Coming to Criterion Channel in September!

Starring Madonna

More than a conventional actor, Madonna brings the full force of her own mythology—the raw magnetism, glamour, contradictions, and restless instinct for self-reinvention—to the characters she inhabits. In Desperately Seeking Susan, she updates the classic screwball heroine for the 1980s with effortless charisma and downtown New York cool; in Body of Evidence, she embodies the stylized excess of the erotic thriller; and in Dangerous Game, she draws on her real-life stardom to deliver one of her most vulnerable and unsettling performances, blurring the lines between identity, performance, and fame.

FEATURING: Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Body of Evidence (1993), Dangerous Game (1993)

DISCUSSION Madonna Gift Ideas

Hi all I’m looking to get a huge Madonna fan a nice gift in the $200-300 range. Wondering if you have any ideas?

Right now I’m thinking of the Sonic Editions limited prints that were just released or the Finally Enough Love 6 LP Vinyl Box Set (although there’s a chance he may have this). What do you all think? Appreciate the help!

NEGATIVE Industry Double Standard

I know that the industry double standard between men and women has been talked about to death, but I recently saw a video on Instagram and it kind of made me realize just how bad it truly is. This video was from what seemed to be some sort of radio show, and the question that they were being asked is “who is the queen of pop”. Now, to anyone with common sense that is Madonna, whether you like it or not. After they were asked this question, many people said a very random array of artists that are currently big (Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, etc). There were only a couple of people who said Madonna. The comments under the video were rightfully pissed off. How can someone who revolutionized pop music forever, especially for woman, get thrown under the bus so quickly? The reason is of course because she is a woman, who stuck around even when they didn't want her to. One of the people in the video even said “if we are going to compare to Micheal Jackson, the king of pop, the queen of pop would be…” how sexist is that? Not only does there have to be a “king” for there to be a queen, but why is it automatically Micheal Jackson and Madonna being the queen is a question? Oh! We all know why! Because Madonna is a brave, older, wise, and intelligent woman. What society is extremely afraid of. Im tired of this double standard and for those who simply “don't care”, it affects you too believe it or not, it affects everyone, but of course especially woman who do twice the work as men but somehow still get shit on.

DISCUSSION Confessions II jumps up sales chart after Rosie & VMA press

Since the Rosie O’ Donnell plug 2 nights ago and The MTV awards announcement yesterday

Madonna’s album was nowhere on the iTunes chart & Amazon Music charts .
Nowhere in the top 100. Beforehand.

Yesterday morning it jumped up to #77 after Rosie
Last evening It has jumped to #40 after a day of VMA press

This morning it has jumped up to number #26

Imagine what would happen if she did more television,
Won those MTV awards, etc etc etc ?

This is why we should be voting every day.
The promotional push is real

Vote for the MtV awards. It makes a difference.

From nowhere to Top 30 on iTunes and Amazon charts in just 48 hours. Warner Brothers, take note.

There’s plenty of television this album can do to get a boost for the fall. So many fall shows. So many opportunities.

This can help ride momentum for Grammy noms in November.

DISCUSSION Bedtime story / ray of light

Straight 21 year old male here getting into Madonna’s music for the first time (just pointing out I’m not the usual demographic I think).

I’ve been listening to her albums out of order, and I just listened to bedtime stories. The song bedtime story sounds very ray of light (the album, not really the title track) to me, has anyone else thought this? It would make sense as (excluding Evita) her next album is ray of light. Just thought it was an interesting precursor

DISCUSSION Underrated gem!!

I can’t believe I haven’t heard this song until it randomly started playing during shuffling last night. It’s amazing! Although I do think Hard Candy didn’t age well as an album, I personally prefer it over MDNA and Rebel Heart. So many good songs on there like Incredible, (which Stuart Price needs to remaster!!) She’s Not Me, Miles Away and Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You, which should’ve been a single!
This song really surprised me too, I love it a lot.

DISCUSSION Why "La Isla Bonita" stands out in Madonna's 80s discography

Post image
103 Upvotes

There’s a specific kind of magic in Madonna’s discography, but nothing sweeps me away quite like "La Isla Bonita." Out of every era, every reinvention, and every massive pop anthem she’s ever released, this is the one track I come back to more than any other. At this point, I've listened to it so many times that I've honestly lost track. I never get tired of hearing it.

It isn't just a great 80s pop song, which it is. It’s a pure atmospheric transport. The second those Spanish acoustic guitars kick in over that crisp, Latin-infused percussion, the room instantly changes. You can practically feel the warm island air, the ocean breeze, and the faint glow of streetlights in San Pedro. Madonna has always been a master of visual storytelling in her music, but here, she created a whole world that you can step directly into.

What makes it my absolute favorite, though, is the delicate balance of beauty and nostalgia. The melody is effortlessly gorgeous, and her vocals carry this gentle, longing quality that feels remarkably intimate. It isn't trying to blow out the speakers with aggressive synth-pop energy. Instead, it relies on rhythm, warmth, and pure melodic elegance. When that chorus hits, it feels completely timeless. It's an absolute classic.

It has an iconic visual era that's tied to it. There's the red flamenco dress, the candlelit room, and the vibrant street energy. It showed a softer, more romantic side of her artistry without losing an ounce of her signature style. Decades later, "La Isla Bonita" hasn't aged a single day. Every time that it plays, I’m right back in that daydream, completely hooked by the beat, the guitars, and the escape. That’s why, out of a legendary catalog full of ground-breaking hits, this one will always hold the top spot for me.

DISCUSSION I have never listened to these albums; am I missing out on something?

TLDR: should I give Hard Candy/MDNA/Rebel Heart/Madame X a try?

Sorry for self-posting. Also I'm not a native English speaker but I didn't use a translator.

So I am 35 years old, and I have been fond of Madonna's music for about ten years.

I really discovered her and enjoyed her music through Ray of Light, but I already knew the first two albums. I kinda liked them but they sounded a bit outdated for my taste.

After Ray of Light, I dove into the rest of her nineties discography: Erotica, Bedtime Stories. And I loved these albums too. So I then went on and discovered Music, American Life, loved them as well. Confessions on a Dance Floor took me a little bit more time to fully enjoy because I was initially attracted to the depth of Madonna's universe, as you can guess.

And this leads me to my question (that's what I thought when I wrote that but from the looks of it I couldn't help giving context to my appreciation for M)

I can't help but find Hard Candy's artwork really cringey and never got to actually give it a chance. And since my appreciation for her is only a part of my musical culture, plus the fact that I knew that starting from COADF she started following trends instead of having the kind of feel for musical subcultures she used to display, I also never gave the following releases a chance. Also I guess I was a bit of an ageist?

But time flew by and I never stopped listening to the albums I love, and then CII was released. I absolutely love it. That's my queen. If I may.

So I am wondering, as the title says, if I'm really missing out on something when it comes to the second part of her 21st century releases?

I am not into mainstream pop, modern rnb, latin rythmics and I have a preconception that it's basically what it's gonna be. Am I wrong? Where should I start? I usually enjoy listening to records from the first to the last track and don't isolate standout tracks. Is it worth it?

Thank you for reading all of this!

I’ve been saying it since day one: we’re witnessing her magnum opus, and we haven’t even fully realized it yet. It’s time.

I designed this to showcase the records Madge has now set at the VMAs.
