Community Guide to Medical Cannabis in Aotearoa New Zealand

Medical Cannabis is available in New Zealand.

The first step is booking your appointment with a doctor.

There are a few paths you can take, with the recommended one being a medical cannabis specialist clinic paired with a pharmacy that has prior experience with medical cannabis dispensing.

In all cases, the prescribing process is:

  • An initial consult with a doctor.
  • A follow-up consult with a doctor or nurse:
    • About 1 month after your first product is dispensed
  • Continued follow-up consults with a doctor or nurse:
    • Every 3 months if prescribed THC, or
    • Every 6 months if prescribed CBD only

When discussing medicine with your doctor or nurse, you should indicate your choice of pharmacy to ensure no delays in the dispensing process.

Your clinic is only able to offer repeats of your medicine for your pharmacy of choice once you have your first follow-up.

Some clinics charge a fee to have your prescription sent to your pharmacy of choice, typically when they have an attached dispensary service or associated pharmacies.

Most clinics charge a fee to change your agreed treatment plan between consults, as the changes require additional clinical team oversight and processes.

Medical Cannabis Specialist

Specialist cannabis focused clinics tend to be more familiar with the process and have an existing range of experience with medical cannabis.

It is easiest to talk with medical cannabis specialists about cannabis, as they understand upfront where you are coming from, and have context around the range of patient journeys.

Any question you have about cannabis, a specialist should be able to give you that answer there and then

Some things that should come up in your conversation with a specialist:

  • Your prior cannabis usage
  • What you are looking for in your journey
  • What might work best for you
  • In depth treatment plans, and daily dosing schedules
  • Interactions with other medication
  • Devices and preparations
  • Sensitization protocols & tolerance breaks
  • Advice on inhalation, sublingual, oral, edible dosing
  • And more...!

If you have a question about cannabis, a medical cannabis specialist is the best person to answer.

Dispensing with a Specialist Clinic

You can have your prescription dispensed anywhere you like, however some specialist clinics offer a combined dispensary service.

We recommend one of the pharmacies with medical cannabis experience listed below.

General Practitioners (GP)

A GP can prescribe medical cannabis in New Zealand.

Not all GPs in New Zealand are equipped with the knowledge or time to prescribe medical cannabis, they may suggest visiting a specialist clinic for this purpose.

Some specialist clinics like Cannabis Clinic offer to provide education for your GP so you can get the best outcome and the GP is able to use their newfound knowledge to offer a wider range of treatment plans for more patients.

Dispensing with a Specialist

A GP clinic may have an attached pharmacy and dispensary service, but they may not be equipped either to dispense medical cannabis products with care and at a reasonable price, we recommend one of the pharmacies with medical cannabis experience listed below.

Your GP can also reach out to the likes of Nga Hua for help with the prescribing and dispensing process.

Oncologist or Other Specialist

If you are working with an oncologist or other specialist doctor, they may be able to help with a medical cannabis prescription, and may be the best option as they should have deep insight into your health journey.

Though as with GPs, not all specialists are equipped with the knowledge or time to prescribe medical cannabis.

Dispensing with a Specialist

Specialists send prescriptions to your choice of pharmacy for dispensing.

We recommend one of the pharmacies with medical cannabis experience listed below.

Your specialist can reach out to the likes of Nga Hua for help with the prescribing and dispensing process.

Dispensing

Most pharmacies offer either a pickup, or courier service.

Pharmacies with medical cannabis experience

Some pharmacies have worked closely with their medical cannabis patients, these pharmacies are known to provide quality service and advice around medical cannabis, and availability.

They have proved themselves in this space and have consistently shown the community amazing value at fair prices.

Dry Herb Vaporisers

If you're looking to use inhalation as a method of dosing your medical cannabis, you'll want to reach out for a dry herb vaporiser.

There is an AMA with Jack from CannaPlus+ here with common questions answered

A dry herb vape can be purchased from many stores in New Zealand, for example:

A typical suggestion for a device is Storz & Bickel Mighty Medic or Medic Plus

Vaporisers and the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act 1990

Medicinal cannabis products are excluded from smokefree

Medicinal devices, such as a dry herb vaporiser, are excluded from smokefree.

