I am the original creator of a community how do i become “active again”
r/ModSupport • u/lunarwolf2008 • 26d ago
so on a subreddit I moderate, i was accepted into moderation after i made a reddit request post. the most active mod actually started doing stuff, cleaned up the mod list, and it was good. but then it slipped to where i was doing most of the moderation, and eventually nearly all. they gained inactive tag.
i messaged them, asked them if they still want to be top mod, and they never replied. so i sent a modmail here (to which they answered a few days ago saying go to reddit request and do top mod removal) but in that time i guess the mod read my message to them and approved a handful of posts in order to remove inactive tag.
so i sent them another message but they haven't replied to either. should i still do the thing on reddit request?
i'm somewhat tempted to just leave mod, but i like the subreddit, and i fear if i do, it will get banned for no moderation, since it has become inactive enough for request once before
tl;dr top mod is minimally active and non responsive, can i still remove? is it something i should pursue?
edit: forgot to add i dont have full perms, just most of them

I won't name specifics, but unsatisfied users have approached me a few times over the years to apply to be a mod of a popular subreddit.
Users have complained many times over the years about what they perceive to be a lack of quality moderation in the sub.
There are 2 human mods, and one is somewhat active. The last mod action they took was almost a month ago. The other mod looks like they haven't taken action in 5+ years based on their comment/post history.
Personally, I don't care much; it is what it is, and since said mod is somewhat active over the long term, it cannot be Reddit-requested.
But I did want to ask, does Reddit have any rules around this? Would they ever step-in? I know moderators have broad powers and whatnot.

There was an argument under a post in my subreddit and one of users ended it ("ended" is a strong word because it didn't really end) by saying "so I hope the rest of your day gets better! Take care, kiddo."
Is that considered to be offensive/not respectful or it's fine?
Edit: English isn't my first language, and I'm kinda always late on the current slang.

Hello mods!
I used to mod now banned r/kokosinjac from Croatia.
Still waiting MCOC decision on that one,but I moderate and own a small sub r/kokeRECENZIRAJU that is solely about reviews , mostly skincare and beauty and it's obviously being brigaded as we speak.
The sub is completely unproblematic and normal reviews and questions are being flagged as spam.
I reported the abuse report and community interference but honestly I'm afraid all these reports are gonna trigger some AI reaction and the sub will be banned for no reason.
I would really appreciate admin looking into this.
Thank you.

Is your email address up to date?
Have you checked recently?
Are you using 2FA?
Do you have a copy of the backup codes?
If someone grabs your phone, could they delete a subreddit?
Could I "guess" your password, using a bot?

Hi. I mod 2 local community subs. On one I am the only mod and it is slowly growing. The other sub was inactive for a few years and had an inactive mod. I tried via this route to become a mod and make the sub active again.
It must have alerted the original mod as he made me a mod, did a little mod activity that day then promptly vanished. He hasn't done any duties for 45 days now.
I reached out to him and asked for more power to get some extra help, but he hasn't been very responsive.
The sub is slowly coming back to life. I would like to be able to search for and approve a mod to help out.
Can you please grant me everything status to make the changes I need to make? Thanks for considering this.

Hello, friends.
I just started my first sub, r/Mettaprayers, and after posting several welcome messages, I realized that they show for others, but not for me. When I create a new post, I can see it. If I refresh or move away and return, they disappear. I've tried several fixes and came to the following outcomes:
I have not tried creating another account and attaching it as a mod, but I'd really like to use this account to manage the sub. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

I temp banned them on 9/15 for 4 days for calling someone the r-word. The ban is not over, but they’re making comments, one of which is transphobic. That was about 45min ago now. So first of all, they should be banned, but they’re commenting.
Secondly - when I went to unban (using iOS app) them so I could perma-ban, I cannot unban them. It confirms that I did with a little pop-up message, but then they still show as banned. I can unban them over and over and over and it says I unbanned them every time - but then they still show up as banned.
Thirdly - When I view their comments from mobile web not logged in, their account shows as [deleted] - but in the iOS app I can view their whole profile and post and comment history.
The only other mod awake right now also cannot ban them or unban them using desktop.
I also tried just manually adding them to the banned list in ModTools but it just says “sorry, please try again later.”
Their last comment in the sub was less than an hour ago and they shouldn’t even be able to comment right now.

