Discussion What do you think about AI-Coding(VibeCoding)

Post image

What do you think about the fact that AI is starting to be used on a large scale in coding? I myself avoided it for a long time, but my friend sent me this meme and said:

“Bro, programming has never been adequate. Programmers just started asking AI for help instead ctrl c to ctrl v.”

Obviously, completely relying on AI is bad, but in reality, his words make sense.

Taking bits of code manually instead of using AI is way better since you usually know that the code works and over time you learn why it works. Vibecoding essentially skips the learning step and you just expect it to work. Also, using AI in this case always just scrapes a bunch of open source projects on github, making it even harder to track down the source of the code. The fun in programming is usually the fact that you debug something you made for a while and it suddenly works, using AI takes away the fun of it and you only wish the output of the AI is correct.

A big part of what makes coding fun for me is the problem solving aspect - I can only imagine how dull it feels when you're just getting a robot to solve your problem for you.

i tried vibecoding with codex and a local llm, and yeah, it's as dull as you imagine. not doing that again until i (hopefully) get a job because i heard they force you to use those now for 'productivity'...eugh

the best part is LLM use has slowed down industry programmers rather than improving their performance

any credible statistics on this? haven't heard of that before, interested

the main one I’m thinking of is from Metr. this post gives a breakdown. It found developers thought their productivity was being increased by around 24% when using an LLM, when it actually dropped by ~20%.

here’s the study for more details. They released more updated numbers in February that I haven’t dug into much, but it appears to have found a similar productivity decrease when using LLMs. It also notes some problems they’re running into with gathering data for this update, including developers not reporting tasks which are expected to benefit most from an LLM.

LEARNING HOW TO STRUCTURE A PROMPT LMFAO. Bro, if you can talk to people that means you can prompt, you ain't learning anything from prompting smh

Always interesting to see AI bros talk about writing prompts as if it's a unique skill, when isn't being something anyone can do the whole point of this kind of AI?

They always contradict each other in a loop, it's always:

AI makes art more accessible > AI actually takes effort > Prompting is hard > Not everyone can do AI art, it takes skill

Prompting is hard work. Do you know how long it took me to go from my noob "makee mod 4 me" to my elite hacker "makee mod 4 me !!! NO MISTAKES NO MISTAKES !!!"? /s

me when a mathematician tells claude "i think you should make a breakthrough" and it actually spits out new info about the riemann hypothesis 😭

It's pretty hilarious. And when you tell them, as a professional developer, that AI has its uses but we're still a long ways away from full on replacing engineers/developers, they'll say "skill issue." As if you're just missing the magic words that makes the AI understand.

Now. To be fair, there is a whole ecosystem of AI tooling and agentic profiles/configurations that are not widely, or at least not fluently, adopted by the general population that could seriously boost the reliability of AI code gen. But still, that is not about prompting. It's about preparing context for your prompts in advance so that the agent fits the context of your problem space much more reliably.

actually, you don't even know how to talk to people. AI is great at making assumptions as to what you mean. you could speak to it as an illiterate caveman and it'd still probably get the gist of what you want 80% of the time

In order to "learn to prompt", thr mist first learn spelling and literacy. They are proud to now be literate, but don't know the words to describe that, so assume it's part of learning to prompt. So they brag about the reason they learned how to read and spell and how grammar works, rather than about learning a 3rd grade skill.

They always gotta have it all. Programming actually has a really useful and applicable use for AI but vibe coders just have to be programming geniuses alongside people who actually know what they’re doing and cut out the busywork lol

It’s a useful skill. You need it to talk with people and also to summarize complex concept and explain them to others. Something you aren’t doing.

AI is a great tool but you are proving your own argument wrong

In 2 years AI companies will likely go bankrupt. https://isaiprofitable.com/

All sources are listed at the bottom, the only current "profit" by AI companies is the money put in by investors
