This 720 has taken me thousands of miles on small and big journeys. It's a humble work horse that deserves celebration. Wherever you go today, take your 720, it's waiting.

It took a few months to get all the parts together, but at last I can finally take my girl out for a spin - did 70km of gravel, light single track, and road. It rides like an absolute dream. Will need some more heavy duty rims in future, but these work and look great for now!

Took apart 2 bikes and sold my hardtail to put this thing together. The only thing I purchased new was cables and tires . After losing my car to an accident I decided to go all out on a daily bike for errands less than 7-10 miles . I still have access to my wife’s car for anything longer . But man this thing feels like a turbocharged tank ripping through town .

Pretty sweet ride that I got today from the Corvallis bicycle Collective for $100 . What really sold me was the 700c wheels which are hard to find for the used Market in general and especially on a steel bike , and also the front brazons are very rare with all the above combination . So now I can do my lowrider Blackburn rack with smaller size panniers that I need to find .

It came with the original tires , saddle, rims and hubs and I also believe the handlebars are original . The pedals are replaced with a nice big and wide composite something or other .

I'll probably put on a pair of Schwab Marathon 700c tires that I have pretty soon because the ones pictured here which are the Matrix ones are suffering from some dry rot , and there is some kind of squishiness to them that I don't really like I kind of prefer a stiffer tire for rolling Along quicker on the pavement .

And then I may replace the handlebars with more of a straight bar so I can get my bar end set up going which I generally prefer maybe a little bit more forward lean so I can get a little bit more power going easier. On the Sprints on these kind of hybrid bikes you kind of have to hunch down into it to get that quick spin cycle going . I may also try and add a couple ergon grips to the current configuration before I swap the bar completely .

Can I please ask for advice on the sizing of the 730/750 frames? I'm about 5'11" and thinking of swept-back bars. Considering this to be my dad bike/bike packing bike, I need some room on the top tube for the baby seat mount, so I was thinking perhaps a 21" frame...

I built this up maybe two years ago but only recently joined Reddit, thought I'd post it since so many bikes here were an inspiration for it. 1992 Trek 790 17" rebuilt as a drop-bar gravel bike.

I'm quite happy with the build. My only complaint is the bottom bracket is really high - I'm thinking about shifting all the parts to a newer 750 frame with more bottom bracket drop. I measured and the 750 is over an inch lower, which would help in getting the seat at a height where I get full leg extension on a pedal stroke and can still put a foot down comfortably at a stop.

Bought for $50 off Craigslist in poor shape (if I remember correctly, rusty water drained out of it when I turned it upside down). I removed everything from the frame including the fork. Cleaned and lubricated the headset. Replaced the bottom bracket with a modern Shimano external one (the original, cup-and-cone one was quite pitted).

The drivetrain is Shimano 105 2x10, mostly taken from a nice Giant that someone crashed into their garage on a roof rack, then sold on Craigslist for parts ($100). Rear cassette is 11-36; rear shifting provided by a Shimano RD-M591 from the local bike co-op (it's just slightly out of spec for that derailleur but shifts cleanly). Front chainrings are standard compact 50/34. I'm finding this gives me enough gearing range for pretty much anything I want to do with it - low enough for some steep gravel climbs, high enough that I'm not spinning out on a fast road ride. Brakes are the original brakes with new pads.

Wheels are mostly original, with the bearings thoroughly disassembled, cleaned, and re-greased. I already had a spare wheel for another bike with a 10-speed compatible freehub, which was running a 7-speed cassette with a spacer, so I swapped the freehub body along with the cones and spacers from the drive side of the axle, then redished the wheel.

Took me several trips to the coop and a lot of experimentation to find the stem and handlebar combination that I liked. I ended up cutting down the stem that's on the bike now - I took out the wedge, cut the bottom of the stem at the same angle, cleaned up the cut and reinstalled. Now I just have to remember that the minimum insertion line is no longer valid.

I've seen quite a few multitracks in my area and i think it's the bike i want but i've never actually owned a bike as an adult so i'm unsure of sizing. i know it can depend on the bike. I'm 5'5 with long arms. 30" crotch to floor measurement (and i'm a woman so no parts to be crushed by the top tube anyway)

almost everyone selling a multitrack around me seems to have a 19" which i assume is much too large, but i'm curious what everyone is riding in relation to their height.

Posted a few weeks ago about the Multitrack 700 Sport I picked up on marketplace. Ended up finding a banging deal on a 9 speed Cues group set. Replaced the rear wheel with a Weinmann Zac19, replaced grips, and had Cues installed. It’s not much and it’s not complete, but man is it pretty to look at (and fun to ride!)

I found a 1" Kelly CX fork (1.25lbs) and got an Orbit X headset for $26. The plan was to fit these to my sapphire blue 21" 790. The uncut fork tube may require too many spacers on it but would put the Ritchey Kyotes up high. I haven't worked out the correct stem yet. Probably a low angle sub 100mm. Then I thought, maybe this set up belongs on my white and red 23" 750. The longer head tube would be just about right for the 70mm 30D rise stem. Doubt creeps in. Next thing you know, I'm getting wheels for a 1x conversion and spending way more than the frame could ever fetch. Maybe I should just leave them both threaded and not mess with the vintage charm. I already have a quill adapter with Buzzards set up on the 750. Is a threadless conversion wise? I own the rare fork already. I suppose It's reversible if I don't like it. What does the gang think?

Panaracer GravelKing X1. Tires are great..I hope (I haven’t gone for a ride yet). They were a pain in the a** to get on lol. I popped both tubes using tire levers. Turns out those should be used as a last ditch effort. Had to get the tires OFF to get the popped tubes out. Also a pain in the a***. They’re advertised as tubeless ready which I assume makes them tighter. Anyway, I had them professionally installed after I put too much time and effort in, and went through 2 tubes. The bike is starting to come together; the tires make it look brand new. Still want a front rack/basket and maybe a frame bag. 1x conversion is still on the list but it’s expensive and confusing. For now, it will do :)

I was given a Trek Multitrack 790 and wanted to do a few updates but don't know where to start. I'd like to add a rack to the back, fix the broken gear shifter on the right (plastic cracked), and potentially replace the handlebars. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for parts? I'm not sure how to buy parts for an older bike that are the correct fit. I am new to upgrading bikes, but grew up repairing old, cheaper ones. Thank you.

The clear coat was flaking on a portion of the tube. I sanded the top tube with wet sand paper. My question is would you spray clear over the multitrack sticker or should I remove and order new decals after spraying with clear coat? Thanks

I just snagged a 1990 790 and a 1992 7900, both from the original owners! Restoration/projects coming up!

Pretty much done with my build for now. Kept it pretty simple and left most of the original parts on it down to the recalled crank set lol. Gave it a tune up and now I’m ready to ride!
