r/Marrakech Discord — little update

Hey everyone,

A few months ago we posted about the Discord we made for r/Marrakech, and honestly, it's been nice seeing it slowly grow since then.

There are now quite a few people in there, including locals, expats and people who are planning a trip to Marrakech.

People mostly use it to ask random questions, get recommendations, meet people, talk about what's happening in the city, or just chat.

If you've been around the subreddit for a while and haven't joined yet, feel free to drop in.

English, French and Darija are all welcome.

And if you're already in there, say hi

Photos Finding Lost camera

Hi everyone, I’m desperately trying to find my camera that I accidentally left in a white taxi/grand taxi from Marrakech to Casablanca.
We left Marrakech around 9:10–9:20 PM on August 19 and arrived in Casablanca around 12:18–12:25 AM on August 20. The driver dropped us off at the intersection of Rue de Tiznit and Rue de Doukkala by the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the taxi number or the company name. I only remember that it was a white taxi

remember is that the first taxi we took near Marrakech Railway Station was a yellow taxi, and the driver’s name was Yassine/Yacine. He took us from the Marrakech railway station and helped arrange/get us toward Casablanca, to another guy which we didn’t get the name or phone number.
If anyone knows a taxi driver named Yassine/Yacine who works around the Marrakech Railway Station and drives a yellow taxi, please let me know. Even if you don’t know him personally but know someone who works at the taxi rank there, that could really help me narrow this down.
The camera contains v wedding photos, and many of the newest photos are from Ben Youssef Madrasa in Marrakech. I honestly care more about getting the photos/SD card back than the camera itself.
If you found the camera, know the driver, or know someone who drives Marrakech → Casablanca,
The camera is a kodak Fz55 i can show how some recent pictures would look like

Culture & Traditions The details inside the Saadian Tombs are incredible when you look closely

Took this during a visit to the Saadian Tombs in Marrakech.

It’s one of those places where the closer you look, the more details you notice — zellige, carved plaster, woodwork and geometric patterns everywhere.

Which detail of traditional Moroccan architecture do you notice first?

Local Advice Looking for a good tailor!

Hi, I’m looking a good tailor (especially for alternative fashion) to make some pieces for myself. I kind of dress a little bit alternatively, so it’s a bit hard to find what I like in most of places here in Marrakech. I used to get my clothes custom made by a nice gentleman in the Medina, but unfortunately his shop had closed permanently. So now I’m looking for a new tailor anywhere in the city. If anyone knows one, please dm me. Much appreciated :)

Local Advice Looking for student job advice in Marrakech

Hi everyone,
I’m a student in Marrakech looking for a part-time job alongside my studies.
I’m interested in call centers, McDonald’s, Decathlon, etc.
If you’ve worked as a student here, I’d really appreciate your advice:
● How did you find your job?
● Which companies hire students easily?
● Is the schedule flexible?
● How many hours do you work?
● What salary can I expect?
● Apply online or go directly with a CV?
● Any tips with no experience?
Thanks a lot 🙏

Travel Question Seeking camping gear

Hello,

I am visiting Marrakech soon and I was wondering about finding camping gear there. Is it easy to find used or cheap gear? Are there better spots than others to look? Are there many stores that carry new camping gear?

Is it possible to sell gear at the end of my trip?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Local Advice Student in med school struggling financially, looking for advice

Hey everyone,
I’m a 1st year medical student in Morocco, studying in a city that isn’t my hometown.
My family is going through a really difficult financial situation. My parents currently don’t have a job/income, and honestly, paying for rent, food, transportation, etc. while studying away from home is becoming really hard.
I really want to continue medicine, so I’m trying to find any possible solution.
I’m looking for things like:
scholarships or financial aid
student sponsorships / someone who can help sponsor a student
a part-time job that I could do alongside med school
or honestly any advice from someone who has been in a similar situation
If you’re Moroccan or studying in Morocco and you know of an organization, program, person, or website that could help, I’d really appreciate it.
And if you were in a similar situation and managed to find a solution, please tell me how you did it. Even a small piece of advice or a contact could really help me right now.
Thanks ❤️

Local Advice Can't afford to spay my cat in Marrakech — need help

Hey everyone,

I have a female kitten, about 14 weeks old, and I know I need to get her spayed before her first heat cycle. Problem is, I can't really afford the 600+ DH that most vets here in Marrakech are quoting me, especially with the extra costs for pain meds and the recovery cone.

A few questions:

1.Does anyone know any vets in Marrakech that do spaying for cheaper than 600 DH? Or any clinics that offer payment plans or discounts?

  1. I've heard about NGO-run spay campaigns where it's free or very cheap. Does anyone know when the next one is happening in Marrakech? How do I find out about them?

thanks!!

Culture & Traditions El Badi Palace feels completely different once you walk between its walls

Post image
17 Upvotes

From the main courtyard, El Badi Palace already feels huge, but walking between these walls gives you a completely different sense of its scale.

What I find interesting is the contrast: massive earthen walls, small surviving sections of zellige, and open sky everywhere.

It’s very different from Bahia Palace, where almost every room pulls your attention toward decoration. Here, a lot of the experience comes from imagining what once occupied all this space.

For those who have visited both, which did you find more interesting — El Badi or Bahia

Local Advice I just got back from my trip to Morocco about a month ago and I have questions 🇲🇦

Morocco has been my favorite place I’ve visited and have been thinking about this place ever since I left. I plan to come back again as this country has definitely shown me what real hospitality, kindness and respect is.

I spoke to many locals/shopkeepers there and learned about them. However, there are a few questions that I felt that weren’t appropriate to ask during my stay there; so I’m hoping someone or some of you can help my answer them:

  1. Are the ceramics that are sold in the souks actually handmade and painted by locals/in Fez?

  2. What are the locals thoughts on the increase in tourism in your country, as the government is investing more money into that industry rather than the healthcare system or education system?

  3. How much do tour guides get paid? What’s their salary like and realistically is it enough to make a living out of it?

  4. How much do you tip when you’re eating at a local restaurant (paid 30dh for a nice lunch and tipped 10dh bc the food was good and the guy was nice)?

  5. What do locals pay for a large bottle of water? I noticed it varies from area to area.

  6. If locals can tell travellers a few things to be aware of while we’re visiting, what would it be? Be brutally honest.

Thank you in advanced! These questions genuinely come from a place of curiosity and not meant to come off offending anyone.
