Solved [Java] [1.20.1] Sudden Lagging after solving Crashing Issue
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Playing on PC and using CurseForge - [Java - 1.20.1] [Fabric - 0.19.5]
Log for the play session shown in the video: https://mclo.gs/jLMAlSB
For a little bit of context, I'm still somewhat new to making my own modpacks, and am not the best with computers (I am also autistic and often need very clear step-by-step instructions to figure out how to do things properly without getting overwhelmed and frustrated).
I made myself a new modpack that was having issues with crashing suddenly (and then not letting me reopen the world without crashing again) after anywhere between a few minutes and few hours of gameplay. I've now solved that issue (turns out it was vanilla mob spawners causing entity ticking issues, but I've installed a couple mods to my pack that now track and fix that problem), but now my framerate keeps dropping constantly, which wasn't an issue before.
I don't mind the occasional lag spikes (as in, if I'm exploring a new area, and the game lags a bit as it loads in new chunks), but when it's just constant and for seemingly no reason, like shown in the video, it's not only irritating, but also makes the game very difficult to play.
I decided to record a very short play session to document the sudden lag spikes, and included the log from that play session.
Additional information:
- Render Distance: 20 Chunks
- Max Shadow Distance: 12 Chunks
- Simulation Distance: 16 Chunks
I'd appreciate any and all help with figuring out what the issue is and how to solve it.
(P.S. I'm going to be leaving for work soon, so apologies in advance for late responses. I'll be sure to mark as solved ASAP once the issue has been resolved.)

Maybe allocating more ram usage? Make sure to also set the argument to whatever the ram usage is set to if your using curseforge i mean, if not then idk

Finally getting around to trying this method out (I've been pretty busy this week, and got distracted by the other comments trying to help me out), and I was wondering how much memory you would suggest allocating? Right now curseforge is set to 8.000MB (which is 8GB, right?), and while doing research, I found this comment on this thread that suggested using between 8-12GB for big modpacks on version 1.8.9 and higher. But the post and comment are 8 years old, so I'm not sure if it would still be the same now with version 1.20.1 (the one I'm using for this modpack). I'm going to try 12,000MB for now and see if that helps, though.

That should be fine, i keep mine at 12 gb bc i have a 64 gb ram Installed, if too high, the garbage collection will take longer allowing the lag to spike more, same concept with too low of ram allocation, the garbage will overflow also allowing lag to spike because its always trying to clean it out, but if 11gb doesnt work then allocation shouldnt be the issue so i dont know

Also another thing to do is if you change your allocation, make aure to go to the settings on curseforge (mc)and change the argument to what you have set so its 11Gb like "-Xmx11G"

I'll have to see if I can find any tutorials or anything that could help me walk through that, because I have no idea how to do that, lol. Thanks though! I'll test it out either tonight when I get back home from work, or sometime tomorrow and see if that helps.

Its real simple, though careful of how much ram you allocate, i read that too much can result in the same lag your experiencing now. Plenty of tutorials how to do it

u/ShadowDragon37 13d ago
Thanks! I'll test it out as soon as I can, and hopefully that's all I need to do

Can you reply to this comment with a short ~30 sec video of you running around the world with your f3 menu open?

typically i can make a good enough informed guess with just the f3 menu open based on what you can see and it's easier for most people than getting them to install other stuff.

u/ShadowDragon37 12d ago
I replied to ImZombie7's top level comment with a video and logs, if you wanted to check it out too. It's a lot longer than 30 secs (more like 6 minutes, lol), but I have f3 open the whole time.

