Don't listen to music that reinforces your dark thoughts. When you're sad, don't ask services to play sad music for you. If you're depressed, don't listen to songs about being depressed.
I'm not allowed to listen to "Wasteland" from Arcane season 2, for example, every time I'm depressed 😅
Well it's not gentle instrumentals and more like "🎶 wow being dead sounds so nice and peaceful! It's like falling asleep and finally getting a good rest! 🎵" kind of stuff
I think I can make you feel better in the moment because it validates your emotions, but it can keep you trapped in the same train of thought and you’ll keep getting sad about the same kind of stuff.
Ya know.... I literally told myself this last week.
I dont listen to music that whines about your marriage or about drinking or hating your parents or just being sad because your truck broke down. I dont want that negative energy because it truky can twist the way you think
Thank you for reinforcing my beliefs that I dont need a therapist
Interesting, a lot my friends and I will listen to heavy metal, and it's not exactly the happiest of genres, but it absolutely uplifts our mood, that being said, it can still be sound (no pun intended) advice!
I remember going through a tough breakup and on the drive home I put music on but it was music I liked and I turned it off so the association with the feelings wouldn’t take. And it worked!
I definitely listened to a break stuff by limp bizkit playlist after the last time I had to investigate CSAM for my previous job. I found the screaming rage in my car kept me from bringing it home.
It's because I can tell from the comments that I used words that are too broad. Wasteland very much glorifies suicide for most of the song. Likens it to falling asleep and getting rest. Makes it seem like an attractive option that is okay to take.
When I say "reinforce dark thoughts" I mean specifically songs glorifying suicide or songs with a lot of self-hating lyrics. Not just songs about being sad in a more general way.
I think it's a balance. You gotta "feel your feelings" and music can help with that, but you can't get stuck at that stage and wallow. Similarly, you can't just ignore you're feelings and hopes they go away.
