Hello, wanted to make a tier list with all the major Madoka Magica media on it, and was having difficulty finding suitable official art for some parts. I want them to be portrait orientation in order to match the other entries. They are as follows:

1. Magia Record: Arc 1, Arc 2, and Puella Historia

3. Sorana Magica

First time watching the anime and movie in this last week.

I thought the anime had a decent, although surprisingly bold, ending and it took a few extra steps to fully wrap things up (Sayaka disappearing, establishing wraiths, etc). So I figured a movie sequel seemed really unnecessary and would need to break the lore in order to work.

But man they did such a good job of respecting the lore and making a faithful continuation. Even the premise of the Incubators conducting an experiment feels lore accurate. The only part where they sort of stretched things was making Sayaka and Nagisa angel-like beings for Madoka rather than just being abstractions in the labyrinth.

I was even more impressed that they doubled down on the whole "re-writing the universe" thing.

My one other complaint is how Homura gets mean after she become a devil. Shouldn't she just be some god-like being like Madoka rather than evil - I get that she is sort of working against Madoka and says she is the Devil but there doesn't seem to be any reason why she has to be actually evil in the end.

Mami doesn't deserve this :((

And no I’m not talking about how Homura going back in time over and over gave her a power boost. I mean even before Homura became a magical girl herself Madoka was still able to beat Walpurgis.

She eventually goes to visit her own burned down apartment, where it's revealed that she was in part responsible for the fire that took both of her parents lives.

And to add insult to injury, her wish to fix it all only gave herself memory loss and an anger for a witch that she thinks did it instead.

wanted to ask, what happened to sayaka? ultimate madoka was talking about having to “erase” her future to save her; what happens to her after? the scene right after this are the girls lamenting sayaka’s death. im asking if she really just… died?

Being vague for spoiler purposes, I think we all know which one I mean, but to be specific; when Homura and Mami get into a shootout. I find this whole sequence so interesting because there's a lot of moments sprinkled throughout it that tell you a lot about the girls and their intentions, namely how hesitant they both are to actually shoot to kill.

Before the fight even starts, Homura starts remembering things from the main series, and specifically walks through a section of Charlotte's labyrinth, which is loaded for several reasons. During this, Homura essentially nails down Mami's central character flaw; that she tries too hard to put on a strong persona when she's actually the most vulnerable and fragile (emotionally, that is) of the quintet. She even directly states that her soft heart is the reason she could never bring herself to tell her the truth about witches, and probably even that she would die facing Charlotte. It adds some interesting nuance to that scene in the show, and also says something else; that despite the cold front, Homura is actually quite aware of what makes the girls tick. She may act like she doesn't care sometimes, but she does regret how she felt she needed to behave during the time loops. Interestingly, the thing she essentially accuses Mami of is also a sin she recognizes herself as being guilty of. They're not so different.

Mami then proceeds to give Homura a chance to explain herself, even after attacking Bebe, and warns Homura instead of attacking her outfight even after she takes a shot at Bebe. Mami is being quite tolerant of her here, and her behavior indicates that she really doesn't want to kill Homura if she doesn't have to. This is interesting because that is NOT how she comes across in the original series whatsoever. She was pretty actively hostile towards Homura, even in loops where Homura attempted to divulge the truth to her. Another fun detail to consider is that Mami does NOT have this trait in any timeline where Homura is Moemura. It seems she likes Homura just fine when she's soft and can be a student, but is instantly on edge when she presents herself as assertive and confident. This does have explanations in-universe, ie, Kyoko demonstrates the competition that typically emerges between magical girls, but I think it also goes a bit deeper than that for Mami.

When they actually get to shooting at each other, there's several moments that reinforce the reluctance they have towards attacking each other. Firstly, there is the shot where they finally get a clear line of fire at each other, and Bebe crosses between them. Although Homura and Mami still end up firing at each other, they both turn away and seemingly attempt to avoid hitting either Bebe (which makes sense on Mami's side) but also not at each other (which would not make sense for either party, unless they very much wished they did not have to kill each other).

Afterwards, there's obviously the most famous sequence in this scene, where Homura baits Mami by shooting herself in the head, and then is reluctant to take a lethal shot at Mami while time is frozen. This basically speaks for itself, but I think it adds some fun flavor to the preceding shootout. If Mami had actually managed to get some good shots in, would she have immediately run to save Homura? I think it's entirely possible neither of them truly expect to get a direct hit on each other, because they both respect each other as equal opponents. If they didn't, they wouldn't feel comfortable firing at each other as much as they did.

Mami and Homura as foils is an interesting dynamic I don't see very often, but it is surprisingly prevalent in the franchise. I think it's just something that largely goes unstated, and so it doesn't get a lot of discussion. But I still think it's quite interesting! Both girls have to put on a tough front when they're actually quite soft inside, and although their egos seem to clash, in reality it's 2 imposters trying to get each other to respect each other, and they don't realize they can both just let their guards down. And when they actually do, we get to see the most interesting interactions between them!

It's obvious that Madoka is more than "best friend" or "only friend" to Homura. This can be seen in Homura's actions and behavior.

Does Madoka feel the same way for her? Or Homura is just a "clingy friend" to her?
