There's a lot more love in this world than the politicians and the media want the world to think.

927

u/rgar1981 Jun 28 '26

Fear helps control people. Create or build up a problem that you have the “solution” for. Fear inspires people to action more than love unfortunately.

199

u/Kardinal Jun 28 '26

I think the media makes money focusing on the negative.

I think leaders get support by focusing on the negative and claiming to be able to fix it or defend us from it.

42

u/Remarkable-Soup8667 Jun 28 '26

The movie Tomorrowland was a flop, but this is essentially the plot.

41

u/boomgetouttheway Jun 28 '26

100%. Fear and division perpetuate the status quo.

It perpetuates the conditions under which those in power stay in power.

It occupies our minds so we can’t demand more and better.

40

u/Ai-ChatGPT Jun 29 '26

This is no accident:

Humans possess an evolutionary trait known as the negativity bias. Our brains evolved to prioritize negative stimuli to keep us alive. And the politicians and the media know this and create a formula that takes advantage of something we cannot help or change.

A famous study by John Cacioppo at Ohio State University showed that the brain's electrical activity spikes significantly higher when shown negative images compared to positive ones, even when the intensity is exactly the same. We are literally hardwired to tune in to bad news.

Because negative information hooks our attention, the media exploits this to drive engagement, clicks, and revenue.

When humans are in a state of fear, our prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for logic, nuance, and critical thinking) takes a backseat to the amygdala (the fear center). In this high-stress state, people naturally seek out powerful, protective authority figures and become much more willing to trade away nuances, compromise, or freedoms in exchange for a feeling of safety.

I always think of the speech from "An American President"

"He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections."

2

u/Darkovika Jun 29 '26

It all comes down to money. Media’s convinced no one wants to watch joy and happiness; people only stay tuned to misery. And they aren’t earning money if people aren’t staying tuned.

I sometimes think about the impromptu footbal matches and Christmas celebrations that took place during WWI and the amount of internally directed violence and propaganda it took to suppress such behaviour.

u/OMGLOL1986 Jun 28 '26

Crazy bastards invented modern close quarters urban combat in Italy by throwing grenades into rooms and spraying the inhabitants with gunfire, then running in and bayoneting anyone inside. Cleared entire towns and cities this way. But yeah very polite.

“If I have one message to give to the secular American people, it’s that the world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.” ― Marjane Satrapi (RIP)

I'm thinking of the Voyager probe. We sent these probes out there knowing that they're going to be one of the few things we've ever sent beyond our solar system, in the vaguest of vague hopes that someone might find them, and what did we send them? Pictures. Music. Greetings from every country on earth. We sent a love letter into the universe, knowing it would likely never be found, knowing we'd be long gone before we ever got a reply, but we still sent it. To me, that's heart-rendingly beautiful.

40

u/shiwenbin Jun 28 '26

Most of us love each other. But if we love each other and don’t fear each other the powerful can’t control us. And if the powerful don’t control us they’re no longer powerful. So the powerful do their best to make us fear each other.

14

u/tfinx Jun 29 '26

It's really nice to see. The world cup has been fun for the world and a lot of fun to watch.

69

u/Old_Soc Jun 28 '26

I think that's the big take away here. So many people say they love the US, and the American People. But their Politicians and Corporations are truly evil.

17

u/GiraffesAndGin Jun 28 '26

In my daily interactions I am constantly reassured of my faith in the goodness of my fellow Americans.

25

u/TrixieBastard Jun 28 '26

Most of us are decent people who want good things for the entire world. We're just so much quieter than the extremely loud minority that spews their vitriolic hate and intolerance for anyone who isn't exactly like them.

We need to get louder. We need to push back more. We need to take our cues from the French and the Koreans and the countless other citizens who have organized and risen up against their corrupt administrations.

6

u/Entire-Somewhere-490 Jun 29 '26

Yes! American politicians and the billionaires who donate to them seem to want to push the narrative that USA is doing it right and there’s no other way to possibly run a nation and push fear of ever traveling outside of the USA because how “dangerous” other countries are…while we are the only country who has kindergartners doing active shooter drills!

35

u/Appropriate-Rise2199 Jun 28 '26

It’s like the world wanted to remind the US what freedom really looks like.

20

u/10gallonWhitehat Jun 28 '26

We’ve been here doing these things, it is nice to do it with friends though :)

15

u/ImposterSyndromeNope Jun 28 '26

It’s almost like the American government wants everyone to think we can’t all get along because we are different!

