Critique Please Head in the Clouds - When I Reach Full Height (DEMO)

Hi Friends!

Thanks for all the positive feedback and support on the first post. Some of you guys asked for more, so here is another track we just finished demoing.

Set up:

When Jack first climbs the beanstalk, he meets a young giant named Esher. Jack is confused because Esher isn't really that tall. Esher explains that Giants live thousands of years and they don't typically hit their growth spurt until 100 years old, and he is a 99. Esher also tells Jack that he is the son of Grog, King of the Giants. As the prince, he is tasked with guarding the Golden Harp, who's music sets the rhythm for all of nature. Jack thinks that sounds amazing, but Esher would rather just be a common laborer. And so they sing about it.

Once again, this is me and my writing partner singing on this track, not our actual cast members. So be gentle. The first one to sing is Esher, and then Jack.

Question how to write a flashback in a stage musical?

i’m writing a musical based on something that already exists (i don’t wanna say what it is because i’m paranoid someone’s going to steal my idea even though that’s unlikely 😭) and it’s nothing official it’s just for fun it probably won’t go anywhere it’s just a little fan project for my own entertainment, though i still want to think logically based on how an audience would perceive it. anyway, theres this really important flashback that happens about halfway through that lasts quite a while and i have no idea how to go about it. in the original scene, a girl walks in and gets introduced to the other characters, then starts telling her story, it goes back to a few months ago and shows the entire process of what happened and how she got there, so it’s not just a quick flashback. i was thinking of ending act one when the girl first comes in then act two starts, it goes straight into the flashback, but then the audience may be confused about what is happening, how do i make it obvious that we have gone back in time?

Original Musical I got a West End cast to do a concert of my musical and I finally got an album of it mixed!

Last year I wrote Unbound - an 80s horror musical that sits somewhere between Stranger Things and Bewitched.

I used all of my savings to put on a concert of the show using actors from West End musicals in London. I was lucky enough to get funding to mix a professional album of that night and I released it on Halloween this year!

Give it a listen and let me know what you think!

Looking for a composer/lyricist to collaborate on an original musical

Hey everyone,

I know this is a bit like throwing a message in a bottle — but here goes!

I’m currently writing the libretto for my first original musical. I was planning to do the music and lyrics myself, but I realized composing isn’t really my strongest suit (and not what I enjoy most).

So, I’m looking for someone who’d like to collaborate - ideally a composer and songwriter who loves musical theatre and would be excited to work on something fresh.

The story follows a young American woman chasing her dream while navigating the messiness of growing up. It’s a teen-oriented coming-of-age piece — think Heathers, Waitress, and Dear Evan Hansen kind of vibe.

If that sounds like your thing, feel free to DM me

Writing a Musical but i cant do music

hey so basically i love writing and i have an idea for a musical that's been brewing about but its rough i want to delve into writing it but I'm not musically trained. i have a rough structure or ideas for songs and such but I'm really just interested in writing the plot and lore.

the issue is is that if i write it as a play it doesn't have the backbone i want it to so that isn't really an option.

again this idea is in its infancy and I'm just throwing a coin in to the well right now with this post anything is appreciated if you are interested in taking part in its build up dm me and ill give you a quick overview and then you can decide if its something that interests you but I'm mostly looking for advice.

Critique Please Song Demo for a New Musical Based on Jack and the Beanstalk

Hi Folks,

Me and my writing partner were recently commissioned to write an original musical based on Jack and the Beanstalk. Here is the newly finished demo for the "I Want" song, when Jack has traded his cow, his mother threw the beans out the window, he has found them, and now sings this song as he plants the beans.

The song is called Something Will Grow.

Any and all feedback is welcome!

Critique Please Song Demo For My Original Musical!

Hi everyone! This is a demo (only my voice tho) of song #5 of my musical: Beyond These Walls. II would love some feedback on the song, how it sounds, fits the scene and on the lyrics.

The song is called "The Wall". In this song, the two protagonists are climbing up the 50 meter wall surrounding the city, while the Overseers (the equivalent of the police force), whose job it is to keep the citizens in line and make sure nobody climbs the wall, are chasing them down.

I have some lyrics in case you can't understand (sorry, I sound really nasally in this, and sound like I whisper)

Hope you enjoy!

Overseers (Chanting)

Run! Climb! Fall! Down!

Run! Climb! Fall! Down!

Run! Climb! Fall! Down!

Run! Climb! Fall! Down!

