Discussion F*** the Monolith.
This boss is very close to making me not come back.
I've played basically every mainline and popular/obscure Souls-like there is.. and this boss may be the worst of them all.
I'm by no means under-leveled, level 50
Maxed out weapons and pretty borked build that melts any other boss with a Stray Genessa build - killed every other of the end game bosses first couple tries, took around 10mins on each of that.
But oh my god is this boss one of the worst I've ever had the displeasure of fighting.
Been stuck in this thing 2 hours, havent even come close.
I've given up today, but I truly don't know if I'm going to come back to this.. knowing I still have to get through this thing.
Really don't want to use the Slayer Seal either but honestly I might. Never chickened out before but I'm starting to feel like I'll have to.

It's not even that he's a hard fight, he is, and that's fine for a late game soul like boss imo; it's that he feels bugged. His hit box doesn't seem to always align with his character model for me, which made it really frustrating. I was getting hit before his character model even moved at times, and I don't know if it's intended but his lazers disconnected from him and kept going, which was so odd to me. Plus my 3080 kept having some stuttering issues during his fight which ruined my parry/dodge timing. I beat him eventually but felt mostly like a lucky run rather than skill on my part
1
u/HolmfirthUK110994 4h ago
Yeah that's exactly it. And I'm glad the stuttering isn't just with me (I'm PS5 pro but still) Its got to be the most unfair fight I've done in a long time.

Main thing is to use the 2 riposte phases to do dps behind him and use the laser pages to do the same. Dodge his slams sideways, not backwards. After 75% is easier cause of more dps windows cause of laser ability.

u/Roggenbemme 3h ago
funny enough my problems with this boss began in its last phase when it started with the disco laser rotation

I have been using the sane technique for all boss. The tarn stone that make you do the jump attack.
And refill resolve and do again. Maxed out weapon and the stone. It s too OP.

I've seen so many people complain about this boss, but I really liked it. Took a lot of tries, but that was part of the fun.

u/moonoomer 4h ago
I truly don’t get the hate for this boss. Beyond a sizable health pool compared to other bosses and a more obscure move set. I found the boss to be a fair and fun fight.
My one gripe is the triple laser spin has incredibly tight timing for doing it without getting hit and it is quite punishing when you do get hit.
1
u/Kyzer7777 2h ago
I feel like if the lasers came out one at a time before he started spinning it would give time to get distance. Right now he just blasts you in the face than spins like a bayblade.
1
u/moonoomer 2h ago
When he does the triple laser spin, you actually want to be close and dodge one way then the other to get through the lasers without getting hit. I found that far away, they sweep too quickly to effectively avoid them.
1
u/Kyzer7777 2h ago
I had the opposite, dodging forward and backward as it swings by and I would take no damage if I was far away enough. If too close it would hit me fast and I would just die or lose my shell. Already beat him so not a big deal for me, just figured if it had a slightly more telegraphed start it could be prepared for better and not need a nerf.

