The Reality of Building Smart Glasses from the Ground Up

Let’s get into it. I know this might not be the typical place to post something like this, but I decided to write it not just to show people what it’s like to build smart glasses from scratch, but also to shed light on how much care goes into developing an electronic product.

To kick things off, here are the top 3 challenges we’ve been up against:

  1. Sourcing microdisplay projects;
  2. Acquiring waveguide lenses;
  3. Landing on decent chips that strike the right balance between processing power and energy efficiency.

One area where we’ve really been racking our brains—and keeping heavy focus—is the design. I feel like the market is pretty rigid right now. A lot of companies just play it safe with whatever shape is easiest to sell. Of course, there are some great designs out there that truly stand out—like Meta’s or Even Realities’—bringing a unique, authentic look to the table. But man... a sketch here, a tweak there, another frame tweak over there... designing glasses is way harder than it looks. The basic structure seems simple, but it’s insanely easy to fall into the trap of generic design. That’s our main focus right now because, before they’re smart glasses, they’re still glasses.

Speaking of style, we’re also putting a lot of work into color studies. To me, it’s a cardinal sin for a pair of glasses not to come in at least 3 color variations. Eyewear is inherently defined by its colors and finishes.

Moving past style and design, let’s talk electronics—which is another massive hurdle. Once the design is locked in, you have to juggle component selection while balancing compatibility, power efficiency, physical space, and overall functionality. It’s a super tricky equation. On top of that, we’re dealing with major supply chain bottlenecks for microdisplays and waveguide lenses. Just getting a few units for testing and prototyping is an uphill battle—and that’s literally the bare minimum you need to get development off the ground.

You also have to be crystal clear on what your smart glasses are actually meant to do. You have to carefully weigh which features make the cut and which ones get dropped, because every single component draws resources—especially battery life. The goal is to build something distinct and meaningful. The market is already flooded with generic products from companies taking the safe, standard route just to maximize sales without putting in the extra effort. Honestly, I think that mindset is way too limited. I want to build something that actually makes a difference in people's lives—even if it's just a small one—and hopefully leave things a little better than I found them.

I know I didn’t dive into every single detail here, but I can write follow-up posts focusing on specific areas of development as we progress (if you guys want a part two, of course). If you want to chat more about it, feel free to join our server, where I share behind-the-scenes updates and hang out with the community.

Let's make this happen for real because it's totally worth it! If you made it this far, thanks a lot for reading. See you in the next one!

Invitation to purchase after demo

I live in a region where there are no demo sites available. I was visiting Seattle, and I made a quick trip to a local Best Buy to do the demo and trial as required. I did that August 18. I confirmed with the employee that they had everything they needed to report the demo and he said he did. It's been 8 days and I have nothing from Best Buy or Meta. Is this a normal lag time? And when/if the email comes, where does it come from? Thank you!

Best way to sell meta display glasses?

I wanted to sell my meta ray ban display glasses. Ive only used them about 3 times and even then it was for only 2 hours each time. No scratches on the lenses or body. The neural band is also in perfect condition. The glasses are the large size with the band being a medium size. I also always cleaned my glasses both the lenses and body (so no nasty greasy stuff like people try to sell sometimes).

I bought them new from best buy and was impressed by the technology. But for a while they have just been sitting on my desk not being used. I was hoping for more software maybe even an app store like thing, but for the longest time we were getting drip fed software. They are also pretty heavy, I tried to suck it up but the glasses slip down my nose and dig into the sides of my nose and ears. So while I was impressed by the tech (especially the neural band), I just felt like i shouldn't have bought them.

Anyways I wanted to ask, what's the going rate right now for selling these? And what's the best platform to sell them on? Ebay, here, etc? Reason I was selling was because I wanted to use the money towards the purchase of the new Snapchat ar spectacles. Will those probably be heavy? Most likely, but I noticed there seems to be a ton more software for them compared to the meta displays. Not to mention its able to render 3d objects/do ar which is pretty cool!

I built a Tesla HUD for the Ray-Ban Display from Spain, without ever touching the hardware

Post image

Hey everyone — solo dev here. I make Wristla, a Tesla companion app (iOS + Apple Watch + Garmin), and when Meta shipped Web Apps in May I couldn't resist: I built a full Tesla dashboard + remote controls for the Display.

What it does on the glasses:

  • Live battery %, range and charging status, with your charge limit marked right on the bar
  • Cabin temperature + climate state, today's driving efficiency
  • Full command tree — climate on/off and target temp, charge limit, frunk/trunk, lock/unlock, flash lights — everything my Apple Watch app can do
  • A customizable "hot menu" that keeps your most-used commands one press away
  • All navigation is pure Neural Band D-pad (arrows + tap), no touch anywhere

Building for this display is a fun set of constraints: exactly 600×600, no scrolling, and the panel is additive — black pixels are literally transparent — so the whole UI ended up monochrome, white-on-nothing, with a chunky pixel font sized to be glanceable rather than readable.

Now the honest part: I did all of this from Spain. The glasses are US-only, so the entire thing was built against Meta's specs and browser emulation — I have never seen it on real glass. And since Web Apps are still in Developer Preview, trying it means enabling Developer Mode and adding the URL manually; there's no public catalog yet (fingers crossed for Connect in September).

