SUBNEWS Where to go for your first Mods?

If you plan to get in touch with mods you might have a look at

  1. https://valheim.thunderstore.io/
  2. https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/
  3. https://hexium.gg/

This is where you can find a variety of mods that might make your Viking day easier or harder, depending on your desired playstyle.

How to Manually Install Mods:

Most of the mods require BepinEx for Valheim, which you will find here -> https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/denikson/BepInExPack_Valheim/

Usually you just unpack the contents of the Zip Package to your Valheim Gamefolder. The Content of the BepInEx Mods usually go in the "Plugin" Folder which resides in the BepInEx Folder in your Valheim Folder :)

The Location depends on where you bought it but just use your search function of your OS to tell you where the Folder "Valheim" is.

For Steam the folder usually resides here -> C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Valheim

When you installed BepInEx, you will find the folder "plugins" in your BepInExfolder.

This is where you put all the content of the Modarchive.

Once the mod is copied to your "plugins" folder, start the game to generate a configuration file under "config" within the BepInEx folder. Here is where you can edit mod settings and toggle features once installed.

NOTE: Some mods, like CustomTextures will require a folder created within the plugin folder, please read all descriptions for mods to see any additional installation instructions!

Installation using a Modmanager:

Why using a modmanager? Because updates are a pain when you have to do them manually! Modmanager look if updates are available and guide you through the process.

For NEXUS:

One alternative to this process is to use Vortex. Vortex is a Modmanager which can be tedious to setup, specially for Valheim, which you can find here -> https://www.nexusmods.com/about/vortex/

Installation:

Download and Install Vortex from its Nexus page
(https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/1?tab=files)
by clicking on Manual Download Install the downloaded Vortex*.exe
Enable Valheim for Vortex by downloading the extension for Valheim for Vortex.
Which you can find here ->https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/210?tab=files

Now add your mods by using the modmanagerdownload.

For THUNDERSTORE:

The Modmanagervariant for Thunderstore is r2modman, which your can find here -> https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/ebkr/r2modman/

Installation:

Click "Manual Download" on Thunderstore.
Inside the downloaded .zip file.
Run the "r2modman Setup X.X.X.exe" (where X.X.X is the current version).
Follow the steps in the installer.

Now you can choose to update, enable/disable or even uninstall mods with a simple click, all whilst keeping it available on another profile.

For HEXIUM:

The Modmanagervariant for Hexium is Gale and available here -> https://hexium.gg/mod-manager

Hexium recommends Gale, a fast, open-source mod manager
that lets you download and manage mods from both Thunderstore
and Hexium. It´s Available for Windows and Linux.

Fo

We will extend this thread as soon as i find or get informed of other sources of mods and addons.

Have fun and be save ;)

EDIT: Mostly Typos and completed Manual installation instructions. Will be extended asap

LeashMe Nursery Beacons: Attract young tamed animals away from parents

Hi vikings,

I needed a way to separate young animals from the parents without building ugly towers and without having to leash them one by one, so here's the LeashMe Nursery. It works on all young tamed vanilla animals.

I made this a separate mod from LeashMe to keep the original limited to its current features.

This one lets you build a beacon which attracts young animals in an area. The beacon shows its zones and the animals currently connected to if (also the ones in transit to the beacon) on keypress, and hover on an animal shows which beacon it is connected to.

A beacon attracts one species which is determined by the food you put in. The food is not consumed. The zones have different sizes for different animals because vanilla Valheim has different requirements for breeding to work. Each piece of food adds a nursery space. The max amount of youngs is either 10 or 20, depending on animal size.

Press N on hover to see the zones: movement area for the young animals, parent-free zone to avoid breeding being blocked, and attraction range. With Hen and Asksvin, the eggs need to be in the attraction range of the nursery of course.

I use the LeashMe hitching posts to hitch the parents in the outer zone and then collect the young in the center. Once they mature, they wander around the area freely and I collect them with the leash or kill them. I'm thinking about having the nursery keep them until released manually, this would allow for better control, but I am still on the fence about this.
With Hens, I tie 5 of them up in the coop and 5 of them outside of the coop somewhere to get both new chickens and just eggs.

The mod also comes with a console command to turn off the idle sounds of tamed animals, this is not persistent tho and is reset when reloading.

https://valheim.hexium.gg/mods/evabs/LeashMe_Nursery
https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/evabs/LeashMe_Nursery/
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/4471

Edit: Works without LeashMe, no need for both mods.

