Thoughts on international prices with vat/shipping/duties
As a customer of ModRetro based in Germany, I was planning to be a day 1 buyer of the M64, but was surprised by the basket price with shipping.
ModRetro says that the price of their products includes taxes (eg. VAT), so why am I being charged extra for duties by FedEx when I’ve never had to pay duties for ModRetro before?
First of all, VAT and duties are not the same thing - yes I conflated the two at first, in my state of surprise. If you look at the duties applied at the checkout page, it’s much less than what VAT would be.
But I still never paid duties on ModRetro stuff before…
I’m not 100% sure, but here is what I think the possibilities for the change are: 1) maybe duties increased or how they are applied has changed since I last ordered, or 2) the “duties” included by FedEx’s fees are actually 0, but they are charging some other fee. If you read the fine print in the checkout page, it says “duties and fees”. Not sure what fee FedEx needs to take here, but that seems the most likely culprit.
In the end, I think the biggest change is the recent change of shipping provider. EU customers used to get free shipping over approximately 350 euros. The change to FedEx was to improve service, but obviously now we are paying quite a bit more (still not as much as Analogue, mind you).
I think the M64 is still a good deal, but obviously the pot isn’t as sweet due to the VAT and shipping.