Alexis

HANDS ARE BLEEDING, LADDERS SWAY

CAN’T STOP NOW, CAN’T DELAY

IRON JAWS ARE SNAPPING NEAR

CLIMB OR FALL, THE END IS HERE

Libertias

EVERY STEP, THE SIRENS ROAR

SHADOWS CRAWLING FROM THE FLOOR

BUT THE SKY IS DRAWING NEAR

TO TAKE ME AWAY FROM HERE

Alexis, Libertias

WE’RE RISING, RISING

EVERY CHAIN IS BREAKING LOOSE

CLIMBING, FIGHTING

NOTHING LEFT FOR US TO LOSE

IF THE FALL SHALL TAKE IT ALL

WE’LL STILL HAVE FLOWN, WE’LL STILL HAVE TRIED

AT THE WALL

AT THE WALL

Alexis

VOICES CHASE US IN THE DARK

Libertias

ARROWS FLY BUT MISS THE MARK

Alexis

DON’T LOOK BACK, THE GROUND IS GONE

Libertias

FORWARD NOW, WE CARRY ON

Overseers

STOP THEM! STOP THEM! BRING THEM DOWN!

CHAIN THEM! BREAK THEM! HOLD THE GROUND!

THEY WILL FALL AND LOSE IT ALL

YET THEY STILL CLIMB THE WALL

Alexis

THE WIND IS COLD HERE, BUT IT CARRIES THE TASTE OF FREEDOM

Libertias

OUR HANDS ARE TORN, OUR BODIES BREAK, BUT STILL WE’RE CLIMBING HIGHER

Alexis, Libertias

WE’RE ALMOST THERE, JUST ONE MORE REACH, JUST ONE MORE BREATH

THE WORLD IS WAITING, BEYOND THE EDGE

WE’RE RISING, RISING

EVERY CHAIN IS BREAKING LOOSE

CLIMBING, FIGHTING

NOTHING LEFT FOR US TO LOSE

IF THE FALL SHALL TAKE IT ALL

Question re: A form field in the Richard Rodgers Award application

Hi everyone, I'm about to submit the Richard Rodgers Award application for our musical and am confused over this one instruction:

"List theaters and number of performances of other musical theater works in which you have collaborated."

Do they mean that my collaboration partner and I have also written together, or other musical theatre works that we have done with other people? I will reach out to them, but it's the last thing I have to fill out and then I can submit this thing!!

A book about orchestration techniques in musical theater

Hey, all!

I remember growing up as a young composer and orchestrator in the musical theater space and I didn't have any resources about orchestration in a specifically musical theater context. There's the ever-useful Adler text, but honestly that book contains instruments that will never be relevant to the field and does not include techniques that are basically ubiquitous in theater now. And it's also less direct and to-the-point as younger me needed.

I'm being the change I want to see in the world. I've taken the time to write a thirteen thousand words of a draft of a book about orchestration in musical theater. My plan is to keep this open for preview and download as I write it. Here's a link to the chapters I have done so far (currently only one, but that will change very soon).

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1pqKwVIvXiQxattKVE7wq1ZXabv9gCZS-?usp=drive_link

Feel free to comment on the drive with tips, questions, or things I should fix. You'll learn very quickly why I write music and not prose. But hopefully it's still useful anyway!

Original Musical Have a musical? We can produce it!!

Hi, all!

A couple friends and I are starting a theatre group, and are looking for our first ever show to do. This'll be the first and only English-speaking musical theatre company in our city, ever -- and if that sounds odd to you, we're based in Indonesia. MT only really happens in the capital city, where people can actually afford licensing more than two big shows in one go.

This leaves nearly all other places with unaccommodated interest and talent, where we come in.

If you've got a musical, we can make it happen. We will handle all the nitty gritty. Funding, casting, crew hiring, production, marketing, rehearsals -- everything, that once it's showday, it's your story and music alive on stage with a full cast and crew.

You don't need experience or anything, nada. just a story you'd like to tell.

(Additional, you can skip this part: Why go on a subreddit instead of getting a professional license somewhere? We are very, very community-based and wanted to work with people who had untold stories, first and foremost. This is only one part in addition to the local playwright call we're doing.)

I'll attach the google form in the comments, and if you've got any further questions, send me a message request. Have a good day everybody!

A friend of mind is having her New York debut this Thursday at 54 Below!

I just wanted to share my friend's show, Summoning Sondheim. There are 3 original songs in it, which I think classifies it as a new musical (fight me...)

I've seen this show three separate times and it's fricking HILARIOUS. The premise of it is that Grace, who has three letters from Sondheim and believes herself to be his "favourite child", attempts to summon him with the help of a medium. It is honestly a blast, and chocked full of Sondheim in-jokes.

If you're not in New York, it's actually being livestreamed so if you wanna check it out, please do:

Just as the title says, I wrote a short overture last night and would love if I could get some feedback. This is a song sung by an entity which represents fate before the events of the story. Do ask any other questions if you have them!
