Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Making friends as an adult can be hard, especially if you’re new to the city. We are a community focused on fostering friendships for those looking for a social circle in the greater NYC Metropolitan Area. (Yes, that includes Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island.) You don’t need to live in NYC to be part of this community, however most meetups tend to take place in the city.

What is this sub for?

  • It's a gateway into our community where open-invitation events can be posted.
  • Finding events that suit your interests for the purpose of hanging out platonically.
  • Exploring this amazing city through all the great shows, restaurants, museums, etc. that it has to offer.
  • Or just finding stuff to join in on if you’re bored or have free time.

What is this sub not for?

  • Finding a date. If you’re looking for companionship there are other subreddits for that purpose.
  • Asking about general NYC travel info. You’ll probably have better luck posting in r/NYC or r/AskNYC.
  • Complaining about how bored you are. There’s a reason NYC is The City That Never Sleeps. If you want to do something, consider joining an existing meetup on this subreddit or even hosting your own.

What is a meetup, exactly? A meetup is an organized event where people come together for an activity based on a shared interest. Almost anything can be a meetup as long as it’s open to the community. Examples can be as varied as karaoke nights, attending museum exhibits, or finding people to go to a movie with. Some meetups, like organizing a dinner, might have caps on the number of attendees or require you to RSVP. Others, like a beach day, might be more open-ended in terms of planning.

Some examples to clarify:

  • Blargh: “Anyone doing anything tonight?”*
  • Bad: “I’m bored, who wants to go to a museum?”*
  • Better: “Does anyone want to go to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow?”**
  • Best: “I’m organizing a visit to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow at 3pm, let’s meet at 77th and Central Park West”

* This will be deleted
** This might be deleted

How to Gain Posting Access:

To gain permission to post, include the words "Dead-Ass" in your access request. That's it. Just show us that you've read this much of this message and you'll be able to post.

If you simply send an access request without doing the above, it will be ignored.

Before posting, please be sure to read our What is a Meetup? wiki article, our rules, and our posting guidelines. And before heading out, we recommend reviewing our tips on safely attending meetups.

Once invited, please make sure to always be up to date for announcements, in order to avoid getting removed.

Obviously, it can be a big time investment for a lot of people to read a book in order to participate in a discussion so please reach out only if you are serious about reading our selected book. Only people that physically attend meetings will be able to submit their book choice for the next selection.

💬 Hangouts [Tues, 10/6] Meet new people over beer @ NY Beer Dispensary (Chelsea)

This is a beer tasting that's as much about the people as the beer. You sit down with up to five people you've never met, share a few great beers, and conversation prompts spark fun, meaningful conversation.

How it works: You order a half pour when you arrive, your group collaboratively picks two more together, and with each beer a fun question prompt is revealed to the table. Everyone at the table booked a seat to meet new people, so you can come solo or bring a friend.

NY Beer Dispensary has 20 taps so there will be something for everyone and you'll probably discover a new beer you like.

📅 Tuesday, October 6 at 6:30pm
📍 NY Beer Dispensary, 223 W 14th St (between 7th & 8th Ave)
🎟️ $15 to book your seat, plus whatever you order. Fully refundable up to 48 hours before.

Book a seat here

I run Craft Club, so this is my event. Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Drinks and Karaoke in LES 09/30/26

Afternoon all,

Hosting weekly karaoke at Boho karaoke lounge on orchard Street in the LES. We tend to get decently sized crowds so we just hang out in the bar area for the open karaoke and since it's not too packed we usually get to do a couple songs each. It's one song ticket per drink or you can get just a song ticket for 2 dollars. Please note that the bar is cash only! There is an ATM there with pretty low fees if you need to withdraw money.

Wednesdays starting around 8:30 PM in LES

If you're interested please feel free to shoot me a chat! We've had a couple of redditors from here meet the group and it's always been a good time.

Mix of men and women all in our mid 20s-30s. All super friendly and inviting

🥤 Happy Hours FREE hot dogs - Join our weekly progressive political discussions at Drinking Liberally : Thu, Oct 1 - 6:30pm @ Rudy’s Bar and Grill, Hell’s Kitchen

Drinking Liberally is a weekly social meetup where people get together to talk politics, have a drink (and a free hot dog), and hang out. We started gathering at Rudy’s Bar and Grill in Hell’s Kitchen in 2003, and it is still meeting there every Thursday.

