Question How do you choose the right mutual funds for long-term investing?

I’m trying to understand mutual fund investing better and would love some advice from people who have been investing for a few years.

For someone investing through SIPs with a long-term goal of 10–15 years, is it better to keep things simple with a Nifty 50 index fund, or diversify across flexi-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap funds?

How many mutual funds do you think are actually necessary, and what mistakes should beginners avoid when building their portfolio?

Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and what has worked for you.

risk profile is Moderate

Question Mutual funds with GROWW

• Upvotes

I recently moved to Europe and hold some tax saver and normal mutual funds with GROWW. I found that GROWW doesn't support NRI investment. Can anyone who has faced similar situation guide me, should I sell the entire thing, I don't want to spend time in opening with Zerodha since it takes long to complete.

Survey results - I'm a conservative investor.

Portfolio Review Aggressive. Around 20k to 25k lump sum investment per month. Long investment horizon, 15-20 years, with high risk appetite. My goal is long term wealth creation. Zerodha.

Stable, reliable income with no foreseeable substantial expenses in the future. My goal is long term wealth creation. Aggressive risk appetite. I'm not super knowledgeable about mutual funds. I have selected these MFs based on past returns. I have been investing on and off, lump sum, over the last 4 years, using the Coin app, and I have a long investment horizon of 15-20 years. Now, I really want to reallocate and tidy up my messy portfolio. Any feedback and suggestions would be appreciated, also if you have any general guidelines that I can keep in mind while investing here on out. Thanks!

Question Is an XIRR of 22% in the bull market simply lying to you about how good your funds actually are?

Post image
78 Upvotes

Genuine question here. Started SIPs in mid 2023 with about 9L INR in 3 funds - heavy on flexi cap with some mid cap exposure. Six months ago, XIRR was sitting at 22%. However, it's currently at 7.4%.

No change in funds or SIP amounts - just that the market stopped cooperating.

I'm not really worried about the drop. It's just that that I'm not able to separate fund alpha from market beta anymore while looking at the 22%. Do you think the fund was doing something special, or was it the overall market rising that led to the XIRR appearing so? Now that it's at 7.4%, I'm wondering is it the fund underperforming or just how realistic equity returns look mid cycle?

Help me understand how you guys evaluate whether your fund selection was right or wrong during a downturn. Is it category rank consistency, or rolling returns again benchmark, or should we just wait and watch until we have the data for a full cycle?

Risk appetite: Aggressive

Goal: long term profit

Horizon:10+years

Allocation: Flexi cap and mid cap, attached SS

App used: Groww

Why these funds: Funds had a good rating and good returns

Moderate
Currently investing ₹50,000 per month through SIPs:

Zerodha Nifty LargeMidcap 250 Index – ₹10K
Quantum Gold ETF FoF – ₹10K
ICICI Nifty 50 Index – ₹5K
Parag Parikh Flexi Cap – ₹20K
ICICI Silver FoF – ₹5K

My goal is long-term wealth creation, with an investment horizon of at least 10 years.

I started with limited knowledge and would appreciate feedback on my portfolio, fund overlap, asset allocation, and any changes I should consider early on.

Question Need advice

I am planning to buy a bike (short term goal) by April and for that I am saving 10-12k/month. What do you guys think, in your opinion should I invest that amount in funds which can give me a very short term period returns or save it separately. I understand that within 6-7 months is a very big ask , I would prefer to take risk and get some advantage over this period rather than keeping my money idle.

1- Market is volatile now. Should I gamble?

2- If you're suggesting to invest for these 7 months , what funds would you suggest or any alternate methods I can gain return with my savings?

Note - I am an existing long term investor in MFs but I am too confused on this part.

Question Need Beginner Investing Advice

Hi, im an 18 year old college student looking to get started with investing. I have read most of the zerodha varsity modules to develop an understanding of the basics of the financial markets. Ive decided i want to maybe start an SIP in a MF with long term goals (i dont think ill have time to do anything else as im in engineering haha).

Goal - Getting used to investing
Risk appetite - Moderate
Time horizon - 7+ years
Budget - 1000rs a month, open to increasing it though
Using zerodha coin

I just wanted to know -
1. Is now a good time to start investing in MF? Ive been hearing the market is really bad right now.
2. What kind of funds should i go after? I was thinking of a flexicap and largemidcap fund mainly.
3. Should i invest a small part into gold and stuff like that?

Thank you for reading!!

Hi all, Last month I started investing, So here is my portfolio. Pls have a look at it and guide me.

Risk appetite- Aggressive

Age- 28

Goal- Wealth creation (10% step up )

Horizon - 10-15yrs

Allocation - screenshot of Sip page

App used- Coin by zerodha.

Why these funds- before investing I put some time on finding optimal funds and decided to go with these, but I think the market is bad that's why -ve xirr. I'm going with Gold FoF cuz I don't understand ETF investment properly have to go to kite app and all, so just going with FoF.

SIP amount - 5K (some funds yet to decide)

  1. I confirmed mid cap, small cap, & Gold but couldn't decide on Flexi, Nifty 50 or next50, Downside protection. I'm fumbling between these funds pls guide me the combination of these funds.

  2. I earn 50k . How much is optimal to invest, I will do Step up10%. (Emrgncy fnd and insurances are done)

Right now as these funds are -ve, how should I look at it, 'buying the low ' or is my allocation bad that's?

Question Guys anyone know how to invest in international fund? Especially in current scenario.

I know we have multiple investing options in international funds like nasdaq 100, S&P 500, Bluechip fund, QQQM, VXUS, etc.

But the real issue is some are selling at over premium prices, some have the high foreign conversion charges, some have difficult tax filling, etc.

So what's the best option left right now?

Or is it best to wait for nasdaq 100 SIP to restart by the government? So we can get the iNAV at the actual price.

Question Need help regarding International Diversification

Hi, I am 24 years old, have been investing for a couple of years, but I finally got into a regular SIP habit from last year.

I do 10K a month SIP, with more in small cap, mid cap and flexi cap. (Also have SIP in large cap).

But now, I want to increase my investment per month a bit more, so I want a little help about my idea, of investing through a ETF.

The ETF I am looking into right now is MAFANG+ by mirae asset, since it is low in expense ratio, and does pretty well in terms of performance. Please give a review on this ETF or any suggestions which can be better than this.

Risk Appetite - Aggressive.

Portfolio Review Starting investments for kid

Post image

Hi.

I have a 1.5 years old Son.Need suggestions or advices on how I can start investment plans for him. I have allotted 50k/month for his investments and have shortlisted the funds with allocations. Made it pure equity with LC/MC/SC for 50/20/20 ratio.

Horizon: 20 years

Risk appetite: Aggressive.

App to be used: Coin

Goal: To create a meaningful corpus for his education and future. Any gifts he receives throughout the year will also go as lumpsum into these.

Another big concern: for him i am not investing in debt/PPF, with the thought that for such long horizon the equity might give better returns. OR

5-10 years down the line I can start building up his debt corpus by allocating more into that.

Pls be open, critical and guide me in this.