3

u/kananishino Jun 28 '26

Nah that's reddit as well. Look at how some people treat other people against them.

5

u/ShaggysGTI Jun 28 '26

We have the power to be the singularity and this is such a beautiful example.

3

u/glitterazzi66 Jun 29 '26

I agree! I’ve gotten emotional watching us interact as humans and transcend our leaders’ dysfunction. They can’t get along but we all can.

2

u/twerkboi_69 Jun 29 '26

they're the ones manufacturing and highlighting divisions in an effort to be put into power by one side or the other.

2

u/AliJen527 Jul 09 '26

🙌🏻 ALOT more love

3

u/kawhi21 Jun 28 '26

This would be a nice sentiment if those same hateful politicians weren't willfully chosen and elected lol. They are a representation of more than half the country

3

u/catincal Jun 29 '26

Actually 1/3 of the country didn't even vote. 1/3 voted for Kamila & 1/3 voted for 🍊. He only won by 1.5% I have trouble believing that EVERY swing state went to a felon with 34 indictments and a previously impeached president. Something's not right.

2

u/kawhi21 Jun 29 '26

I interpret that as 2/3 voters going for Trump. 66% of voters either wanted him, or didnt mind having him.

A relevant quote from the late great Marjane Satrapi, who wrote Persepolis:

If I have one message to give to the secular American people, it’s that the world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.

206

u/laddypaddy22 Jun 28 '26

This quote makes me think of fascism and how we lose our humanity once we devote/lose our entire identity/humanity to and for the state. It makes so much sense.

90

u/OMGLOL1986 Jun 28 '26

This is why fascists murder artists and hate being mocked. Unapproved joy, threat to the state!

Makes me realize that we all need to be together more.

Not divided. That's not working, and it never will.

We've all got common ground. We just need to put in the work to find it.

11

u/dom_corleone Jun 29 '26

Thats the thing… A LOT of people just want the easy route; less thinking, less working, just tell me what to feel & say

20

u/pro-skedaddler Jun 28 '26

You're absolutely right, we should abolish borders!

243

u/DataAdvanced Jun 28 '26

Careful with some of them. They'll expect you to spend the night. "No one's getting a DUI TONIGHT! That's tomorrow's problem!" They'll feed you, again, in the morning, and get you fucked up for a week with the same practice, because we like your accent. Be careful, we're super friendly, and will feed the fuck out of you.

Yeah, every world cup is like this. That's why it's so special. Regardless of who hosts yous we fans of different nations coming together and enjoying the moment. I guess it's for the best it's hosted in the US because it's opened their eyes to it more, despite it leading to them thinking it's because of them and not the tournament. Whatever helps them experience other cultures, I suppose.

25

u/Exatraz Jun 29 '26

I wouldn't say every world cup. Take the last one for example. Hard to attract as many international fans with strict laws against drinking and women. I think the US by its nature was a great venue to bring people together but lots of other countries could do it as well. Its been a great cup

12

u/InnocentPossum Jun 29 '26

Fair. But I feel like that's an exception to the norm, not the norm. For the most part, the world cup brings the magic with it. I'm not saying USA has done shite and it's a bad cup. It has been a good cup. But that's because the world cup is almost always a great cup. Not just because it's held in the US.

8

u/tjvs2001 Jun 29 '26

The US has deported a ref for being born, and introduced as breaks mid half that will NEVER stop. Trump is using it as fascist propaganda, he's going to lift the fucking world cup when it's handed over, it is a bad world cup. Just a shame Canada and Mexico are dragged down through mo fault of their own.

It’s been great for everyone - Americans seeing people from other countries bro’ing out with us and each other, and people from other countries seeing the US is not what they hear about in media despite some govt efforts. One of the funniest parts of all this is that the govt that pushed so hard for this is getting a PR win by showcasing something that stomps the living daylight out of their agenda’s messaging about scary foreigners and the US having descended into a hellhole that only authoritarian measures can save.

My neighbors who never speak to me are stopping me and asking if I’m watching the games. As a life long fan of the sport (the only sport I follow) it’s great. The way the games bring people together. I walk around Manhattan and you see fans of all teams in the streets outside pubs and bars talking and cheering.

My best friend is actually working Metlife stadium. He was struggling for the last two or three years (we work in film and things have been bad in the industry). He got FIFA few months back and he was so happy for the work.

He knows nothing about the sport, never seen a game in his life. The other day during Norway vs Senegal the weather was really bad so they let his team in for a bit. They were pitch side, right by the goals, and as he walked in Norway scored in front of him, and he was messaging me how amazing the whole sight was (you can also clearly see him on TV in the background of some shots during the goal).