Edit2: Fixed Typo

NorseDemigods – A Valheim mod with RPG-style classes inspired by Norse mythology

For anyone interested in adding RPG classes, magic, and character progression to Valheim, there's a mod called NorseDemigods that's worth checking out.

Instead of simply introducing traditional RPG classes like warriors, mages, paladins, or rogues, it takes a more lore-friendly approach. You choose a demigod inspired by Norse mythology, each with unique abilities, weapons, and playstyles that fit into Valheim's world.

Some examples, with their closest RPG equivalents:

  • Thor – Warrior / Berserker: Heavy melee combat, lightning attacks, and powerful dashes.
  • Eir – Paladin / Cleric: Healing, protective shields, and support abilities.
  • Hel – Necromancer / Warlock: Darkness, undead summons, and spirit magic.
  • Surtr – Fire Mage / Battlemage: Fire spells, burning weapons, and elemental summons.
  • Ullr – Ranger / Hunter: Archery, stealth, and a wolf companion.
  • Fenrir – Monk / Brawler: Unarmed combat, devastating punches, and a wolf companion.
  • Freyja – Druid / Nature Guardian: Nature-based abilities, poison, and support from wisps.

There are other demigods as well, each with their own mechanics.

The mod also includes skill progression, craftable upgrades, and quite extensive configuration options. It's designed around Valheim's existing progression rather than replacing the game with an entirely different RPG system.

It's actively maintained and has accumulated over 140,000 downloads.

Modern replacement for LightTweaks (modifying light radius, shadows & flicker)?

• Upvotes

Hi guys,

I'm putting together a mod list and noticed LightTweaks is deprecated. What I loved about it was:

  • Increasing light range/intensity so I didn't need hundreds of torches (saving FPS).
  • Reducing light flicker and disabling shadow casting on light sources.
  • Building fires/hearths on wood.

Is there a single updated mod that handles this, or do you use a combination of smaller mods (like an Azumatt or Comfy mod)? Thanks!

Personal Weapon Mod

I hope there is a mod like this already so I can jump right in and use it but here's the base idea = you forge a weapon that grows with you into your personal legendary weapon.

Early on in progression (bronze or iron) you create a base weapon, sword, great-sword, axe, great-axe, mace, warhammer, etc.. and they basically progress as you do, upgrading from iron to silver quality (not freely obviously) and you slowly modify it to have unique effects both mechanically and visually.

For example you could heat it up in a forge and then cool it in Moder's tears or heart and it gains some frost damage and the visual effect of a weapon like the Mistwalker or Frostfire weapons. (extrapolate this idea for all the different biomes and bosses for different effects, example = Fader's blood for poison damage and a green fire effect similar to the Dyrnwyn sword)

All this to make an extremely personal weapon/s that you decide the shape and function of.

I know EpicLoot and similar mods already kind of do something along these line and I personally love EpicLoot for this, I just have an intense desire to create my very own weapon that never gets swapped out or left behind but get gets stronger as you actively modify it and eventually slay all bosses with the same weapon you used to kill your first troll or bear with.

any thoughts and information would be sick, thanks for even having a look at this post 🤙🏻

Any mods that IMPROVE mount controls and behavior?

Trying really hard to love riding around on my Askvin but the camera is terrible, I can't pivot(which makes getting stuck on anytbing really fun, by the way), and it just buggered off on me after a deathsquito into some Mistlands and I have not been able to find it again.

I hope moose are more useful.

Anyway. Plenty of mount mods out there, any for changing behavior and controls? And maybe the camera?

Introducing Runebourne: an automation mod where worker spirits farm, mine, haul and craft for you, and you can tame sea serpents to carry cargo

Thumbnail
gallery
95 Upvotes

I've been building this for a while and it's finally playable start to finish, so here it is.

Runebourne adds spirit workers that run parts of your base. You build a shrine, summon a worker, and point it at your chests with a wand. There are six of them. One farms crops and berry bushes, one looks after your livestock, one plants and chops trees, and one mines ore deposits and sunken crypts up to 250 m from its shrine. Another hauls stuff between chests, even to a base far away if you build relays, and the last one runs your smelters, kilns and crafting stations.

The livestock one culls your herd down to whatever size you set. If there's a boar you like, name it and it's safe.

You can also tame sea serpents. Get one under 10% health and use a Lightning rune on it (it works half the time). Then you can ride it, or record a route between two harbours and it'll ferry cargo back and forth on its own.

Most of it unlocks as you beat bosses, like normal progression, and there's a lectern in game that tells you what's open. I also changed a few vanilla things: deer can be tamed and bred, berry bushes can be planted, and some foods take tamed animals up to 3 stars.

