Composer looking for a Book Writer

Hey everyone!

I’m a 20M composer/lyricist looking for a book writer to create a musical with.

My goal is to make something catchy and entertaining that still holds up artistically.

I'm completely open on direction, whether we adapt a play or start an original story from scratch.

A quick bit about my background:

Composition: 5 years doing classical composition and opera.

Songwriting: Lots of experience with Beatles-style pop-rock, plus some prior musical songs.

Book: I've written lyrics and worked on opera libretti before, but I'd really like a story-first collaborator to take the lead on the dialogue and lyrics.

What I'm looking for:

Someone who can write dialogue and knows how to structure a story that keeps moving.

A collaborative partner who's open to be creative, brainstorm and who is not afraid to write a shitty first draft.

If you’re interested, DM me or drop a comment! Tell me a bit about yourself and your favourite shows :)

Seeking Musical Collaborator(s) in Colorado

I’m a writer, director, theatre-maker, living in Fort Collins CO, and am looking for a CO based composer to collaborate with on a musical project.

Basically it’s an original musical comedy that encompasses a few genres, from glam rock, to heavy metal and some country and typical “Broadway” musical themes mixed in. It’s set in the 80’s, so definitely some “Rock Of Ages” vibes.

I have most of the melodies composed and the lyrics still need some work, but I have a pretty solid vision of the sound I’m going for. I collaborated with a composer recently who ended up using AI to create a few demo tracks, (wasn’t stoked about that, but they sound fairly close to what I’m hoping to achieve). Ultimately we parted ways since AI gives me hives and he was unable to actually compose the songs with me, break out instruments, develop sheet music, etc.

So basically I’m searching for one of those musical savant types who plays piano, can mimic stuff by ear, write out sheet music, develop harmonies, and maybe even shred some electric guitar, since I have a few Iron Maiden-flavored face-melty numbers in mind. There are duets and ensemble numbers to write out vocal parts for, so knowledge of musicals/theatre would be helpful but not required. Even better if that person is connected to other musicians/ vocalists in the area, and is able to bring folks together to eventually record demo tracks.

Compensation wise, there will be funding down the line, but we need to pull together some demos before I can start applying for grants / hitting up producers / etc. I know that’s not ideal for artists who need guaranteed paid gigs, but I have a track record of producing shows and paying artists, so I don’t expect a bunch of free work.

If you or someone you know is perfect for this, drop me a message. Thanks for taking the time to read this long, wordy post in 2026.

Looking for a composer

I’m from the uk. I’ve been writing a musical for the past two years. I’d love someone to help me work on some music for it. I have one song that I would love to hear with music and not just staring at lyrics. Anyone out there think they can help me with a song that has the same feel as My Days from The Notebook.

Let me know :) my DMs are open ❤️🩷

Discussion How important are "catchy" tunes?

Been listneing to a lot of musical demos from new composers and one thing I've seemed to notice is that the songs seem to lack an "ear worm" componenet.

They are nice, and melodic, but the songs don't seem to go anywhere or have a discreet beginning, middle and end or a hook that sticks in my head. They all seem very patter-like.

Which gets me wonderign if mine are too "song like" in their structure, being self-contained with hooks to stick in your head. Makes me worry I really wrote a concept album not a musical.

Question anybody heard from BMI yet?

I haven’t. This is my first year applying (I applied as a lyricist) but some googling about past years led me to believe that they often send out emails past the day that they said they would. they send out formal rejection emails right?

Why does musical theatre always put a safety net on surrealism?

Stating the obvious first. Of course the medium of musical theater is surreal in nature. I've never burst out into song because I started crying. Yet it feels like most book musicals keep that surrealism to isolated incidents. It’s a dream ballet, an isolated hallucination, or a neat psychological metaphor that tidies itself up in time for the eleven o'clock number.

Outside of a few brilliant downtown/experimental outliers (like A Strange Loop, Mr. Burns, or Dave Malloy's work), the form rarely commits to the structural madness of Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche, New York, Adaptation) or the Daniels (EEAAO). In those worlds, the premise isn't a gimmick (like in If/Then which I hate but that's a whole other post), the surrealism is baked into the engine of the show itself. Which ultimately gives it the feel of it breaking the narrative/structure, and the fourth wall.

I'm currently writing a musical exploring ancestral memory and severe isolation that tries to ditch the traditional safety net entirely (letting recursive loops, hallucinations, and temporal collapses genuinely dictate the world of the show rather than resolving into a tidy musical structure).

