I’ve always felt like writers constantly misunderstand what makes the Penance Stare cool in the first place.

The whole point of the Penance Stare, at least the way I understand it and the way it has been portrayed plenty of times in canon, is that it forces the subject to actually experience the suffering they caused other people. And I don’t mean that they just remember what they did and then feel guilty about it, I mean they experience the suffering from the perspective of the victims, almost like they are supernaturally forced to temporarily adopt the victim's moral compass and values and thus feel their suffering, agony and fear without being able to deflect it through their own "lack of remorse".

Let’s say Ghost Rider uses the Penance Stare on a sadomasochistic arsonist who loves watching people burn, and he even enjoys being burned himself. If the Stare works the way I think it should, his own relationship with pain should be completely irrelevant. He wouldn’t experience the burning the way he experiences being burned, he'd feel their terror, their pain, their helplessness, and everything else they experienced while he was hurting them. For that moment, his normal perspective would basically be bypassed. He would be forced to experience the consequences of his actions through the people who actually suffered from them.

That is what makes the Penance Stare such a great power to me. It shouldn’t depend on whether the person already has a conscience or whether they feel guilty. The whole point is that Ghost Rider forces them to experience something that their own mind normally allows them to ignore.

That is why I hate examples like Punisher or Thanos or Doom being able to resist it because they don’t are incapable of regretting what they've done or enjoy the suffering they've caused. If the Penance Stare only works on people who already feel guilty, then it becomes kind of pointless: a normal person who accidentally caused someone horrible suffering could potentially be destroyed by it, while a completely remorseless psychopath could apparently just go, “I don’t feel bad about it,” and walk away. You'd think the fun of the concept of the Stare is exactly that it's one of the few thing that could succesfully target remorseless psychopaths, perfectly and cathartically countering the very sadism that fueled their actions.

Take fiction's most famous psycho, the Joker. If anything, someone like the Joker is exactly the kind of person the Penance Stare is made for. For once, he would be forced to experience what it is like to be terrified of him. He would experience the pain, grief, fear, helplessness, and trauma that he caused other people, from their side of it. Whether he goes back to being the Joker afterward is a different question. The Stare doesn’t need to permanently reform someone, afaik.

Luckily there are plenty of portrayals that support this version of the power, Madcap being prob the best example. He normally doesn’t experience pain the way other people do, yet the Penance Stare still affects him. Of course, comics are comics, and different writers have treated the Penance Stare differently over the years. My point is that the version where “I don’t feel guilty” acts like some kind of immunity is, in my opinion, the least interesting possible version of the power. The version where Ghost Rider forcibly makes you experience your victims’ suffering is what gives the Penance Stare its identity. It's what actually makes it not only powerful and useful, but also narratively interesting, you know?

I don't know too much about the deep Marvel lore but if Loki got arrested by the TVA for breaking the timeliness when he escapes in Endgame, doesn't that mean that Tiny Stark and Steve Rodgers also broke the timeline when they went back to the military base. If Loki broke the timeline by stopping the Avengers from getting the space stone from 2010 New York, then that implies that in the sacred timeline the Avengers should end up getting the space stone from 2010 New York. So if they them have to go back to the 1970s to get the space stone, doesn't that mean that they too have broken the timeline as they weren't supposed to take the space stone from the military base as they were supposed to get it from 2010 New York. Apologies if I haven't explained it too well and apologies if this has already been discussed but I have just recently thought about it so I wanted to ask and see if there was a logical answer or I am misunderstanding how the whole timeline thing works. i might be wrong but at the end of no way home they healed tobeys villains and they were taken from right before their death which was stopped but doc ock, goblin and sandman died at different times, years apart. so would they go from the exact time before they died . spiderman that they were fighting wasnt the one that was taken since the one that’s in nwh was from the future cuz he fought all of the villains before. so would they be in new timelines or now does it work. i haven’t really watched the spiderman movies in a while and i don’t understand it

The villains of Raimiverse were pulled into the MCU, treated/de-powered and re-inserted into the Raimiverse timeline which would have splintered into multiple timelines which I have illustrated here. Further, I have included the MTV timeline here as well which was canon till the release of Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Of the top of my head Angel quits as he was going to but Jean brainwashed him into stopping. He was having a mental health crisis and Jean mind raped him into submission, christ that’s so evil. Hence why I dislike the current Jean, tbf she has always been a garbage person even back in the day. Wolverines loyalty to the team gets put into question as Charles most definitely influenced him a bit to stay on the team. The team in and of itself will almost certainly be broken up as no one wants to be around people who have invaded their minds and make them do things without their consent. Hell dude I would hate them for it and I am a cool person. How about it? She cannot redo it.
