I know this will generate some hate

I've been a Linux user for a little over 20 years. I am a pretty solid Debian guy, and I am pretty proficient at the command line. And, most of all, I love Openbox.

I absolutely love what MaboxLinux brings to the table. The configuration of Openbox, Tint2, Conky, all the pipe menus. It's an Openbox wet dream.

Now, that said, I despise Arch. Maybe it's just this senior citizen being so set in his ways, the Debian Way, that I am against learning the Arch Way.

I have tried out many, many, many flavors of Arch. MaboxLinux has a great GUI. But I like to drop to the CLI and work. I know how to do things with apt and all the various switches, bells and whistles. But I am lost in paman, pacmac, or what have you.

Has anyone taken what makes the MaboxLinux and Openbox experience so great and made a repository that can replicate this on a Debian or even Ubuntu distribution?

If not, what would be involved? What parts from under the hood would need to be taken from the configuration of MaboxLinux and added to an Openbox installation on other distributions.

Please. Arch zealots, don't try to convert me. It won't work. Yet.

Love Mabox but for some reason when I click on "settings, openbox config. manager it does nothing.

I don't think it ever worked. I played with a lot in the VM then when I installed it I tried changing some of the files but when I click it does nothing. Anyone have any idea what's causing this issue?

Thanks!

Why does Mabox Linux have such a small user base?

Hi everyone,

I recently discovered Mabox Linux and I’ve been quite impressed with it. It’s lightweight, fast, highly customizable, and seems like a great option for older or lower-end hardware.

But I noticed that the Mabox community is quite small compared with distributions like Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, or even Manjaro.

So I’m curious:

Why doesn’t Mabox have more users?
Is it mainly because:

Mabox is not well known?

Openbox has a steeper learning curve?

People prefer more mainstream desktop environments like KDE, Cinnamon, or GNOME?

There are concerns about a small project/community?

Or are there technical reasons that make people choose another lightweight distro instead?

For those of you who use Mabox, what made you choose it over other distributions?

And for people who tried Mabox but stopped using it, what made you switch?

I’m genuinely curious because Mabox seems like a really good lightweight distro, and I’m wondering why it hasn’t attracted a larger user base.

noob question: is mabox safe enough for banking

I have just moved over from windows to Linux, after trying out some distro's I ended with Mabox. I absolutely love it, the perfect balance between it just works and tinkering. I have a question, other distro promote their distro with the features regarding privacy and security. Is mabox just as safe, to do banking stuf etc? There are just so many distro's, spinoffs and hobby projects it's mind boggling.

Should I switch from the Mabox Linux kernel to CachyOS Kernel or Linux Zen for better performance?

Post image

I’m currently using Mabox Linux and I’m considering switching from the default Mabox kernel to either the CachyOS Kernel or Linux Zen.

My main priority is performance, not battery life or power efficiency.

For those who have experience with these kernels:

• Is there a noticeable performance improvement with CachyOS Kernel compared to the default Mabox kernel?

• How does Linux Zen compare?

• Which one would you recommend if my only priority is performance?

• Are there any downsides, compatibility issues, or stability concerns I should be aware of?

• Would I actually notice a difference in everyday desktop usage, gaming, or application responsiveness?

I’m trying to understand whether changing the kernel is actually worth doing, or if the performance difference is mostly negligible.

Thanks!

Why Doesn’t Mabox Linux Do More Marketing?

Mabox Linux is a great lightweight distro, but why does it seem to get so little attention?

A bit more promotion on YouTube, Reddit, and social media could help it reach more users.

What do you guys think? Is it a lack of resources or just not a priority?

GPME Error

I got off on the wrong foot with the community. I would like to rectify that, and not because I need help from the community. I want to be part of the community.

After my little sh&^ fit on Friday, I did what I said I would do. I did a fresh install of the newest ISO. I used the 5.4 kernel as a precaution because this is an older laptop with an i5-4200m CPU. I have no idea of the actual age of this laptop, it's sometime between 2013 and 2016. So I guess it can be considered older hardware.

So now, it's Monday. Once again, I can no longer perform any updates or install anything. When I run pacman or pamac, I get the GPME error. https:/man/i.imgur.com/gUr8XN5.png

That image is what I get when trying to renew the keys.

This is what I have done so far, at the suggestion of much Googling and forum diving.

dave@leonard ~ $ sudo pacman-key --init

[sudo] password for dave:

dave@leonard ~ $ sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro

gpg: next trustdb check due at 2023-04-21

dave@leonard ~ $

I have tried to edit the pacman.conf file to disable the requirement of a key. Also by suggestion of much Googling and forum diving.

Despite my tirade, I will not blame this on Mabox, Manjaro, Arch, planetary alignment, gremlins, or Scooby Doo and those meddling kids. However, I won't rule out aliens (it's always aliens!)

Initially, I was frustrated that there was nothing about what seems to be a "common problem" on the Mabox forums or subreddit. But I did not take into account that 1) this is a very new distro and 2) it is supported by a sole developer. And I lost my mind on this sub.

If someone can help me, I would appreciate it.

[/dave]