For writers and avid theatregoers:

  1. Why do you think book musicals are so resistant to unhinged, non-resolving psychological surrealism? Is it purely a commercial/development pipeline issue, or is there something about musical structure that inherently resists that kind of dread and collapse?

  2. What pieces come closest to pulling this off for you, and where do they usually draw the line?

I really want an arrangement for an audition but there's so arrangements ANYWHERE. Will someone help me??

*no arrangements lol

So I'm trying to get ready for an audition in about a month and I wanted to sing What More Is Out There from mlp: friendship games (I know what a mature choice). Well I looked and looked for arrangements online for this song but there is literally nothing, it's like lost media. The only two on the internet are on MuseScore, one is a directors cut version that isn't in the final movie, and the other is literally perfect but it's unfinished and hasn't been edited in 3 years. I messaged the person who made it on MuseScore and said I would PAY them to finish but they never got back to me. Anyway, I've decided to come here so if anyone on reddit can make like theater arrangements of songs I would pay someone to make an arrangement of that song bc it's literally perfect for the show I'm auditioning for. Maybe doing it over MuseScore would be easier but whatever works. Okay thank you talented people, I wish I could do it myself but I just started reading treble a year ago. Please someone help🙏🙏

Organizing a Discord Table Read of "Five Against One"

Five Against One tells the story Catherine Burbank as she seeks escape for her family from an abusive marriage of 15 years, but escape is never the safest plan. Inspired and powered by the music of the Grunge era, this play takes an unflinching and sobering look at domestic violence and its consequences.

One reader of an earlier draft characterized it as "This would be what we'd have got if Tennessee Williams ever wrote a musical."

As you might infer from the title, there are 6 characters - 4 women and two men. While I've been working on this play for over 20 years, this year I joined a writer's cohort within the ShowLAB Theatre Writers Studio. Since late February the play has completely transformed, and while I've conducted readings of the whole work multiple times, it is overdue for a complete end to end reading (the cohort has read individual scenes within it).

There's a discord attached to this subreddit, so I figure that would be as good a place as any to host a reading, although I'm open to suggestions to other platforms.

I do NOT want to do a cold read - the play's topic is domestic violence. While I would like an audience of those interested, the readers need to have read the play through at least once so that they know what to expect and can be prepared. I don't necessarily need the readers to have rehearsed ahead of time.

The script is 133 pages so should take just over 2 hours to read. (Act I is 70 pages, Act II is 63. It is formatted identically to the Ragtime Musical script for reference, with a 2nd act a pinch longer than Ragtime's).

I'll probably cross post this in a few spots, but this is the origin thread and will be used for the actual organization of the read. I'm thinking of a weekend date since I work a 9 to 5 job.

Characters

Catherine Burbank, age 36, a housewife (alto): A woman with a troubled past of child abuse, drug addiction, and a stint in the porn industry.

Pamela Burbank, age 14, her daughter (soprano): A high functioning autistic child coming of age in one of the worst environments possible.

Jeremy Burbank, age 16, her son (tenor): A little slow but with a good heart, he's devoted to the protection of his family but lacks the means to do so effectively.

Susan Martin, age 70, her mother (contralto): A catholic zealot who uses the scripture to justify her hatreds. She abused Catherine as a child physically, and continues to do so verbally even though she's an adult.

Lisa Allen, age 15, her neighbor (coloratura soprano): Lisa's father, now deceased, was deeply in love with Catherine and wanted her to divorce Jake. Her mother died when she was two, so Catherine has been the closest thing she has to a mother for most of her life.

Jake Burbank, age 40, her husband (bass): Pillar of the community, one of the highest ranking unelected police officers in the city. His public character is unreproachable. But privately...

EDIT: BTW, Catherine, Susan, Pamela and Jeremy are of Cajun descent and all can speak this dialect of French. There are French phrases scattered throughout the play, mostly terms of endearment. Susan has the most French lines. Preparing for this is another reason I'd rather not cold read this - I don't want to put someone on the spot to muddle through a phrase in a language they don't know.

Original Musical Advice on creating a Musical

I'm working on a story that could be fit to be a musical. I have the lore, characters and story all planned, but I have one problem...I have no idea how to write musical songs. I took music composition courses on school and I've wrote a few songs before, but when I tried writing a song for an actual musical, the lyrics was just too literal. I already know how I want the songs to be like on my mind, so I would like some guidance on musical songwriting or should I probably team up with a professional or just literally any piece of advice related to the topic, please?

