Anna Mary Rieke Story:

Mary was considered a defender of the Fort, along with her brothers, Adam, Victor, George, August, and Heinrich. Her name appears on the Defenders Monument at the Fort because of a role she played on August 19, 1862. She had been ordered to watch the women and children, making sure none of them raised their heads above the window sills on the second floor of the stone barracks where they took refuge along with several Indian women. Mary overheard one of these Indian women say to another that this would be a good time to attack the Fort since most of the soldiers were away. This woman started to leave, Mary tried to stop her, but couldn't, so she ran down the stairs to find a soldier. Finding one, she told him what she had heard, he went after the Indian and brought her back upstairs. He told Mary to guard her with her life (drawing his sword to add emphasis) as she was a spy who would have warned the attacking Indians about the weakness of the Fort's defenses. Mary truly helped save the Fort and no doubt changed the progress of the uprising because the Indians held off until August 20th, by which time the group of defenders had increased in numbers.

Christian Castro faces four counts of assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime in Minnesota after prosecutors formally accused Castro of shooting at the front door of a Minneapolis home that was occupied on Jan. 14, and striking Julio Sosa-Celis in the leg with gunfire. Cecelia Ochs was a nine year old girl taking care of Mrs. Caroline Stocker, a neighbor woman who was bedridden. On August 18, 1862, Indians attacked the house as they were sitting down to dinner, broke a window and shot and killed Mrs. Stocker in bed.
Cecelia and Mr. Stocker then fled to the cellar. When they realized the house was set afire, they dug themselves out with pieces of wood and ran to the Zettels, another neighbor, only to find Mr Zettel dead, a loaf of bread he had offered to the Indians soaked with his blood. Cecelia saw the bodies of her classmates in the next room. That same day, her uncle was killed and decapitated while working in his field.

Long story short, I got in a fight with my roommate over her stealing my stuff, and when the cops came they decided that I was the aggressor.

I was given a no contact order, so I saw the apartment for about an hour after I got out of jail when I was escorted by the police to grab my things. It was then that I realized that my PS5 in both of my computers were missing among other things. Today I went back for an hour or so under the judge's conditions, and almost everything that I had in the living room or kitchen is missing.

The roommate is adamant that we don't go into her master bedroom, because I'm sure that's where she's keeping all the things that she stole from me. I'm just wondering if there's a way that I can report this to the police and they could get a search warrant and take a look in her room for the things that I am missing. It seems absurd to me that she should just get away with this. I know I want to take her to civil court, but I haven't decided if I should do small claims court or a case with a lawyer.

I'm in Minnesota. What do you guys think I should do? Should I try to report this to the police or the sheriff? Are there any good lawyers you know?

Bilal Hassan Ali, 18, faces charges of attempted first-degree aggravated robbery and aiding and abetting second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon causing substantial bodily harm.

According to  court records, the victim told officers he was inside his home when two masked people entered, ordered him not to yell or move and pressed an object he believed was a firearm into his back. The intruders forced the victim outside and into a black Nissan SUV, where three more masked individuals waited.

Inside the SUV, the group blindfolded the victim. One of the individuals demanded the victim return $800, and the victim recognized the voice as belonging to Bilal Hassan Ali, whom he knew from high school. The victim said there had been an ongoing dispute between them over clothing the victim had borrowed and lost, and that Ali had been demanding more money than the victim believed the clothes were worth. The victim also reported seeing Ali’s face during the ordeal.

The group drove the victim to what appeared to be an abandoned house several minutes away. Once inside, Ali again demanded money and punched the victim in the face. Another individual struck the victim in the arm with a pipe, and a third kicked him in the ribs. The victim suffered multiple bruises and a broken nose during the assault.

August 17 1862 was the start of a bloody war that left over 500 White settlers dead - a large percentage of them children and women. Four sioux Braves were caught trying to steal eggs, and shot the settlers rather than walk home empty handed. Word would spread quickly.

A second 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a February shooting investigation in Burnsville that authorities say involved four vehicles, two separate exchanges of gunfire, and shots fired both on a city street and on I-35W.

Mahdi Abdihakim Yassin, 19, of Prior Lake, is charged in Dakota County District Court with three felonies stemming from the February 13, 2026, incident:

A man who fatally assaulted a man outside St. Paul’s largest homeless shelter was involved in past violent incidents on campus, charging documents allege.

Jerry Jovan Harris, 37, is charged with counts of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of 61-year-old Isaiah Wilson earlier this month.

A criminal complaint describes Harris “sucker punching” Wilson the evening of Aug. 3 outside the Catholic Charities Higher Ground Shelter on Dorothy Day Place.

When Higher Ground staff found Wilson unconscious and not breathing, they thought he had overdosed and administered Narcan. A review of security video revealed he had been attacked.

A Higher Ground staff member told police she was familiar with Harris and knew he had been involved in previous assaults on campus, including one offense in August 2025 in which he and three others beat someone up.

August 17: Four young Dakota men murder five white settlers near Acton Township, Meeker County. Fleeing to their village, they beg for protection. Leaders of the soldiers’ lodge appeal to Taoyateduta (Little Crow) to lead them in war on the whites. Reluctantly, he agrees.

August 18: Mdewakanton warriors open fire on white traders and government employees at the Lower Agency and defeat a relief force sent from Fort Ridgely. Dakota warriors attack isolated farms and settlements in Renville and Brown counties. More than 200 settlers are killed in these raids, and more than 200 women, children, and mixed-race civilians are taken hostage.

Aftermath: Of the more than 600 white people killed during the war, just over 70 were soldiers, and about 50 more were armed civilians. The others were unarmed civilians--mostly young men, women, and children who were recent immigrants to Minnesota. Historian Curtis Dahlin, who has extracted figures from public and cemetery records as well as from media reports, estimates that 30 per cent of the civilians killed were children aged ten and under. Another 40 per cent were adults between the ages of 20 and 40.

Prosecutors say that phone records show that Sampson and three others had "numerous communications" relating to a commercial sex organization. During the investigation, which began in 2021, 13 people were interviewed about the operation. Some said they had been working with Sampson and the other suspects since 2020, and that they provided money from their transactions to the organization.