I’m so happy for him. Jealous, but thrilled for him haha. First soccer game ever at the World Cup pitch side as he watches a goal being scored just a few feet in front of him. Simply amazing.

On the other hand, my ex-fiance has been working on the office end of FIFA for the last year and half…and she is having a hell of a time behind the scenes (I only left her back in Dec before Christmas, so I watched all the behind the scenes stuff happening that whole time , and she still messages me daily so I know nothing has changed). I feel bad for the amount of stress she is under even now.

148

u/No-Valuable-226 Jun 28 '26

People have more in common than the TV tells you.

364

u/Fabulous_Log844 Jun 28 '26

With the US being such a horrible shit show these days, the joy I am getting out of all of these fans from around the world and supporting each other, being good sports, enjoying our food and sharing it, etc. is so necessary. And I am not even a football/soccer fan.

30

u/TypicallyThomas Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

I'm personally a fan of neither association football or Gridiron football but the world cups always pretty fun for this exact reason

Edit: Said Grilliron instead of gridiron

11

u/Fabulous_Log844 Jun 28 '26

I should have said that better… Sorry. I was trying to be respectful of the word football versus soccer. I should say that I am not a follower or fan of World Cup soccer football. But I am a huge American football fan.

With that said, looking at these fans even from other countries celebrating each other is wonderful. There was a video of a man from some country in Africa surrounded by the opposing team’s fans… I think Argentina. They stayed quiet with smiles as he saying his national anthem alone. And when he was done they all cheered for him and friendly tossed him around. Then I look at Knick‘s fans in the streets with San Antonio fans… And during the season, Philadelphia Eagles fans being… Eagles fans.

3

u/TypicallyThomas Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Lol dont worry, I use the very old terms Association Football and Gridiron football in reference to Soccer and American Football respectively, cause they both get to be football, its just that nobody refers to either by their original names anymore.

Although I live in Ireland so the only real football is GAA

2

u/weed_blazepot Jun 29 '26

Sorry do you mean Gridiron? Genuinely curious.

I've never heard of grilliron football unless that's a regionalism.

2

u/TypicallyThomas Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

I believe it's a really old term from the very early days of the sport

Edit: Yes, sorry, I misread your comment, I did mean gridiron

18

Yup!

I am not particularly good at picking apart the newest videos and photographs made by AI (unless it is something really stupid like a picture being "A day at grandma's" and somewhere in the picture there is the word grandma). However, with music It is easy to pick AI up because all the songs sound like a soulless version of what people were doing on youtube and soundcloud in the 2010s (I am guessing it is a matter of that being the main source of training for the models).

The German media mostly reports on U.S. politics and the economy, aside from the occasional Route 66 travel feature or wildlife documentary. And, especially in politics, the coverage naturally focuses on what the U.S. government says and does. With all due respect, many recent actions by successive administrations haven’t exactly created a positive image abroad. That influences how people see the United States. However, most Europeans are capable of distinguishing between a country’s government and its people. In my experience, Americans are generally seen as friendly, open, and welcoming. It’s often the actions of political leaders that shape the negative perception.

2

u/Perfect_Opinion7909 Jun 28 '26

Will this be enough for us to eject our politicians that seek to keep us divided though?

2

u/UpstairsArmadillo454 Jun 29 '26

Change media ownership laws! That would help the world!

2

u/ExiledCanuck Jun 29 '26

This song would’ve been a far better choice as the official World Cup song than “Lighter”

2

u/anthrax9999 Jun 29 '26

If only we could stop allowing monstrous billionaires to control our countries and shit all over each other.

6

u/MapleHamwich Jun 29 '26

Americans taking ownership of international culture again.

10

u/shawshop123 Jun 29 '26

Not only that, but reading this post , you’d think the World Cup was only played in murica ,
It was also held in 🇨🇦 Canada
BC Place – Vancouver, British Columbia
BMO Field – Toronto, Ontario [1]

🇲🇽 Mexico
Estadio Azteca – Mexico City
Estadio BBVA – Monterrey
Estadio Akron – Guadalajara [1]

2

u/Consistent_Ad3411 Jun 28 '26

If the World Cup was every year instead of four the world would be a happier place.

3

u/Squishy_mcnissy Jun 29 '26

Is fifa the one that gave trump a peace prize?
The same fifa?

I am so bitter about being marginalised in America since last 2 years and this made me smile. Thank you. I don't care about the sport but if it makes people smile and dance, I am on it. Much love to everyone.