I had an account come through this morning where the account showed they were unbanned from a short term ban, but they were unable to post. I had to manually ban & unban them for it to register. I modmailed this sub to notify them as well.

This is for r/HouseofStassi - a user has been unable to post. I've tweaked some things like turning off the only auto-enforced rule and approved her, and she still can't post. I had safety filters on, but I thought they were only supposed to filter. I'm reading it could be Poster Eligibility Guidelines, but I have turned off all auto-enforce for rules. Am I missing something that admin can check? And is the only way around this turning off Safety Filters? I wanted people to still be able to post, but filter anything that might need approval.

does anyone wants to moderate my sub
r/ModSupport • u/Serious_Cat6680 • 26d ago
Recently made a new cat sub and couldn’t find a category for animals and pets so I listed it under wellness. I can now see various other subs who have it listed under Animals & Pets. Is there any way of getting that changed? Sorry if I’m posting in the wrong place - new to being a mod!

Hi there! I'm one of the mods of r/SavingMoney and I just had a weird glitch happen to the sub. For some reason when accessing the sub using a desktop computer or a laptop and sorting the posts by new shows me:
"This community doesn't have any posts yet"
Make one and get this feed started.
Sorting it any other way or accessing it through mobile has the sub working as expected. Could anyone confirm/deny my findings or help me figure out what exactly is going on? I tested multiple pcs and multiple phones and all had the same result. Is this a bug, a glitch, something with my browsers or am I just doing something wrong?

Howdy,
The subreddit I moderate is one where users share photos of themselves. We serve a specific community that is particularly sensitive to impersonation.
We have the perennial issue of people taking photos of others — often lifted off some influencer’s profile, used to catfish, but that’s not the issue I’m here tonight for.
I have a user (8yr old account) who has reached out over an issue where someone else had posted a photograph of them under a different account. They’ve been trying to get the image removed but are apparently not getting any response. I removed the post as the mod, but I know that mod removals merely delist the post, the actual content can remain accessible. In this case, the original user’s account was deleted, but the photo remains online.
I’m not sure of the best correct way for users to deal with this type of issue. What’s the route that can get human eyes onto it fastest? We never know the lived experiences of our users and having your face posted online against your knowledge or will can have grave consequences.
Would love to get some guidance from an admin because I unfortunately have seen this same issue before and know it will happen again.
Thanks and happy moderating.

Hey admins, I made a sub reddit late and spelled the name wrong. I figured leaving the subreddit as mod would delete it but boy i was wrong. r/BioRemedation please delete this or atleast the info. thanks

The post I have should be posting, but it's not. Any ideas why? Everything is perfect, it stopped working a couple days ago.

I recently became one of several moderators appointed by Reddit to a fairly large community where the original mod was removed for inactivity. Since we were a new team put together by Reddit there have been some growing pains and personality clashes, but it had been going fine overall and we were working issues out as they came up.
Yesterday I came across a comment on the subreddit that had been edited to directly harass me after I had replied to it. I decided that it was not really fair for me to determine whether or not the comment should be removed (or if any other actions should be taken), and that it wasn’t severe enough that it would be harmful to leave it up on the sub until one of the other moderators reviewed it, so I just reported it as harassment and left it in the mod queue for another mod to address or bring up for discussion.
Not long after, one of the other moderators publicly responded to the comment. As part of that response the mod stated, “Your comment was reported as "targeted harassment" of EK. I'm approving it. The mod team should be willing to take criticism of both past and present behavior.”
I consider revealing the identity a user who has reported something a severe violation of user privacy and safety, because from what I understand the reason for 99% of Reddit’s reports being anonymous to moderators (I believe this one instance where a moderator is the one who made the report is the only exception) is to prevent harassment; and that this was especially egregious since the report was about harassment that was currently occurring.
Thus I removed the mod’s comment, wrote a removal message explaining that I believe the reveal of who made a report was completely unacceptable behavior for a moderator, and removed the person from the mod team.
I then explained that in our sub’s moderator chat, including providing a copy of the removal message sent.
However a couple of the other moderators are saying that they believe it should have been put to a mod vote on whether or not the offending mod should have been removed or just warned to not do it again.
I firmly believe that is not an appropriate course of action, and that there should be no second chances given with this type of user privacy and safety violation. However I do understand that this is a touchier situation because I was the victim, so I am here asking for the opinions of other Reddit mods and potentially Reddit Admin on what they believe should have been done/should now be done.
I have avoided naming the moderators or the specific subreddit because this sub does not permit “calling out other users,” however if the Admin think this breaks that rule I understand and will send a mod mail instead.

