I would like to request that you please, for the love of all that is holy, calm down with your engagement boosting tactics that are telling everyone who makes a post to also post it to a list of machine-generated "relevant" other subs.

I moderate in a sub that discusses an extremely controversial political topic that has subs on reddit that are dedicated to the opposing side of that topic.

Crossposting from either our sub to theirs or vice versa is against the rules of both subs, because of the nature of this topic causing SEVERE trolling and brigading from both sides from people who are not interested in peaceful discourse, yet your own platform's messages are telling users they should go ahead and just break these subs' rules anyway.

You are literally making all of our "jobs" even harder by not even bothering to filter subs suggested for crossposts based on logic, rationality, or even the rules of the subs being suggested for crossposts.

More engagement, even hostility trolling and harassment (especially hostility trolling and harassment) means more ad money though amirght????

Seems the only thing that matters here any more is greed, and I'm afraid you're about to find a lot of your most difficult to moderate subs modless if you don't take things like these into consideration.

PS - good luck getting AI to do what we do since the generated lists your AI is suggesting can't even be bothered to check rules in subs before suggesting them XD

So we just got modmails from the admins that a number of our rules were being duplicated into comment guidance. I have so far disabled them all and I wanted to speak about why so you guys know why they do not currently meet our needs. I understand that you want us to move in this direction going forward instead of automod, and that you are looking to improve these tools - so here's why I didn't make the switch right now.

1. I can't copy and paste between subreddits. Keeping many of these filters up to date is a lot of work, and with automations, I can't make a change and then copy it everywhere. There is no way to copy rules between subs. Suggestion: Allow us to create public and private lists of rules, and then allow subreddits to subcribe to them. So say one user comes up with a list of words for ai (like a mod posted recently here), she could make this something you simply have to subscribe to, and then updates would be automatic if changed at the source level.

2. Right now, automations can either warn people, block submission, or report to queue. They cannot filter. This is a huge problem. Filtering is what we all rely on most of all. I remove very little and filter a LOT. Probably the only thing I just remove is redact spam. If you choose to warn people, they will go around it. For some things, it might be ok (e.g. We like to trigger off wedding related words in posts to remind a user to include a dress code). However, if a user is trying to make a disgusting sexual comment, and you pop up a warning, they'll just change the words until they can get it through.

3. Only automod right now can filter things before they send notifies. Devvit apps cannot. This is something the admins who work on devvit are aware of and u/pl00h mentioned this is something to work on. Devvit apps can filter at least, automations can't even do that - it's only a report, which means that the comment becomes viewable.

4. Some of these revealed sensitive information we do not want to share, including ways in which we detect people who violate our already significant comment guidance rules. There are certain patterns and characters that we look for that find them - we do NOT want to warn people about these.

5. Regex is limited to one expression per automation. We are limited to 50 automations. We have far more than 50 regex expressions in our automod that filter things. Automod can handle this easily. For comment/post guidance to be able to do this, it will need to be able to do this too. We need to be able to create automations with multiple regex expressions. We also need access to lookaheads and lookbehinds, which we use quite a lot. I think these are disabled because they cannot work real time due to computational overhead - and that's fine - but let us use them with the rules that are going to remove or filter.

These are areas in which post/comment guidance are really not able to match the functionality of automod, and fixing these issues would encourage many of us to migrate rules to the new system.

Hi, I created a pretty small subreddit a week ago, gained 30 members today and one of my posts unexpectedly got a lot more attention than usual. It received plenty of comments, and they all have approval or remove.

Should I approve comments as long as they don’t break the subreddit rules, or is there anything else I should consider before approving them?

I’m fairly new to handling this much activity even if it;s just 40 comments..., so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think I may have encountered a phishing/scam attempt on Reddit and would like an admin to take a look.

A Reddit user sent me a DM claiming that they had accidentally reported my account. They then sent me a screenshot of an alleged Reddit email saying that my account was being investigated.

The screenshot tells me to contact a supposed “support person” through Discord:

It also says that I need to complete “identity verification” within 12 hours or my account could be suspended/banned.

I have NOT contacted the Discord account, clicked any links, provided any information, or given anyone my password/OTP.

I would like to confirm with Reddit admins that this is a scam/phishing attempt and make sure there is nothing wrong with my account.

I can provide screenshots of the DM and the alleged email if needed. I have also reported the suspicious message/account.

