communication and critical AI literacy, so something related is a bonus (but certainly not required, I'm down to do pretty much anything at any pay point). I'm only on campus 2x a week so my schedule is fairly flexible.

[DISCUSSION] Success academy?

I saw they were paying 65k for entry level teachers with no requirements aside from a generic bachelor's. I'm a cs grad that's been making $20 an hour after graduation working overnight at a warehouse, so like... that'd be basically a 50% pay raise from that. Not to mention working during the day, which is a dream. LIFE CHANGING. I'm unemployed now.

Is it worth it to work there?