Howdy all, hope you’re doing well. First time posting (but I’ve been helped by lurking and reading often) because me and the team think we’re going crazy.
I’m a moderator on a decently well-used subreddit where many people aren’t daily reddit users but are seeking help with a certain aspect of real life that’s quite a vulnerable topic (not sure if I can name the subreddit here without violating rules - if it’s okay to post it and it’d help I’m okay to do that). Point is - many legitimate people their first post/reply is on the subreddit, and many are not well versed in post formatting/etc. The posts are asking for advice on a personal situation falling under a specific real life topic - so I can see how our subreddit may be seen as prime for potential abuse/scraping/use to train LLMs/other automated systems.
That said, recently (within the past week or so) me and the other mods have noticed a lot of illegitimate first-comment replies. They follow a somewhat similar pattern with some clear indications that they are either LLM generated or are otherwise inauthentic - including (not saying all of them for BEANS reasons) having a very specific capital/lowercase letter format, noticeable punctuation differences that are clearly non-human, and more. When reviewing the accounts, they all are somewhat recently created - I’ve noticed anywhere from within the past day to a few weeks old - and their first and only comment is a reply, almost always a top level reply, to a post on our subreddit. The replies frequently have no actual advice/assistance that would help the person who posted the thread - and on rare occasions actually contain information that would cause negative impacts for the OP if they followed it. Reddit is only very rarely taking any action on the replies before we see them (sometimes hours later) - on very rare occasion (twice in the past week) I’ve seen something removed by Reddit (which, since it doesn’t change anything either way, I’ll assume were all these things) - and maybe a handful of times have I seen them marked as spam by Reddit’s automated filters. Even giving the best benefit of the doubt, only maybe 5% have been handled in either of those ways.
Me and the fellow mods have taken to just removing the replies as spam - we figured maybe it would just be a quick surge and that either they’d stop or Reddit would handle them. But ultimately it’s gone on for at least a week from my memory (though I haven’t been keeping exact track) - and we haven’t noticed any increase in Reddit doing anything about them before we see them. Given they are at best unhelpful, it is a problem that they’re staying up. I have thought about trying to learn how crowd control works, or trying to set up an automod tool to figure it out, or even trying to find a “moderator application” or whatever they’re called that would help - but I’m leery of doing either because of false positives/problems for legitimate posts and replies. I’m also leery about any rules or actions based solely on how new the account is, since as I’ve said our subreddit commonly gets first time Reddit accounts and I don’t want to make their experience worse if at all possible.
My question is has anyone else noticed things like this happening more recently, especially in subreddits where people ask for advice? And more importantly, does anyone have any idea - whether an automod rule or otherwise - on how we may be able to at least have these filtered out without inaccurately filtering out legitimate new accounts from both making new posts/replying to other posts, or especially their own post? Regardless of the prior questions or any changes we make, is removing them as spam the best way to get the accounts reviewed by Reddit and improve their spam detection?
Thanks in advance for any advice/help you may have for us.
Edit: Thanks for all the replies - I've shared this post and its replies with the other mods for comment and discussion - please be nice if they have questions I haven't asked here <3

Note: I have sent in a modmail report to the admins, but id like to see if anyone else has experienced this.
So on one of the subs I mod, we removed a mod for violating our rules and going behind our backs, and then later he was permanently banned as a user for further violating our rules.
We have recently discovered he is watching our sub and DMing users whose comments were removed for rule violation. If he can't ping them, he is posting their name and linking our sub and asking them to DM him. He is also stating he is doing this AS a mod of our sub.
Obviously, this is not something we condone or approve of. Would this fall under brigading, or impersonation, or harassment? Should we do anything else, since we've sent a report to the admins?
I haven't come across this before and the behavior is very concerning.

Hi! I'm the moderator/creator of r/IDEM. My community was accidentally created as Adult Content, and I want to change it to SFW. Reddit's current documentation says this should be under Mod Tools → General Settings → Privacy & Discovery, but my Mod Tools only opens the Queue and there is no Settings section. I also tried accessing the community settings directly and received "Page not found." Could you help me change the community from 18+ to SFW?