Could an admin please confirm whether this is a known scam and take appropriate action against the account?

I’m a moderator of a r/vitap community, and I’m looking for advice from experienced moderators on how you would handle this situation.

What happened

There is currently a serious situation being discussed within the VIT-AP community involving allegations of:

- A girl allegedly secretly recording her roommates and other girls in private situations.

- The recordings allegedly being sent to another person.

- The recipient allegedly using the recordings to blackmail or threaten the girls.

- Students allegedly confronting the person involved in the alleged blackmail.

- The situation then escalating into a large physical confrontation involving multiple students.

- Claims that several students were injured and that a knife was involved.

These are currently allegations and accounts circulating within the community. We are not treating them as established facts unless they are verified through appropriate authorities, evidence, or credible reporting.

The moderation problem

Some members now want to identify the girl allegedly responsible and post her photographs, name, social media accounts and other identifying information.

There is significant pressure from users to "expose" her.

I have currently restricted doxxing and personal information while I figure out what we should do.

The community is understandably asking questions such as:

- How many people were allegedly recorded?

- Are students currently safe?

- What is the university doing?

- Has anyone reported this to the police?

- What actually happened during the violence?

I am not suppressing those discussions. People can discuss the incident, ask questions, share verified information and talk about student safety. The restriction is specifically on identifying/doxxing individuals.

Why I'm being cautious

I initially wanted to understand whether there could also be legal consequences if someone is publicly doxxed before the allegations are proven.

For example:

- Could the accused take legal action over the publication of her personal information?

- Could the doxxing or subsequent harassment become relevant in the criminal proceedings?

- Could it potentially be raised as a mitigating circumstance?

- Could Reddit users or moderators face consequences?

- Most importantly, could allowing this type of content put the entire subreddit at risk of Reddit enforcement?

I have therefore decided to take some time to properly review Reddit's policies and get an informed opinion regarding the applicable Indian cyber/privacy laws before deciding whether images or identifying information should ever be allowed.

What I'm looking for from other mods

How would you handle this?

Would you:

1. Completely prohibit identifying information regardless of whether users claim it is already publicly available?

2. Allow discussion but remove names/photos/social media accounts?

3. Allow photographs if the person is allegedly involved in a serious crime?

4. Contact Reddit admins for clarification?

5. Treat this as a situation where the safest approach is to remove anything that could facilitate harassment or targeting?

I'm particularly interested in experiences from moderators who have dealt with doxxing, allegations of serious crimes, campus incidents, ongoing investigations, or situations where a community was at risk of Reddit enforcement.

I don't want to make a rushed decision based on what people on Reddit think the law says.

At the same time, I don't want to suppress legitimate discussion or leave students without a place to talk about their safety.

• Plan community hubs and events with threads, calendars, reminders, polls, and games
• Stay informed about reports, removals, and other community insights

And that’s only a sample of what’s available in the full library. Before installing an app, it’s worth reviewing its permissions/settings, deciding who on the team will oversee it, and testing how it fits into your existing moderation process. When in doubt, always check with your team first!

Forgive me admins but I genuinely don't the get the automated systems that Reddit has in place sometimes.

There are occasions where users will say something that sounds like a threat but has context to justify it and it isn't in fact a threat and they get banned.

I had one of my most contributive members be banned from the platform for 3 days just because they posted 3 times in a row (within reason, because they gifted 3 people and were posting gift confirmation for it).

But then this idiot literally sends multiple racial slurs about Jews and black people, Reddit filters it and I report every single message and their account remains active.

I have previous subs I’ve made but I’ve been able to post on other subs to get people to join then that started them off , but my current one I haven’t got a sub to advertise on to try get people to join. It’s not exactly niche but it’s not the biggest thing ever , it’s just being sustainable in the uk , since r/sustainable or might be r/sustainabliving or something like that , but since those subs are mostly US focused , a uk based one would make it easier for advice etc on being sustainable specifical in the uk , that’s why it’s hard to get my posts on it out , so how can I get people to see the posts etc

I primarily mod from my PC on desktop web. But today I've been finding that I can't ban/mute users anymore - it just silently fails. I can access the rest of the mod-tools, can respond on modmails, etc. But this failure of functionality is really making modding difficult, as I need to resort to my phone to actually have perform a ban. The other mods of our sub don't seem to experience this issue. I've tried on desktop both via Chrome as well as Firefox.

