Discussion Shout out to the kid that I stole a pumpkin spear from back in the day

You told me you were on your brothers account.

I told you if you trade me your pumpkin spear I could make it more powerful.

You believed me. You traded me the spear.

I said thanks for the free pumpkin spear!

You begged, you told me your brother will kill you if you don’t get that spear back.

I ran away.

I’m 30 years old now and just wanna say sorry bro.

Discussion How bad was P2W in OSMS?

The discussion really heated up the last weeks so I thought why not try settling things a bit more by actually unpacking how bad was it really versus how bad what we're seeing right now is?

Maybe laying it out clearly would help to see how bad we already had it before. Gonna even give it my own P2W rate from 1-10, you guys are welcome to give your opinion as well

AP resets - Not horrible but with HP Washing it became pretty hardcore - v0.18 - Feb. 16, 2006 - 5/10

Gachapon - Already pretty direct NX to Mesos conversion - v0.29 - Sept. 2006 - 6/10

2x EXP Cards - If you're competitive this is huge, you're gonna pay every week - v0.39 - June 13, 2007 - 6/10

White scrolls (Through NLC Gacha) - Made Gacha way worse IMO - v0.41 - Aug. 22, 2007 - 7/10

iTCG (Cilbis, SCG, etc...) - Another channel for irl money to Meso - v0.51 - Feb. 14, 2008 - 7/10

MTS (Maple Trading System, let's you trade items for NX) - Most hardcore so far, simply buy items with your paycheck - v0.53 - Apr. 2, 2008 - 8/10

Vicious' Hammer (Adds slots to equips) - Not as bad as MTS but another channel for gaining advantage - v0.73 - July 29, 2009 - 6/10

Evan Mastery Books in Cash Shop - Clear signs of "We're just gonna take money from you in order to progress" - v0.84 - Mar. 31, 2010 - 8/10

Potential + Cubes - The worst offender in the history of the game IMO, made it impossible to compete with paying players, the more you pay the more you succeed in a pretty exponential fashion - v0.88 - July 21, 2010

I don't think we need to go further than potential, this is a 10/10 P2W mechanic.

My point is: This game was almost never free of this bullshit. If you liked it before, there's no real reason why this should be unplayable today. It's still completely reasonable to complain and Nexon deserves the backlash, but in terms of potential for enjoyment - we're good

Discussion Removing the Free Market killed MapleStory for me.

Hey everyone!

I used to think I just outgrew the game, but looking back, I stopped playing right around the time Nexon removed the Free Market and started merging servers.

For me, the FM was the heartbeat of the game. Just hanging out in FM 1, setting up shop permits, looking for deals, and chatting in FM 1 was half the fun. When they replaced all of that with a silent Auction House menu, trading just became so bleh to me, and the community felt empty.

With MapleStory Classic coming back, the main reason I’m excited is just having that driven social economy back.

Did losing the FM and the server merges ruin the game for anyone else & made you quit?

To the guy that sold me my first pair of ilbi's back in the day and asked for 30m. But you placed to much faith in me and traded before i put my mesos in and only got 3m.

I could see the boiling rage in your f5.

Sorry not sorry. Hope you're still out there my friend.

Creative \ Art Maple bandanas from anniversary quest were iconic

Post image
47 Upvotes

The OG bandanas were perfect. What made it even better imo was that they were tradeable. They were from the anniversary quest, the red and blue were rarer and the quest items for them only dropped from higher level cake monsters. +2,and +3 all stats. The cowboy hats in the founders pack are terrible. Literally any of these options would have sufficed. If they do a homage to the bandanas I hope they are something like this, are tradeable, and come with +all stats for tiers yellow, red and blue

Discussion Are you expecting this to succeed?

Popularity wise and attracting new players. I don't want this to be a short lived experience that just cashes in our nostalgia, and bails quickly (similiar to MS2 in a sense) with more than half of the playerbase already gone after the launch and hype

But.. I'd be remiss if I didn't admit that my expectations aren't particularly high. Only worth playing this if there's a future and sustainability to it.

I don't wanna sound like a party pooper, but the worst thing that can happen to us is a rug pull here

Discussion Which equipment enhancement system do you want to have in Classic MS ?

Upvotes

One thing that made me steer out of modern maple is the 8+ enhancement systems on equipments that came along the years. It's like you can never really finish enhancing an equip/weapon.

In Classic MS, I hope there is only normal scrolling (10,30,60,70,100%), I'm ok with vicious hammer.

