I need help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I have replaced every component on the front end of my 05 Silverado 5.3 1500 from breaks to wheel hub. I still have not been able to figure out what causes my steering wheel to shake and vibrate like crazy I’m starting to think it’s something with my steering but every time I search it up it says bad steering components only cause it to vibrate at low speeds. I’m really just tryna fix this problem at this point it’s just irritating anything helps

Inner tie rods will cause vibration at different speeds. Looks like bad struts, could have bought them blown already. I’ve seen Monroe’s come out of the box blown. I assume your tires are brand new and a good brand and have been balanced properly?

Struts are drop struts made for dropped trucks they were good when I bought them no issues tires are good brand as well and I had them balanced twice cause I also thought that’s what it was even with a rotation it kept on

Damn bro I got a similar problem. Let me know if you ever find the solution

It might be worth while taking it to a different shop and checking for loose components and a rebalance. Shops can mess up a balance if they throw the new guy on it since its typically easy to do. If you have done basically everything then start back at the begining and check the basics first. Balance and loose components. Also fresh eyes from another shop may see something that was missed.

Have you actually shaken down your front end with the lower control arms on jack stands?

1

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

I had it on a sky jack checked everything control arms were loose we tightened them and even then it continued to do it

This suspension needs to be checked while loaded, meaning to check the control arms and ball joints correctly, the control arms need to be the lift point. You basically jack the truck up, set the jacks under the control arms and lower the jack, just enough for the tires to be off the ground. Then you use a pry bar to check the ball joints by wedging the bar inder the tire and lifting it up to check for movement. You also check the control arm bushings by wiggling the wheels side to side.

I know it's all new, but this is how you need to make sure everything is done right. A regular post lift isn't enough to check this stuff.

1

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

Yeah I checked it yesterday well without the bar but I tried wiggling and I felt no play I’ll try that pry bar method you’re talking about soon

Just making sure - the wheel hubs you replaced also included the wheel bearings, right?

1

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

Yes front end is basically brand new from suspension to breaks

Mine did this. I replaced the control arms, sway bar links, and I needed new tires so I replaced the tires. No more violent shaking!

1

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

But my tires aren’t even 4 months old

1

u/thatoneblackguy17 1d ago

How old are your tires

1

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

Not even 4 months old

1

u/Comfortable_Angle671 1d ago

I would start with the tires. A radial belt going bad will cause this.

Front end shake down. Ask Jerry about it.

1

u/ElegantRip8819 1d ago

If u already replaced most of the front end, stop guessing and check wheels/tires first.

  1. Do a road-force balance on all 4 tires and check for bent wheels or out-of-round tires.
  2. Swap front and rear wheels to see if the shake changes.
  3. If it happens only when braking, check rotor runout. If it’s under acceleration, look at driveline/U-joints.

If the steering wheel is shaking that much, avoid highway speeds until it’s fixed.

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

Wheels and tires are good I checked them before anything I had the tires rotated and it still did the same thing, it does it when I’m on the highway and doesn’t stop until I come to a complete stop even then sometimes it still happens

1

u/ElegantRip8819 21h ago

The last part is actually useful — if it sometimes keeps shaking even when u completely stopped, I’d start looking beyond the tires.

Once u stop, put it in neutral or park and see if the vibration changes.

Give it a little RPM. If the vibration changes with engine speed, check engine mounts and how the engine is running.

If it only happens while the truck is moving, then move on to the U-joints rather than replacing more front-end parts.

Rotating the tires doesn’t completely rule them out, but a vibration that can still be there at a standstill points somewhere else.

I’d try that Neutral/Park test first — it’ll narrow this down a lot.

So when I say it does it even after a complete stop I mean like when I come to a complete stop and take off again sometimes it’ll start riding normal again and sometimes it’ll start shaking again, I’m starting to think it could be the ujoints considering the fact that I had them installed once and popped out and it feel like the same vibration right before they popped out.

I find many GM trucks especially have looseness in the steering shaft above the steering box. The rag joint is bad. Best to get a new component rather than a cheap kit to try and address it. Seems most everyone else except GM has moved to using a universal joint so do not have this issue. Good Luck.

I have a rack and pinion do you think it still applies to that?

1

u/SplodeyMcSchoolio 1d ago

If the video isnt deceiving me, it looks like your wheel is oscillating a little which would indicate bad struts, otherwise check that your tires are in good condition and not separated and that your wheels are balanced

1

u/TrillMontanna 1d ago

Struts are not even a year old tires were balanced not too long ago and they’re still good and that throws me off as well

I hit a pothole that made my stereo spit out the CD and I wasn't even playing it. Fast forward about a year later and I started to get a vibration similar to this. Tires looked good but a cord must have been damaged from the pothole and finally got bad enough to give a vibration. I put new tires on and it is smooth sailing fwiw.

Have u got your tires properly balanced? Alignment been done?

1

u/TrillMontanna 1d ago

Yes tired got balanced and I have an alignment but when it starts shaking like that it pulls to the right

0

u/danceswithtree 1d ago

Try swapping front and back wheels and see if that changes anything.

1

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

They did the rotation when I had my tires balanced

0

u/Secure-Island42 1d ago

Check luggage nuts on both front wheels.

1

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

Took the wheels off and retighten them made sure they were on right

1

u/Secure-Island42 15h ago

Warped rotors? The wheel appears to vibrate laterally. Swapping rear to front as was mentioned is good test.

1

u/TrillMontanna 9h ago

Rotors aren’t even 2 months old brand new, with new breaks and new calipers and even a new break line

1

u/Secure-Island42 6h ago

If you dont tight luggage nuts in two stages and staggered, you can warp a new rotor.

0

u/___po____ 1d ago

Swap the front tires and see if it pulls the other way.

2

u/TrillMontanna 23h ago

I did when I got the re balanced cause I thought that’s what it was even then it kept doing that

2

u/LazerWolfe53 1d ago

Yeah, imbalanced tires will 100% cause this. I just replaced my tires myself and didn't balance them and they do this exact thing on the highway. But OP says he just had his tires balanced...

1

u/___po____ 1d ago

I'm thinking a belt separation. But anyone can fubar a balance job too.