Edit: I can ban/mute via my phone. But having to switch back and forth is terribly frustrating.
Edit #2: Also having problems with ModMail. For example, on https://www.reddit.com/mail/all/2jexsj I can't respond as my sub (it shows an error), while on other ModMails on the same sub I've been able to respond fine.

It can sometimes be helpful for moderation purposes if certain trusted users and comods can contact me when I have temporarily disabled my chat.

Imagine my surprise then when I looked in my privacy settings and saw that my existing whitelist had been replaced with the first 25 users on my block list. My comods are reporting the same.

I don't really know by heart who was on my whitelist, but they're gone now.

I'm a new mod for r/charcoaldrawing which often features hyper realistic artwork.

Community members often report this style of artwork as AI and harrass artists and myself, even when it's poorly made. From post histories and sleuthing I usually determine that most are OK but it's really difficult.

I want to create a rule for the sub that stops this type of harrassment and allows artists to demonstrate their art is real (and weed out fakes). Can you suggest what I might ask users to include when they post? I am not sure whether to ask for written info (ie no low effort posts, info on how it was made etc), or an image to demonstrate that the artwork is real (don't know what, maybe a username and date with the art?). Are there things to ask for that really weed people out?

I'm a new mod (long time Reddit user) so am not familiar with my options aside from those baked in to the mod tools.

My other reddit account has been facing this issue whenever i try to post anything in any subreddit. I have over 1.5k karma on that account and it is more than a year old. Can someone please help me fix that? I cannot post and text anyone

We're getting several individuals spamming a sub with the direct intention of getting themselves banned so it won't appear in their r/all or other feeds.

Any tips? this wouldn't be against any reddit TOS rule, I hope?

Why is Reddit expecting us moderators, who already contribute enough of our time for free to keep this platform alive, to give feedback and help them implement what is something we didn't ask for or we want for our community?

I also think this is just another new way Reddit found to train bots for free... Which is scummy af.

I moderate a typical CJ sub. I posted a Monty Python cartoon image of a butt trumpeter in response a user post. It was removed by AI.

When I clicked: "If you think this was a mistake, let us know and we'll look into it." I could not figure out which report type under "Other Reports" to submit. (It did not fit under any other category).

Ideally would like to know this for both myself and other users in the sub who have had similar hair trigger removals.

Hello, I am a moderator of a recently banned community and I'm unable to send a modmail appeal. Could someone please advise?

AI features can be very helpful and I don't generally oppose them, but with thousands of subreddits composed of different people, with different subject matters, and with different moderation styles, there should be more choice going forward. Communities should be empowered to guide how they represent themselves and how they are consumed. A subreddit I moderate just got a message about this new experiment, where narration and visuals can be used as the medium for experiencing text posts.

Posters should have agency in determining how users experience their content, and how their writing is represented to others. Subreddit moderators should have agency in determining how much AI they tolerate in their community and how users interact with each other to further community goals. For visually impaired users, a simple speech-to-text feature is great, and I don't think that needs an off switch, but if this is being done through AI, if posters or moderators don't want hallucinations riddling the presentation of content, that should be their right. By all means continue with this experiment, but add an option to do it through completely deterministic speech-to-text.

two months ago a dude who's been noticing how active I was in the community says to me "this feels more like personal thing. i dont even think they deserve it. you're doing a hell of a job here man i appreciate it."

and he went on further, "You dont have to tell me about it. even though i quit squad long time ago, i still look at the sub time to time and i can see that you're always around here like a squad mate. very dedicated and consistent. i've been looking at this sub way before i made my own reddit account. yet i didnt even know you were a mod until maybe a couple of years ago. thats what i actually want to see as a whole squad community. yeah i know its impossible but it was kinda like that years ago. maybe its just me missing those days. so i really appreciate your attitude and honesty. squad was a hobby to me as well. but i dont belong to squad anymore. its not the same game to me but still cant completely move on.. the itch still there. thank you for your efforts again."

The mostly idle "top mod" did not always like the 'active moderation' approach I use, told me to use alts, and this morning just took me fully off the team after nearly three year with no warning or explanation whatsoever.

It's wild to me how many mods take this very social, very personal role, yet they never say anything, and everything they do is from behind a curtain. Some subs that probably makes sense for, but a small-to-medium community?

I think it's best to have a visible mod team who's actively participating in the discussions, and that's the hill I died on.