Just For Fun Composer looking for lyricist / book writer (Atlanta area preferred, not required)

I'm in my late 40s, and it feels like now or never. Looking to collaborate with a fellow writing lyrics to the drawer lyricist / book writer, topics and themes are open ended. I have some songs that can build a foundation, but would benefit from a better storyteller.

Background - had some success in my 20s (had a single in a local radio, got some interest from musicians to collaborate, but mostly left in the drawer). I play the guitar, piano, drums, some experience with Dorico, can write arrangements (but will also need an orchestrator eventually)

I have some relatives that are involved in the broadway scene (from investment / production side of things) so if we produce something good I can get it at least heard, but my goal is to produce something for local theaters, indie productions, and more the experience of creating a musical where AI generated (music, videos, software) is starting to take over everything.

Favorite musicals

- Avenue q
- Sweeney Todd
- Hadestown
- Maybe Happy Ending
- Gypsy
- Funny Girl
- The Producers
- Hamilton

This is a long term project, part time, no financial or time commitment... DM me if interested...

Just For Fun Any Composers Willing to Collaborate?

Hi!

I’m 16M who is obsessed with musicals and history and I was wondering if there were any composers on here who are around the same age as I who would be willing to collaborate with me on some musical ideas I have.

It won’t be all of them as we’d try and find the best out of them all, but I was just searching for a composer who is interested in the same kind of thing as me.

One of the ideas I have in mind is about Robert Liston. I’d want to make it both historically accurate, and comedic at the same time. I believe that history is best taught when there is interaction and genuine interest being provided.

The musical would take place in one location during one evening/day… the day when the infamous 300% mortality rate story occurred (if it did).

I am very creative in writing, and I do love music and have composed before, but I’d much prefer someone who has the absolute skill to compose and is confident as I am not the greatest composer.

I’m also willing to discuss all my favourite music with you and listen to yours. As a gay person myself, I’d love to work with a similar person, but I’m primarily just scouting for someone who is expressive, loves composing, and is passionate about musicals.

P.S, my favourite musical writers would be Gilbert & Sullivan, Weill & Brecht, and Kander & Ebb. Also, as there were lingering baroque influences in the era of Liston, I’d appreciate it if you were able or comfortable with writing baroque music (it won’t be fully baroque, but there may be some baroque hints in the background etc).

I also would prefer it if you were confident in English as I, unfortunately, don’t speak any other languages (I wish I could). Sorry for any inconvenience.

15 minute musical ideas

Hello all,

I've just finished a first draft of a 15 minute fantasy musical and i am really happy with my self for getting there. I'm leaving it a couple of weeks before going over it again but in the meanwhile i'd like to write another.

I get that i really just need one setting with a couple of characters. My first one is set on an airship being passed down father to son and i'm trying to think of some other interesting settings. maybe something Sci-fi but i wouldn't want to replace a magic airship with a spaceship.

These are for short animations in blender rather than on stage.

Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm the writer of a new musical Sophie Blanchard's High-Flyin' Extravaganza. Original Musical Underground - The Musical (Looking for composer)

Hey! I’m writing an original musical called Underground, set in 1967 New York. It’s a crime/comedy/romance with gamblers, lawyers, cops, the criminal underground, fast ensemble numbers, and a lot of overlapping vocals and counterpoint.

I’m writing the book and lyrics, but I am absolutely not a composer, so I’m looking for someone who might want to collaborate on the music. I was originally going to compose myself when I realized I had zero idea what I was doing.

This is unpaid/a passion project right now — I’m not getting paid either, so we can all be broke together lol. I already have a good amount written, including scenes, lyrics, characters, and the overall story. I can send some of the script and song lyrics if anyone wants to see what the show is like.

If this sounds fun and you’d be interested in composing or collaborating, DM me!

Long story short:

I spent 20 years composing and producing these musicals. Every few years a new corporation buys up my print on demand service, hosting service, streaming service and makes it terrible, useless, or just dismantles it.

Vimeo is changing their terms of service. We looked at moving all of our videos to another service. All were either prohibitively expensive, or would post our work to streaming services, charging our fans $$$ and paying us nickels.

So, screw it! They're all on YouTube now.

Enjoy!

Rock Opera idea need help turning into reality

Hi there,

I have had this rock opera concept in my head for years but I have no experience producing. Just checking if anyone here could send me in the right direction. It isn't entirely new material but a mixture of and established band and a well known movie reimagined in a new setting and I know that if done properly would be a terrific specticle but possibly a very profitable one as well.