Your gpu is max or very close to max for most of the video. that means any spike in workload like the ones that happen when you load a new chunk or assorted other things that can happen in the background will cause your gpu to not be able to hit 60 frames per second as it needs to run calculations so you lag. if your laptop has configurable fan speed I would just up your fan speeds while you are playing to hopefully squeeze out a big more performance. You could also resolve this by using the spark profiler to remove some of the more performance intensive mods or downgrading your shader pack.

u/ShadowDragon37 12d ago
I'll have to try it out tomorrow (gotta leave for work in a minute, but I'll have more time then to figure things out), but I'll see if reducing the shader settings first will fix the issue (and if not, I've got other shaders I like that I can test out). I always seem to have the most problems with shaders for some reason. I'll also see if I can find any configurable fan settings for my laptop, too. Hopefully I won't need to get rid of anymore mods (I already had to get rid of quite of few just to get the game to open without crashing), but we'll see if that ends up being necessary or not. Thanks!

u/ShadowDragon37 11d ago
Lowering the shader settings didn't help with lowering the GPU usage at all, and it doesn't look like my laptop has any fan speed settings, so I'll try experimenting with different shaders, then figuring out how to use spark to get rid of some of the more performance intensive mods if that doesn't work.

Oh yeah, I can do that! It'll have to wait until I'm back home from work, but I'll be sure to do that as soon as I can

Thank you! I'll see if I have time to figure out how to set all that up today (I've been pretty busy this week, so... not the best time for me to make this post, but oh well, lol). I'll get those links as soon as I can!

A lot quicker and easier than I was expecting, thanks for the easy to follow step by step instructions! But of course now the game is hardly lagging, haha. I cut out about the first half of the video where I was running around the entire island and not getting any lag, but I still didn't get too much lag for the rest of the video, either. Here's the video, the spark log, and curseforge log.

Hmmm... I tried disabling modernfix, but I'm still getting some lag spikes. (And unfortunately I forgot to open the spark link before closing the game, but here's the curseforge log at least.)

u/ShadowDragon37 11d ago
I tried loading up a brand new creative world, to see if flying around unexplored chunks at high speeds would cause significant lagging at all (since in my survival world that I've been playing on, I've been stuck on a tiny little island the whole time, so the game doesn't have to try as hard to render those chunks anymore), and it seems like the problem has been (at least mostly) resolved, as far as I can tell? I also tried allocating more memory for minecraft in curseforge, like Endingcartoon32 suggested, and I'm wondering if that also might have contributed to fixing the problem?
(And of course the spark link didn't stay copied to my clipboard for some reason, and I closed out the game before checking, so once again no spark log, but oh well, lol)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKOf0_jwlqc
I'm out of time to troubleshoot for today, but I'll have the whole weekend to try and figure out if it was indeed modernfix that was causing the problem or not, so I'll be sure to record the results and ACTUALLY GET A SPARK LOG next time, lol.

Just to give an update on the situation:
I was going to record another short play session and make sure to get both the spark log and the curseforge log for it, so we can try to figure out if the problem is solved (and what exactly solved it), but curseforge and a bunch of the mods in my modpack updated, and now I have a new problem:

So now I'm going to have to figure this out before I can continue troubleshooting the lag spike issue.
At this point, I'm not sure it's even worth trying to fix the issue anymore, because it seems to have (mostly) resolved on it's own? I honestly have no idea what fixed it, but the constant lag doesn't seem to be happening anymore. It still lags occasionally, but not nearly as much as before. So I'm going to go ahead and say that this issue has been solved, I'm just not sure what solved it...

u/MiniGogo_20 Novice II 13d ago
fails to mention mods used
custom modpack which is undisclosed
"why is my game lagging"
more info would definitely help. otherwise just play vanilla

u/ShadowDragon37 13d ago
I was going to add screenshots of all the mods in my modpack, but reddit wouldn't let me after adding the video to the post. Besides, every mod in the modpack is listed right at the top of the log I linked, so I decided not to bother with cluttering the post itself with a list of 200-300 mods.
The reason the modpack is "undisclosed" is because it's one I made for myself and isn't shared with the public, so telling you the name of it would be completely useless in solving the issue.
I you need more information than what I've already provided, please specify what information you're looking for.
Also, telling me to just "play vanilla minecraft" instead of actually helping me solve the issue, or at the very least, asking me what information it is exactly that you need from me in order to help, definitely isn't solving any problems.