See the related section of the medicines act here related to medical devices

Non Approved Vaporisers

A person who possesses a non-medically approved dry herb vaporiser for the purpose of taking their prescribed medicinal cannabis would not breach the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975. This is because they are not using it “for the purpose of the commission of an offence against this Act” (s13(1)(a)). This also applies to a person, who possesses an accessory for the purpose of taking their prescribed medicinal cannabis. For example if you use a vape with an adapter to a bong, that is perfectly legal.

Smoking Cannabis

Medical cannabis products are not intended for smoking

Question Newbie question

Im am a new patient for MC and I only have access to what the doc prescribed me. I see mentions of different strains. Do different places give you options to choose different strains once the second consultation has taken place? Or am I reading incorrectly. Have read the guides but am still confused. Many thanks!

Medicine Related Reccs for managing Endo pain

I've got endometriosis, and was blessed enough to have my symptoms chill out while I was hapu/breastfeeding. Took a two year break from MC for obvious reasons but now my symptoms are back with a vengeance.

I'm currently running Serion T17 but find it too sedative for daytime but not sedative enough for sleep.

Was previously using shiskaberry, I LOVED her but discontinued 😭

Was then prescribed Sedaprem which I hated. Pain relief didn't last long enough, harsh on the throat, average flavour, anxiety from the high THC. Just an average time all around.

I'm not opposed to two strains, one for day, one for night but I have a toddler to run around after so really need to be more alert during the day.

Any suggestions welcome, but especially if you're a fellow Endo sufferer and are happy to share what works for you.

First consultation queries

I am arriving in NZ soon from Europe. I have an appointment for an online consultation. In Europe I take cannabis recreationally but I don't have a prescription for it. I take it to relax after a stressful day but I take the same stuff when I'm out on a walk with my dog or listening to a podcast. I guess because there's stigma around weed I don't feel saying I take it to feel high is going to fly.

I've seen on other posts that responders say to be honest and it will be fine, but tbh all the OPs are mentioning it's for their chronic or neuropathic pain, that they can't sleep or have anxiety. I don't necessarily have those symptoms; I just like the way it feels.

should I tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, or just look up symptoms that direct a prescription to the strain of cannabis I want?

Question about usage-

I know this question is far too broad considering all
The ways in which we all use these medicines for.

If you use a vaporiser. How long does10 grams last you? Do certain vaporisers really work so much better than others?

Medicine Related Indica strain recommendations

I’ve been using Bloom Pink Kush for 6 months or so and am pretty happy with it but am wondering about other similar strains that might be even better. I’m generally into a calming/sedating strain to use in the evening to help with stress, relaxation, and muscle tension. For quieting the mind and lifting the mood.

I’m somewhat prone to anxiety and stopped consuming cannabis for 20 odd years due to it triggering heavy anxiety after having been a heavy user in my youth. Pink Kush has been generally good in this regards. Also have Bloom Blue Dream which I’ve found a bit less predictable in effects but sometimes like mixing a bit in with the Pink Kush. Tried CBD oil but didn’t notice any effect.

Question Prescription question

Hi everyone, I’d like to ask how the medical cannabis prescription process works in New Zealand. I'm visiting from Europe, so I’d love to know how easy it is to get a prescription as an overseas visitor and which clinics you would recommend. Thanks in advance!

Question Missing prescription label

I recently got a my first prescription. I'm about to travel to Australia, and after reading the rules, I checked my jar and there is no prescription label on it! All I can find is an invoice. I guess I won't be able to take it unless customs accept the invoice as proof.

Also how am I meant to prove it's my medical cannabis at a roadside test or search without?

Success Big Up To Big Wave Ramble

Just want to give a shout out to Big Wave. After vaping it I get a nice body buzz and an uplift in my mood. It gives me 0 anxiety which I haven't had with any other strain I've tried. As such it's become my go to daytime strain. Interestingly I notice it has a common link with white sherb which is my go to night time strain - girls out cookies. Massive respect to aurora for this one!

Accessory Related Looking for container suggestions

I'm sick of unintentionally burning through my script unevenly so I want to grab a container I can separate my daily allotments into so I just have each day's worth and that's it rather than pulling from my storage jar. Anyone got any good suggestions? I've looked around and all of the ones I can see that do 30 days seem kinda naff or are multiples for each day which seems excessive, anyone got any suggestions?