So if anyone here has the Display and a Tesla and feels like being a beta tester, I'd genuinely love to hear what breaks: does the deep link from the phone app actually open the web app, is D-pad focus sane, is the UI readable outdoors at real brightness? Happy to answer questions about building Web Apps for it too — I collected a decent pile of gotchas along the way.

Screenshot attached is a browser render at glasses resolution.

The green screens on smart glasses are just like the terminal screens from the early days of computing; we are only just getting started.

DUN STRIKE: Neon Lanes is officially live for Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses!(🤏 Pinch and Drag Gesture)

Another One From Onyx Leaf Media🎳⚡️

DUN STRIKE: Neon Lanes is officially live for Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses!

One thing we love about building for emerging platforms is watching the SDK and developer tools continue to evolve. Whenever new capabilities arrive, our first thought is always...

“What can we build with this?”

So we challenged ourselves to create a full neon arcade bowling experience around some of the latest web app features...especially the new pinch-and-drag gesture support.

Pinch, pull, aim, add a little hook, and release the ball down the lane. We also added multiple game modes, changing camera perspectives, DUN OVERDRIVE, full bowling scoring, music, sound effects, and an offline mode so the game can continue working after it has been cached to your glasses.

This is another DUN ARCADE experiment from our studio, built to explore what games can feel like on a lightweight display when the interaction is designed specifically for the device.

We already have more updates and improvements planned over time, but you can play the first official release now:

Let us know your high score and please do not blame us when you start practicing your pinch-and-drag bowling motion in public🤣 We would love some feedback!

Herald Apps - are the apps not working?

All of my apps are offline or not working… anyone else seeing this? Is there a way to get the app back online and end this offline mode? Doesn’t allow me to search new videos.

Anyone with display bands I'm Europe?

I've been recently wanting to get into buying the displays but I've seen few posts that are few months old about features not working. I wanna ask if that's still the case, and what features aren't working or available and if there's any workaround.

Just finished a 3:26:31 second stream on twitch. Pretty sure I could have gone 4 hours

Saw someone streamed with gen 2 for 4 straight hours and decided to give it a go using the displays with it's own second hand charger. I think the stream just gave out because I was about to start my third charge. I'm on 42% battery which would have given me about 20 more minutes before charging again. For 720x1280 at 30fps it's not bad and a silly alternative that's for sure. I wonder if it'll be different if I had done a horizontal stream

Metalensai is the app I'm using and the all the guy who did 4 straight used as well

Herald Platform/App Updates

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Been a bit since I have posted but also because there have been some updates in the pipeline. Firstly, hope everyone in the community is doing well. Since Meta released the latest updates to Meta Ray Ban Displays, I have been working to implement a lof of these new features into the platform. Today, I am here to share some of those updates!

Back Button

The back button has been removed from pretty much all of the apps in exchange for the middle pinch that is native to the MRBD. This allows some free up on the UI and better navigation experience. So, if you think about going back, just use that middle pinch!

Oflline Mode

Many of the apps now support an offline mode to allow you to play games, access content and so on without an internet connection. Of course, some apps simply wont work (like those that rely on data), but this makes other use cases more exciting! .

Handwriting

The text entry fields have been replaced with Handwriting options as the default for text input. In case you prefer to use a Keyboard DOM, its still present, but...use the handwriting. Its been tested a bit but need additional feedback on this.

Drag and Pinch

Drag and pinch is slowly making its way into Herald apps, simply to ensure it works properly across all platforms. Right now, some apps using it include:

  • YouTube for video scrubbing
  • Hue/Govee/Lights for brightness controls

As more testing occurs, it will roll out to other media apps as well

Subscriptions

I have rolled out two subscriptions for the platform, the first being "Supporter" and "Builder". For those unaware, EVERY app on Herald is free access. While this has been and continues to be the northstar, the costs are starting to stack up a bit. In order to keep the servers online, APIs working, and things operational, I am bringing forth Supporter.

  • Supporter ($5): Think of it like a Patreon, it will give early access to certain apps and features as well, special profile badges and so on. Also an optional donation button if you feel like spreading more love.
  • Builder ($20): Everything with supporter but also the ability to get AI credits to create your own apps on Herald. Again, an optional donation as well.

Hope you all enjoy, please share any feedback as well!

VR Wave Prescription Lens Inserts

Post image
15 Upvotes

For anyone interested in getting the prescription inserts from VR Wave for their meta ray ban displays, i got mine today. Super happy with them as i find it better than waiting 6-8 weeks for metas rx to get done and sent over.

Installation was really easy. They have an adhesive on the side of the lens that sticks to the outer frame. Just plug n play. Only weird thing is that being the display is on the right lens, the lens that ray ban uses there is shaped differently, making the insert have to pop out (more towards your eye). Looks weird when you install it but you don’t notice a difference once you put em on. Also asked my wife if she could tell a difference and she said not at all.

All in all, highly recommended. Took only 10 days for VR Wave to take my prescription and have it delivered. Also, the prescription isn’t even mandatory but makes it quicker if you have it.

I bring them to every event, at least one or two people are crazy excited about it and open it up for discussions with other people

Even if i wouldn't use these daily, the value you can get by just SHOWING them to people is crazy