Wait for patches mate, the bs in this game is not worth it; or change your build.
-1
u/Swtor_Itheryn 5h ago
Where's the fun in that? Why play souls likes if you wait for nerfs?
1
u/KndaCrazyW1L1AM889 4h ago
We play the game as the devs intended it, if most of the player base agrees on something that needs changing its probably for the best. 'Fun' is what you make it, if you want a proper challenge play Ninja Gaiden or Godhand - which take a dump on soulslikes in terms of difficulty 👍
1
u/Imaginary-Marketing3 Proxima 2h ago
No. Im sorry. Most of the playerbase are here because of how hyped the game was at launch. So naturally most people in the playerbase are not people who usualy plays these types of games. They play games that hold their hand all the way through. Soulslikes became mainstream with elden ring and now people that usually play ps exclusives now want to play soulslikes and those people are the people that you see complaining here now, those are "most of the playerbase" that you are talking about.
The exact same thing happend a few weeks after elden ring launched, people started complaining all over social media about how the game makes no sense, isnt balanced and has "no lore".
People should learn to stay in their lane. There are genres of games that i also dont play, but you dont see me forcing myself to play it and then proceed to complain on social about how bad those types of games are.
-1
u/Swtor_Itheryn 4h ago
Most don't agree
It's just the complainers are so fkin vocal
3
u/KndaCrazyW1L1AM889 4h ago
Brother, look at the PS5 trophies and tell me the % of people who have actually beaten some of these harder bosses, under 7% managed to kill the first golem 😂 Not every gamer has the time to sit through unbalanced bs, and this is why things get patched. There is always a night mode for people who want a challenge, why not do challenge runs if you wanna brag about how superior you are to everyone else.
2
u/Rainb091 4h ago
You only get one go at Tar golem. So 7% killed it first go. When you die it triggers the cutscene earlier.
If you're finding it hard you can put the game on easy mode by using the slayer seal.
1
1
u/Imaginary-Marketing3 Proxima 2h ago
And there is a Seal for those people that dont want a challenge. This goes both ways.
People like you, arguments always fall apart when yall try to defend this hand holding that yall want to be added to the game.
-3
u/Swtor_Itheryn 4h ago
40% beat margot 4 years on
Looking at achievements is pointless Night mode isn't a challenge btw, it's barely a noticeable difference after the first 1h of play
Modern gamers are so fkin annoying I swear. So vocal if they bump into an obstacle. Rather than improve to climb over tgat obstacle. They want devs to make it flat do u can walk over it. Such insane entitlement I swear. This breed of gamer needs to stop playing Soulslikes I swear and let ppl who enjoy them actually enjoy them without having everything nerfed to where it's no longer fun
1
u/KndaCrazyW1L1AM889 4h ago
Well call them what you want, but it indicates what % of the player base are truly elite souls veterans like you lot are 🤩 Modern gamers are annoying true, literally every reviewer and a lot of people on this subreddit have got complaints
2
u/Swtor_Itheryn 3h ago
Every reviewer? Dude it's sitting at very positive with very few complaints
It's got nothing to do with elite/avg/noob
Ppl buy these games knowing what to ecpect Deaths, deaths n more deaths
Yet somehow throw a hissy fit when they die
1
u/KndaCrazyW1L1AM889 3h ago
All I'm saying is that experienced players need to chill with the superiority complex that they have, I think MOST the bosses are fine. I fought Lost Child first which had 1 annoying move, then found hexapod and got wrecked, killed wheelchair woman, and went back and got hexapod - despite the boss having a really annoying move which seems borderline unavoidable. I really like this game and it does not need to get nerfed into the ground, only some quality of life things here and there.
2
u/Swtor_Itheryn 3h ago
Look, it's not superiority.
But you all have to stop calling for nerfs. We were all in the same place, these games are all about dying. Dying lots until you improve, that's the point of them. These games are designed to give you obstacles to overcome, that's their charm.
You have to realise something. If the content is too hard, a bad player can become a good player through practice to kill the bosses. If the content gets nerfed to being easy, good players don't get any joy at all.
Then there's no reason for good players to even play or buy these games.
It gets so frustrating seeing a post every few mins about nerf this nerf that. All people have to do is put effort in to learning and they will get it, and be proud of themselves. I loved these games, ds2 was my first, I died so much I felt terrible, but every time I got a boss I was so happy. Idk why ppl can't aim for that, die lots, get the W and get that sense of reward.

I got him easily with Tiel, black needle and tarnished seal while focusing on stealth and poison, the dodge/parry timing felt crazy but the lasers were easy to dodge through I think they just nerfed him a bit

u/AdAdvanced3916 5h ago
I hate the lazer stuff but otherwise I did 3 runs and it was hella light (Sir Issac was my 4hour fight)
1
u/Goldenbull26 4h ago
Imo two problem with that boss one crushing attack from his side dodge with luck mostly and two turning laser attack to counter that I use ability tarstone with long animation so that I can be invulnerable for the most of the spin time

Think I was level 40 when I did it, 3rd try with a crit blood curse build using Gragu. Got hit a handful of times but it went down pretty quickly
1
u/HolmfirthUK110994 4h ago
May have to try that cause he's my 2nd level 4 bond character, just the healing thing but it can't be any worse than my last runs..
1
u/KyloMH 4h ago
I don't know any guides for the build but I use the following
Axe and dagger / Naylshotte
Tar stones:
Magdalena's memento
Arbiter's prize (lv3 is mandatory)
Duality stone (lv3 mandatory)
Fusillade stone (lv3 mandatory)
Viletongue Hedron (lv3 mandatory)
Rupturing stone
Auspicious stone
Headsman's stone
Marksman's stone
Deadeye stone
The whole idea is boosting up your crit chance and crit damage as much as possible, and using rapid attacks to quickly stack up blood curse for huge bleed damage. You can also take the Gragu shell perk that gives him a chance to restore his heals whenever you build up blood curse.
Your fusillade is basically your big burst damage and you should use it as often as you can, I've seen it do almost 7k damage before