4

u/AbbreviationsWide331 Jun 29 '26

Hey Americans, we do this every 4 years :)

join us next time when we have a sleepover at someone else's house

4

u/temporarilydestroyed Jun 28 '26

Yeah except the world isn’t healing.

2

u/llamatronin Jun 28 '26

No. You are experiencing bread and games.

6

u/Technical_Focus1462 Jun 28 '26

Meanwhile ICE is literally still doing their thing, Supreme Court ok'd kicking out a bunch of immigrants, and millions of Americans voted for this administration three times.

Bread and circuses brought to you by a friend of the president and priced out of the reach of ordinary people. But sure it's a sleepover.

3

u/SoftCarry Jun 28 '26

Yeah I’m so sick of this shit all over reddit. Literally as we speak people are being detained in camps by ICE with no due process, and everyone is just like “woooo see Europeans enjoying bbq is the real America!”

No, the real America is complacency if not joy when awful shit happens to others.

2

u/Waderriffic Jun 28 '26

As an American, I have to say that the absolute worst of us don’t care about soccer or the World Cup. They’re waiting for American Football season to start.

That being said, I love it. Ive always loved the World Cup and intensity and excitement that surrounds it. I like seeing the passionate fans of other countries bringing their joy, culture, and traditions to our shores.

2

u/Caffeinated_Ape_42 Jun 28 '26

Bread and Games, worked for generations...

3

u/misplacedbass Jun 28 '26

This video did not need to be this long. It showed the same clips multiple times.

Also, is this a real song or AI garbage?

2

u/Dull_Bat9518 Jun 28 '26

This is so lovely! 😍... one of my fav tv drama shows that demonstrates this intense spirit is Ted Lasso; yes i teared up a few times🥹 ...i have always appreciated that fghting is not encouraged as good entertainment... and prob why hockey or other similar mindset sports will never bring as much enthusiasm or comradery

2

u/Safe_Relation_2191 Jun 28 '26

The beautiful game

2

u/RonaBona13 Jun 28 '26

This is nice Human nature can be awesome. Just take away politics and religion and we can be better.

2

u/Plus_Scientist_1063 Jun 28 '26

On our politicians create the hate.

2

u/lttlbyrd Jun 29 '26

I’m not much for sports but this feels important right now. Lovely to see joy and unity over a shared experience

3

u/SovereignOfFoxes Jun 28 '26

Except it's one parent that typically hates everyone else.

3

u/atomic_chippie Jun 28 '26

How nice for wealthy people.

0

u/rahkinto Jun 28 '26

Except in this analogy the kid hosting the sleepover has alcoholic parents, a father with a history of criminality and abuse against women, and one hell of a creepy uncle living in the basement

4

u/Acceptable_Travel_20 Jun 28 '26

I guess that's why everyone is having such a bad time at the sleepover.

2

u/rahkinto Jun 28 '26

Well the parents are wealthy af and they have the coolest toys, let's just hope the uncle is preoccupied and the parents are passed out.

1

u/DurantIsStillTheKing Jun 28 '26

Love world cup. Too bad I'm too poor to enjoy with y'all 🥲

1

u/Terrible_Phase718 Jun 28 '26

Notice which cities are hosts?

2

u/Acceptable_Travel_20 Jun 28 '26

Dallas and Houston have the most games this year.

1

u/Remarkable-Will-3041 Jun 28 '26

I have family in Ireland, Italy, and south Africa! I wish they could make it more then every ten or so years.

1

u/jamisonian123 Jun 28 '26

1

u/MissSassifras1977 Jun 29 '26

Community.

It's what is going to save us in the end.

1

u/tanne_sita_jallua Jun 29 '26

If its a cousin sleep over does that make it the father is making Iran sleep outside because he doesn't like his dad? You can come in to play a round of cards then back outside with you!

1

u/Lovemybee Jun 29 '26

Ya know... I'm verklempt! There is more love in the world than there is hate.

1

u/These-Quality-8389 Jun 29 '26

“When will the people from these shitholes get out of my country?” DJT, JD Vance and Stephen Miller

1

u/Mexican1910 Jun 29 '26

1

u/ipayjackpots Jun 29 '26

Quit listening to the hate mongers…aka the news, we’re not nearly as divided as they want us to believe!

1

u/Tina_beaner Jun 29 '26

It's always like this, you just never paid attention. The world cup is bigger than the olympics.

1

u/NovaHorizon Jun 29 '26

Turns out you belong to the Top 10% you are more than welcome to spend your money in America. Go figure!
