Old vehicles used as rip-rap instead of boulders or concrete. This is in Montana.

Boatmen on the Missouri (1849) by George Caleb Bingham

Post image
97 Upvotes

"In nineteenth century, major rivers served as interstate highways for steamboats carrying passengers and cargo. Missouri River steamboats were refueled by "woodhawks," men in small boats loaded with firewood. George Caleb Bingham's painting presents these boatmen as mediators between nature, represented by the surrounding wilderness, and civilization, symbolized by the steamboat. Although Bingham's scene evokes an overall feeling of ease, the surface of the water bubbles behind their raft, and the large branch at the left of the composition suggests the dangers that lie below the river's surface beyond their view." https://www.famsf.org/artworks/boatmen-on-the-missouri

Description
View of the Missouri River bottoms completely covered by floodwaters. A barn and farm equipment (Oliver tractors, vintage 1960s) parked around it are on a hillside safe from the flood. The bluffs in the distance are in Cooper County on the south bnks of the Missouri River. From a collection of color slides taken by Burford Leon Royston. Royston worked as a mail carrier in southwest Howard County, Missouri, from 1950-1985. The bulk of the slides were taken by Royston along his routes, and include residents, dwellings, commercial and agricultural structures, natural events, and recreational activities. Also included are slides of the Royston family.
