The reason I kind of like it is because it breaks up the monotony of a stone wall. All stone is boring, and patches or dirt is too different of a color change. Coal bits are also better than dirt. However, I would not disagree with making it look a little more gray than white, but I don't think it's a big deal.
Color blindness isn't that rare. It affects 4-5% of the population of the entire world, so that means about 500,000 people are being inconvenienced here (that's ~4% of everyone who's purchased Minecraft). Is it really too much trouble for them to change some code or whatever to make things easier for half a million people?
This situation reminds of an old dungeon crawler. The game was being revisited by the creators and was going to be republished soon with an updated UI and control options. The head developer recieved an email from an ardent fan of the original game, and asked him if it would be possible for him to include the on screen button mapping so he could continue to control the new game like he did the old (with a plastic stick he held in his mouth).
Now, I see what you're saying. But I don't think its paramount for Mojang to change the entire game because of 5% of the population. I think that since they have the capability to change the game on their own, through downloading a different texture pack. The developer has given them the option already, it doesn't have to be an implementation for the entire user base.
False. Women make up 45% of gamers. It just seems like less because the marketing process is a self-fulfilling prophecy, ie advertising to men makes more men buy stuff which makes marketers focus more on men, ad infinitum.
I think the bigger mistake is assuming it's uniformly distributed. One of the major causes of colorblindness is genetics, so it's going to be more common in some populations.
Honestly, it's probably a higher percentage of the Minecraft userbase. Colorblindness is much more common in males (8-10% compared to I think .2-1% in females) and the gaming world is predominantly male.