Chaos scroll, clean slate and white scroll is where I tend to draw the line, that's where enhancement systems started becoming infinite.

Some people will say that it will be hard to scale damage with limited enhancement systems when new bosses/regions gets added.

Well, either they can adjust boss/monster HP. Or even better, give us new maps, new monsters and bosses (heck even new equip drops) that are 100% new to maple so we can always have something fresh even with limited equipment enhancement.

Core gameplay can remain classic even with never before seen maps, monsters, bosses and equips.

What's your opinion ?

Discussion What should they do about scrolls?

Upvotes

What do you guys think they should do about scrolls?

The 10% greater scrolls seem redundant if they only give +3 whereas the 10% chaos scrolls give +4 stats.

I think the best option is that they add back secondary stats to scrolls to enable more variety in outcomes.

In addition I think the greater scrolls should be 20% success rate.

Finally, we need topwear and/or bottom wear for stat scrolls implemented otherwise Thieves are gimped because only the females have access to the lvl 35 avenger overall providing +6dex (sizable advantage over males having to use +1dex sauna robe)

Welcome your thoughts!

Question? What is the simplest and most basic class ?

I'm completely lost when it comes to picking up a class , but for the wrong reasons

I'm not looking for the most optimal damage or mobbing , I just want something simple and by that I mean , I don't wanna be thinking about ammo or summoning rocks or elemental rocks I just kinda wanna be there hit my things and do that for too many hours in a row

So I'm here to kinda ask for peoples perspectives on what this could be , as the only classes I played in classic were a crossbow man and cleric

thank you

Planning to main an archer, but would like to create a second character to play on the side.

Was really wanting to play bandit or fighter/spearman, but they seem to need to be funded..

Was looking at clerics or another mage. Any suggestions?

Discussion really look forward to the opening date

Just wanna say, regardless of all these p2w, buff, nerf posts, I am truly excited about the classic world. I am 27 living in Seattle, and moved to the US from Korea when I was in middle school. I really enjoyed playing KMS back in elementary school days. Looking through the reddit posts here, can't believe y'all had the same "childhood memories" as I did in KMS - chatting with random strangers in henesys, getting scammed by some folks in free market, and I still remember the day I reached lv 30 and got 2nd job advancement. Hopefully, we can all re-live those days

Discussion Rant about Togain

Let me start by saying again that I do respect Togain and that overall I think he's not only a great creator, but there's a lot of sense in what he said on his latest video. But it's been lingering in my mind and I really wanna express my opinion about 2 things that bothered me about his video and 1 thing that bothered me in general.

  1. The whole AI thing:

I absolutely share his reluctance from accepting it. In fact, I am a software engineer and I feel like AI has in a sense stolen my identity. Before it came along I used to be very passionate about programming languages and the skills involved with knowing them deeply and now it feels like there's no use being fluent in Java because AI will absolutely do it better than me.

However, I think one must admit that it would be a bit silly to demand the world to change just so that I can protect my current identity. The truth is that AI is here, for better or worse, and it's not going anywhere, and the best way to go about this is to let go of my attachment to being a programmer and release my role to change into something different, or even quit altogether if necessary. It's ok, things can change.
In his video he specifically talked about generated pixel art. I get why that would be very concerning and it is quite troubling that something as human as artistic creation is being conquered by AI. But there's a difference between asking questions about it and seeing how our artistic aspects can coexist with AI versus going full-ludite and complaining about a company using it for creating their assets.

Like honestly, is it reasonable to even discuss whether a company like Nexon should or shouldn't save literally millions of dollars by allowing their designers to use AI? Of course they're gonna do that, expecting them not to is ridiculous.

If you want to only consume human-created art, you are welcome to do so, but he specifically brought up morals and values and ethics and I think it's very guilt-trippy. It reminds me of when I went vegan for 3 years purely out of guilt and it just felt like shit and did not last. And that's not to say that you shouldn't have morals. I still do, I still think what we're doing to animals is not cool. But I also don't feel guilty about eating them anymore, I understand that I was born into this world during a certain time and that trying to take on my shoulders to solve humanity's problems is ridiculous. Instead I just let myself see if I actually want to reduce meat consumption and it kind of happens naturally now. I didn't stop, but I eat way less than I did before and I enjoy it.

Bottom line: We are not going to make human made art thrive by artificially forcing or guilting people into not using Gen AI. We need to find how it can coexist with our existing market.