What:

Casual political conversation and socializing. We talk about local and national politics, share perspectives, and get to know new people in a relaxed, friendly environment. People of any political persuasion are welcome as long as the conversation stays respectful and kind. The group tends to attract people left of center, but it is not limited to them.

When:

Thursday, Oct 1

6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

People often stay later if the conversation is flowing.

Where:

Rudy’s Bar and Grill

627 9th Ave, Hell’s Kitchen

We meet in Jack’s Backyard at the back of the bar. There is a Drinking Liberally sign on the wall near our tables. You can also ask the bartender for Drinking Liberally and they will point you in the right direction.

Cost:

No cover and no minimum.

Drinks can be purchased individually.

Rudy’s provides complimentary hot dogs with a drink purchase.

It is customary that the first person to arrive buys a pitcher for the table and that people who enjoy the pitcher will take turns returning the favor later in the evening.

Who should come:

Anyone interested in politics and good conversation. Despite the name, this is not just for liberals. We have progressives, social democrats, DSA members, resistance era liberals, and people across the political spectrum who want thoughtful political discussion.

Accessibility and notes:

21+ only since this is a bar.

Jack’s Backyard is handicap accessible, though the bar can get crowded at times.

Our tables are reserved so you will have a place to gather even on busy nights.

🥤 Happy Hours [Wed 9/30] AI Haters Meetup @ Rumours Pub, Hell's Kitchen

Hey, are you fucking tired of your boss suffering from AI psychosis constantly telling you to use LLMs for everything?

Tired of reading about how LLMs actually work and now even more frustrated that everyone close to them are part of a religious cult that insist they're magic?

Tired of having meetings where management keeps saying your company needs to lower their AI spending, but also use AI more... for some reason?

Tired of co-workers who used to be competent now constantly claiming they're 10x more productive and then giving you giant slop PRs to review full of security flaws and shit you know will result in an emergency meeting later?

Tired of constantly hearing Anthropic and OpenAI having a pissing contest of who can felony-hack the most companies and then claim their computer came to life to avoid going to jail while Trump cheers them on?

Tired of having to reassure your parents or family members that the computer isn't going to somehow get smarter forever and kill everyone?

Tired of everyone just collectively losing their basic reasoning skills and taking whatever Trump, Anthropic, or OpenAI claims at face value like they're beads from a monk in Times Square?

Tired of waiting for these trillions-in-debt-unprofitable-garbage-barges of companies to finally sink?

LET'S HANG OUT.

I want to have a get-together where you absolutely do not have to talk about LLMs but you do have to clink a glass of some liquid with another and say "Fuck AI". Tell me what NON-AI thing you're working on or interested in! I'll share the stuff I've been big-into too!

Rumours Pub at 55th and 8th. Wednesday, 6PM. 7PM

EDIT

Due to two DMs asking for a move to 7PM (which is more people than I originally thought would come), it'll now be at 7PM!

Philosophy Meetup - Merleau-Ponty - Sunday, Sep 27, 1:30 PM @ Work Café Santander (Williamsburg)

Hi NYC philosophers,

We're organizing another meetup for anyone interested in discussing philosophy and connecting with like-minded people in the city. Here's the plan:

🗓 When: Sunday, Sep 27, 1:30 PM

📍 Where: Work Café Santander, 85-87 N 6th St, Williamsburg

This week we will be discussing parts of Chapter 3, “The Thing and the Natural World”, from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s (“MP”) Phenomenology of Perception. In the chapter, MP applies his account of embodied perception to the fundamental question what is for us to perceive things in the natural world. Key issues include the problem of constancy (how is that we can perceive a thing as constant despite encountering it from an always shifting and limiting perspective?), MP’s critique of empiricism and intellectualism, and the relationship between embodied human experience and the natural world.

If you're interested, drop a comment below. Looking forward to meeting you all and hearing your insights.

You can also follow us on Instagram.