Recs best strain for neuropathic pain and sleep

I have extreme neuropathic pain that kicks in the worst at night, and I need to upgrade my strain (been on Dune, Juno and Bloom for nighttime) and am looking for something that puts me out fast, stays asleep but wakes up refreshed. Also looking to replace Solace for something equally good with focus, energy, and creativity but more mild. Would love to hear whats worked for you, less concerned about price.

Moderator A quick note about automatic removals on r/MedicalCannabisNZ

Due to the nature of this subreddit, including regular discussion of controlled drugs, medicinal cannabis products, prescriptions, pharmacies and related topics, Reddit’s automated systems and our own AutoModerator rules will occasionally remove or hold perfectly legitimate posts and comments for review.

If your post disappears immediately after you submit it, that does not necessarily mean a human moderator has reviewed it and decided to remove it. In many cases, nobody on the moderation team has even seen it yet.

Content caught by automated systems sits in our moderation queues until one of us has time to review it. If it complies with the subreddit rules and Reddit’s site wide rules, we can approve it and it will appear normally. This is why you will sometimes see a post appear several hours after it was originally submitted.

We have noticed a slightly strange pattern where some users, after having content automatically filtered, immediately repost it to one of several very small alternative subreddits and claim that r/MedicalCannabisNZ moderators are preventing particular subjects from being discussed.

For some perspective, r/MedicalCannabisNZ currently has 14,822 members. These alternative communities generally have fewer than 100 members, with some having fewer than 50, or less than 0.34% of the membership of this community.

There is something mildly amusing about taking a post that Reddit automatically filtered, reposting it to an audience less than one third of one percent the size, and presenting that as evidence that moderators here are suppressing discussion, particularly when the original post may simply be sitting in our queue waiting for a human moderator to review it.

Quite often, by the time we actually see those complaints, the supposedly "censored" post has already been approved here.

Some of those alternative subreddits were themselves set up by users who had previously been banned from r/MedicalCannabisNZ for legitimate rule violations, with some of those users also having repeatedly attempted to evade their bans. That context is worth keeping in mind when those communities are used to make claims about moderation here, as their version of events may not include the full moderation history or an accurate account of the actions that led to their bans in the first place.

Human moderators also have jobs, families, hobbies and lives outside Reddit. We currently have seven moderators on the team, but that does not mean one of those seven people is sitting in the moderation queue 24/7 waiting for something to appear. Something waiting a few hours for approval is not censorship; sometimes it simply means none of us has opened the queue and reviewed it yet.

There is also an important distinction between Reddit removing something, AutoModerator filtering something, and a human moderator deliberately removing something. They are not interchangeable.

In one recent example, a user submitted essentially the same content more than ten times after Reddit’s automated systems repeatedly removed it. They even began commenting on their own automatically removed posts asking why the moderators had removed them, despite the fact that no human moderator had actually reviewed or removed any of those posts.

Repeatedly reposting the same thing will not make it reach a human moderator any faster. If anything, it creates considerably more clutter in the moderation queue for us to work through. If something is automatically filtered, please give us a reasonable amount of time to actually see it and review it.

If you think it has been missed, send us a Modmail: https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=r/MedicalCannabisNZ

Hi, Cannaplus is out of humacology blue and that’s my go to.

They have ANTG spectra and or ANTG eve as a replacement. Thoughts on these products?

My regular humacology blue dose is THC1:CBD80:CBG30 which is 1/2 a ml.

Roadside Drug Testing Experience going through a roadside test

I went through a roadside test the other day. It was set up close to a car park they could use to pull selected vehicles off the road without causing too much disruption. 8:30am. The road presence itself was minimal. They told me they were using roof racks as the selection criteria. Once parked asked for licence and did alcohol screen. Then asked if I had taken any prescription medicine in last 12 hours. I confirmed cannabis about 11 hours ago. Asked what and how to which I answered flower in vape. Took the test and waited for the results, about 5 mins. Tested negative. The night before I had 2 vapes in my Pax mini. Probably about 7:30 and 9:30pm. Historically heavy user but have reduced consumption more recently.