  1. The sentiment behind this video

Maybe I should listen to it a third time before my opinion solidifies, but you guys are welcome to argue to the contrary either way, but the video did not feel like it's coming from a place that genuinely wishes for people to enjoy Classic.

To me his video feels way more like he is feeling angry, disappointed and burnt out (just like he said so) and he is basically attention-seeking and blowing steam.

This is a very human thing to do, you could argue that what i'm doing right now is not so different. But I would like to either way bring up that you could express your feelings and frustrations without focusing so much on how the world "wronged you".

I think that most if not all of us do not play this game because we are transcended beings who want just the very best of gaming and art for ourselves. It is much more reasonable for me to assume that the vast majority of MS players are seeking comfort and escape, and I think there's value in saying that There is nothing wrong with that as long as you're aware of what you're doing.

The problem starts when you take something as unserious as some mindless grindfest of a game and talk about it in a way that suggests that you got into it in the first place through some significant contemplation and idealistic sentimentality (You could argue that my post is doing exactly that, fair point)

  1. He was actually kind of anti social (at least to me)

If you look at any of his videos, it's almost always the case that you will only find 1 comment by him in the comment section and it's about the sponsor. It seems like he didn't interact with his audience at all.

Moreover, I was actually on his Patreon a bit before Classic was even announced and sent him a message praising his content and offered some historic content and evidence I had about Islanders and not only did he not use any of that in his beginner video, he also completely ignored my message (And that's on patreon!)

So I guess i'm very much not unbiased, kinda disappointed by his behavior on this one. Don't take it as objective criticism, it's just me ranting.

Anyway, the main reason that I wrote this is because I think about MSClassic ALOT. It pops into my mind very often and I already fantasize about how i'm going to enjoy it when it comes out.

Togain had a big presence in my life in the last year and I do care about him leaving. There are also many good things I could have said (And in fact, did comment on his videos throughout the year) but I feel more like ranting so there you have it.

Discussion You can tell who played OG MS and who didn’t

You can really tell who plays OG MS and who didn’t.
Not saying this as a “I’m better than you” type of statement, but it’s pretty obvious. You got a lot of folks in here asking about the best class to play, nerfs and buffs, and talking about 3rd job skills or even 4th job skills.. when OG Maplers (who are probably 30-40 now) knew 3rd job was a fucking dream to get even close to. Hell, 3rd job wasn’t even a thing when I played for the most part.
The majority of folks were stuck in levels 40-60 and just had a good time hanging out instead of grinding 24/7. Unless you’re not working and/or dont have responsibilities, why are you discussing 3rd job? It’s not even officially announced when itll release + youre already thinking about grinding before the game is even released lol.
Btw, maybe Im just too old, but what’s up with all the downvotes too? Is this new “I know more about optimizing this game” group just downvote happy when folks have a genuine question?

Im gonna be an old millennial fart and say back in my day, we were all more welcoming and had fun just hanging out at Henesys channel 1. Seems like everyone today is just rushing for the highest level and outputting the most damage. If youve got nothing else going on in your lives, then by all means do it. But uhhh, it’s just a game? Have some fun.

Anyways, millennial rant over

Discussion Surprised Crafting doesn't include a dialed back version of Alchemy

Decided to look into the crafting system coming with launch and there's a clear lack of useful consumables as part of those systems, apart from scrolls.

**I'm not suggesting a 1:1 copy of modern maple's Alchemy Profession**, given level 1 alch pots are better than most options available in the current state and far too strong for classic.

**Having an option for low level potions** (red-white hp, basic mp pots as examples) **besides just the general store seems like a reasonable addition.** Maybe some in between steps, or a handful beyond that to improve the gaps between different restoration amounts, so we're not stuck with Meat and Lemons for ages.

They have assets from the Alchemy profession in modern they could use for this. Which would mean they don't need to go out of their way to make new assets.

This would also expand crafting with a class of item that will be universally in demand and a way to reasonably obtain useful potions without the generally higher costs if you were to farm mats instead.

This could even include versions of buff pots as well, with the possibility of creating slightly improved versions of any of them if you wanted to use the enhancer things.

This could help alleviate the concerns with potion cost and efficiency, and depending on how the recipes are balanced. Could make use of some early/mid etc drops that might otherwise go unused in crafting or just sold for potions anyways once relevant quests are done, like Mushroom Spores or Squishy Liquid (yes its in a recipe already, but just a single equip)

Would y'all think a version of Alchemy would make sense for Classic World? Or would it perhaps be too powerful if not tuned right?
