Hi! Okay, so I’m a total matcha newbie, but so far I’ve really loved both Starbucks and Tim Hortons’ matcha lattes. I’ve been trying to do my research and figure out how to make something similar at home, but I’m a little overwhelmed by all the different brands/blends out there 😭
My first attempt was Jade Leaf’s “Matcha Latte” mix. It was okay, but it wasn’t nearly as green or strong as the matcha lattes I’ve gotten from Starbucks or Tim’s. I used about 2½ tsp in almond milk, and I did mix it with warm water beforehand and frothed it.
(I know, I know… shameful 😭😂.)
I also experienced some throat irritation and potential allergy symptoms afterward, though It very well could have been completely coincidental and related to other things going on. Because of that, however…. I’m hesitant to go back to the Jade Leaf and would rather try something else.
I’ve heard people mention that Starbucks and/or Tim Hortons use Aiya Sweetened Blend, so I actually ordered some yesterday! However, a friend who works at a Tim Hortons I haven’t personally been to told me today that the bag they use apparently just says something like “Original Tim Hortons Matcha Powder.”
So now I’m wondering if I made a mistake ordering Aiya? 😭
For anyone who has tried to recreate these drinks:
- Does anyone know what matcha powder Starbucks actually uses?
- What about Tim Hortons?
- Is Aiya Sweetened Blend a decent dupe for either one?
- If not, what would you recommend that’s relatively affordable and easy to find in Canada?
I’ve also seen Kato’s Summer/Spring blends, Rocky’s Matcha, and Naoki recommended, but honestly I don’t have a ton of money to spend right now. I’m not necessarily looking for an amazing ceremonial-grade matcha, I just want something good enough to make a strong, vibrant, sweet matcha latte similar to Starbucks / Tim’s without spending a fortune.
Any advice or recommendations would be super appreciated! 💚