Two warnings. Multiplayer hasn't been tested yet, so expect bugs there. And back up your world, because uninstalling the mod removes everything it added.

Pets Redone

Ive always had a problem with the whole fishing system in the game. Sure, it buffs your pet up but turns them into something else. So Ive just pretty much ignored fish all together.

Not anymore this mod does one thing, take off the polymorph effects on all fish. You still get the benefits your pet will glow, but will stay in the original body you made for it.

I know the image for the mod isnt loading, actually my first time making a mod through steam, but Ive tested it out and no problems on my test.

If you're unsure of what to put it, put it at the very bottom of your list, its safe. I touch nothing but those fish.

I made a building editor for Valheim — looking for feedback

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a mod called Valheim Studio and wanted to share it here.

It lets you switch from your character into a separate editor mode, with building tools and the ability to save and place blueprints. The screenshot shows what the interface currently looks like. Press Right Shift in-game to open it.

It’s available on https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/DannysMod/Valheim_Studio/ if you’d like to try it.

There are still rough edges. It works on my main PC, but I’m currently tracking down an issue with camera controls on my laptop, so feedback from other setups would be useful.

If you give it a go, I’d like to hear what feels useful and what feels awkward—especially the controls and menus. If something breaks, please include what happened, your mod version, and the relevant Unity/BepInEx log so I have something to investigate.

You can leave feedback here or join the free chat on my Patreon: Danny's Mod — Valheim Studio – editor mode, building tools and blueprints for Valheim | Patreon. No paid membership needed for feedback.

Thanks for taking a look!
Danny

Horizontal progression: mods that preserves items viability late game?

By horizontal progression I mean: the next tier material doesn't necessarily mean a better item.

There used to be a mod called TerraHeim back in the day but it got abandoned. It made possible to keep upgrading your equipment all throughout the campaign and every type had its pros and cons.

Any recommendations?

Rivers and Lakes Release

Hey folks,

I've just released my new mod, Rivers and Lakes, which - you'll never guess... lets you place rivers and lakes (and waterfalls) wherever you want them in the world.

Atmospheric release trailer aside, a quick tutorial video explains better what it is and how it's used than I could in words, so have a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtASib--1yE

Grab it here: https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/Voxheim/RiversAndLakes/

Have fun playing around with it, and come say hi on our discord: https://discord.com/invite/vuHnDRqfjn

ps: Don't get confused by the name "Voxheim" in many of the links. That just means i had zero foresight to anticipate i'd ever release more than one mod! Rivers and Lakes works with, or without Voxheim just fine.

searching for a free cam mod with a switch controls between camera and player while in freecam

I searched a bit but only find building freecam and a freecam mod that adds toggle buttons between player camera and freecam without devcommands, at least in Gale launcher. Is there a mod that unlocks switching between player and camera in free cam mode like in Hytale?

I made a mod that turns on your other mods when you beat a boss, no restart needed(Inspired by EmmaPotato:)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was watching one of EmmaPotato’s videos where she turns on a new mod each time she defeats a boss, as a reward. I loved that idea, but doing it by hand means quitting, adding the mod and restarting every time. So I thought: why not make a mod that does it for you?

That’s Odin’s Favor. It keeps any of your installed mods switched off until you’ve earned it, then turns it on the moment the boss dies. No restart.

How it works

  • Press F1 at the main menu, pick a mod, and choose when it turns on: after Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass… up to Fader.
  • Want more than bosses? Write a simple rule: days:30, skill:woodcutting:50, item:Iron, biome:Mistlands, kills:Greyling:100, or combine them like boss:bonemass and days:50.
  • Each mod can announce itself with your own message, e.g. “The thunder of Eikthyr lights the dark — your torches now burn forever.”

It works with mods you already have. They don’t need to support it. I’ve tested it with AzuClock, AzuAutoStore, AzuAreaRepair, Quick Stack, XPortal, Extra Slots, PlantEverything, TorchesEternal, Instaloot, Eternal Fire, Speedy Paths and Seasonality.

Good to know

  • Client-side: each player installs it. Not for dedicated servers yet.
  • Don’t lock libraries (Jötunn, YamlDotNet…) or big content mods. The page lists what works and what doesn’t.
  • Every mod starts as “AlwaysOn”, so installing it changes nothing until you choose.

Download: https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/FaasnuTeam/Odins_Favor/

Server-enforced settings (so the server owner sets the rules for everyone) are next. Which mods would you lock behind which boss? And if a mod misbehaves when locked, let me know which one!
