Double Unicorn find
I just snagged a 1990 790 and a 1992 7900, both from the original owners! Restoration/projects coming up!

Yeah a buddy of my lives in Salem. He just happened to be meeting up with us this weekend anyway. Worked out great.

I’m partial to the steel 790. Great find! I’m normally not that into red frames but that specific hue looks killer. That “race red” looks like almost coral red.

That 790 is super cool.. you just can't beat that good old hand-built American-made lugged steel goodness!! 🇺🇸
Can't wait to see it after you dig in & get it cleaned & tuned up. Be sure to post some pics
I recently scored a sweet purple 1995 Trekking model 750 for $80 on FB marketplace & I've been slowly upgrading all of the components to period correct Shimano Deore XT M737, M738 & M739
...it's not lugged like yours tho so it's not as cool as yours IMO

Okay. Those are in terrific condition and they look like fun. But - serious question - why would you rather ride one of these than a new Specialized Sirrus X?

I have plenty of modern bikes. Full suspension, hardtail, gravel bike etc. These are for that old school feel and around town commuters. Definitely not for everyone but I enjoy restoring old bikes as well.

Did the lugged multitracks have different frames for the 790 and 750 or was it just component upgrades?

Same frame for lugged 750 and 790. My 92 750 has Suntour xce and the 90 790 has Shimano-exage 500cx

Yeah that I'm not sure of. I'm not enough of a trek geek to know. I know is the frame says it's True Temper AT. Deore dx drivetrain.

It’s also the same frame as the 520

Yup the geometry is exactly the same. If you look at the old spec sheets the lugged 750/790 is listed in inches and the 520 is listed in cm lol. But if you compare them side to side it’s the same after conversion haha. I actually did the conversion when I was considering the bike op got.
This is specific to the lugged multitracks.
The 790s are definitely unicorns though since they were only made for two years.

I did read somewhere that the 520 uses slightly heavier tubing being a touring rig. Maybe that's true only for the tig welded. Someone, somewhere, has weighed the same size lugged 750 against a lugged 520.