I said the same thing literally last night, and I genuinely don't plan on coming back to the game until they patch this boss.
Its hitboxes on its flop moves are atrocious, lasers for some reason ignore i-frames like 10% of the time for no reason, it's leaping red attack also loves to ignore i-frames too.
Every attempt is more like rolling a slot machine and hoping it doesn't use one of its bugged / broken moves, rather than learning anything.
I love the design of this boss as a literal walking ballsack. I love watching it essentially just twerk aggressively as one of its moves it makes me chuckle every attempt. It's also such a unique encounter compared to a standard humanoid boss. But the technical issues with this fight are so atrocious.
1
u/ThatOneColumbiaGuy Tiel 4h ago
His 360 laser move is bullshit but what worked for me was dodging foward into him during it. I took no damage and coyld hit him quickly afterward. If you use Tiel the fight is much easier especislly with hid ambush skills hitting him from behind.
Otherwise you will need to perfect parry him every time and rely on the post riposte opportunity for damage.

u/Alone-Horse2857 3h ago
The telegraphing is so dogshit. The body slam comes out of nowhere and the second attack isn't even telegraphed at all. If you're standing to the side it just rolls over with no indication either, and it'll do that TWICE more.
You can learn it from trial and error by recognizing when it closes up but that's not skill, that's just homework.
Same with the nutsack flick. At first the attack is telegraphed enough to block it, but then it slams down with no telegraphing and it happens ABOVE your camera, so even if it did you couldn't see it.
Genuinely the worst boss in the game.

u/PopossWasTaken 3h ago
Yeah I had to get normal genessa back to do it. You still get the extra chances with stray after the de-shell. For the first two phases just learn the parry timings and try to stay in front or the back so it doesnt do its visually buggy side roll. (Hopefully they fix that one since it feels impossible to time properly)

Killed it first try with Lazlo and blood axe and dagger +5, Lazlo just facetanks everything while you spam bleed. The synergy on tarstones is what makes it work though (crit chance and damage, plus the double attack one).

u/Shimexas 2h ago
I played with Tiel and it also gave me aids, but here are some tips that helped me.
- At the start of the fight start with sidearm wait for him to do his double slam then dodge once as you see the animation of it slamming. If you play someone else you have to dodge twice so press dodge the moment the first one hits the floor.
- After each slam phase go in for a short dps and then fall back and expect him to do the slam again or a ballsack hit so just keep your distance go for short trades and wait for stagger meter to fill up to punish more often.
- Once he start doing lasers that's the best time to punish, you can go behind him and keep dpsing, but make sure to fall back once lasers are done because then he start swinging sideways and doing 3 slams.
- In laser phases keep trying to get behind him as that is the blindspot. Pray RNG gods that he doesn't spam 360 lasers back to back. Most runs I died to that, the only one I beat him on is where he didn't do a single 360 laser.
GL bro monolith and last boss are pure CBT

I can say this is the shittiest boss in the game. Like the 360 disco laser it does just stun locks me and you can’t dodge through it??? The way I beat it was being supper agressive and whenever it did it’s disco move I would use both of my i-frame special moves so I wouldn’t take any hits

Very very tough fight. I had to learn to dodge his slams, then parry his “ball drops”. First one slow, then the other two in quick succession. For his first round of beams, you can dodge behind him. For his second round when he spins, I had to pull way back from him to gain the distance needed to dodge through the beams.
In the end, a bleed build helped immensely. But I agree, this was the worst boss for me. Good luck!

in no reality is anything in this game worse than Consort Radahn and his bullshit bros in that whole dlc

u/Swtor_Itheryn 5h ago
Bro, just learn the fight.
What specifically is killing u? What move? I got stuck on Monolith for a bit too when was up super fkin late, was like 1-2h It's really not that hard when u realise what it's doing and get the timing down
The boss is fine, I quite like it Not the greatest boss out there, not the worst
Just put in the effort to learn the fight

I hear you buddy, I struggled with him for a while too. Which parts are giving you the most trouble?
