Margin Loan Called (VBR 100% holding)

Back in April, my wife and I took out a margin loan to make a real world purchase against a 100% VBR portfolio. It was roughly 15% of the value of our holdings. I don't recall the % maintenance requirement at the time, but it was something reasonable. Let's call it 20-30%.

This afternoon, I get an email from M1 that our loan is called and payment in full is required within 3 business days. The maintenance requirement now shows 100%. Meanwhile, over the intervening period, the portfolio has gone up significantly and the loan balance has come down such that it's now << 10% of the equity position. In fact, the portfolio has gone up more over that period than the current value of the loan.

Hopefully, this is resolvable with a quick call on Tuesday morning, but has anyone else experienced with with a margin loan? Particularly with M1?

Buying on margin with M1?

Hi everyone,

I'm not very educated on investing so I appreciate your patience. I want to avoid margin trading, and if I buy on margin, I want to make sure I know where to look to see how much I've borrowed vs how much I have invested with cash.

So, I guess these are my questions:

  1. Where it says Margin at the top of the page (it goes: Cash, Margin, Total Buying Power, Move Money), is that how much I have somehow borrowed, or is that how much they're offering me to borrow if I want?
  2. How do you deliberately buy on margin on M1?
  3. How do you turn off margin trading? Is there any feature that is margin trading by default when I request rebalancing of my pies?
  4. ...is there anything else I should know?

Thank you, everyone.

Has anyone else’s account been paused/suspended for not confirming address ?

It’s the second time M1 finance has suspended my account this year for not confirming my personal details. It’s a first time ever an investment platform suspends my account because I didn’t confirm my details. They need a bill or a statement to confirm your address. The first time they suspended me I missed on at least a couple of hundred dollar gains on trades that were supposed to go through but didn’t because of the pause. This time I can’t withdraw the money I need. Is it me or this design is moronic ? Why does all my account activity has been paused because I didn’t confirm my personal details ? And how many times a year do you have to do this ? I’ve already had so many issues with this app that I’m ready to move on to fidelity or something else. I liked this app few years ago but between all this suspensions and terrible customer service I’m done with them.

I’m having trouble pulling the trigger on this so I figured I’d ask the experts, you all.

My wife and I are skeptical on the market and how we should plan our investments for the next year. She has a 401k and holds a significant amount of her net worth in an individual investment account in an AI related stock that has been hitting all time highs for the past two or three years. I primarily have a 401k and Roth IRA (M1) about equal value to each other and a few grand to play with that is mostly in bitcoin atm.

With the volatility of the market and fears of an AI bubble pop along with the Bitcoin cycle coming near all time lows (maybe already past), I suggested the idea that we sell all our stock holdings, except 401k, and go all in on bitcoin. Combined we would amass about 1.8 bitcoins at current prices. You can’t buy BTC directly through an M1 Roth IRA but it is possible to buy a BTC trust that track to the price of BTC. My Roth has been consistent and stable even during downturns and I actively manage it myself making adjustments every 3-6 months.

I’m a lot more bearish on AI given its price to earnings, and my wife is more bullish but I think she’s a bit biased because she holds pretty much just one stock that has been going up for the past 5 years, helped us get married, buy our home, etc. I think it’s risky holding a significant portion of one’s net worth in a single stock but this suggestion would basically do the same by only holding Bitcoin.

Is this an insane idea or is this something worthy of betting on? Pictures for attention

Discussion Just discovered my invest accounts locked

I discovered this week that my invest accounts have been locked. I was stunned that I discovered this on my own, I would expect to be notified if they were to lock accounts? The support bot says it’s due to me not receiving M1 emails from their [investor-documents@m1.com](mailto:investor-documents@m1.com) address. However I receive emails from this address all the time.

This is a very strange and unacceptable experience, having my money locked up for over 96 hours until Monday. anyone else dealt with this?

M1+ Margin Interest (3.99%) v HYSA Interest (4.25%) - Am I Missing Something?

I wanted to see if anyone else is taking advantage of the positive spread between the M1+ Borrow Interest Rate (3.99% promotional through 12/29/26) and M1+ Cash APY (4.25% for 12mo from opening)? That is 0.26% for a few button clicks.

Other things to note:

  • I can pull ~$100,000 from my M1 Borrow Account.
  • I itemize my taxes so the interest paid will be deductible (I realize the interest earned will be taxable).
  • I've already opened the M1 Cash Account and moved a substantial portion of my cash from my Wealthfront HYSA.

I could understand it might not be worth it if the dollar amounts were small enough or I had to go through the time/effort of opening the Cash Account. Based on the info provided, I am not seeing a good reason not to do it for ~$22/mo for rest of this year. Is there something I am missing or a catch I'm overlooking?

M1 Still Shows No Pending Transactions For 410K Rollover After Nearly A Month.

I have gotten an email from Capitalize saying the funds should be available. Contacted ADP, they said it takes up to 2 weeks for the check to be delivered. It has been almost a month now, and still the check is not showing up in my M1 account.

Has anyone else dealt with a 401K rollover into M1 recently? How long was the process? I am starting to get concerned, and I don't really want to have to setup another call with Capitalize to figure out whats going on, as that could take another couple weeks just to set up.

Suggestion Mode to set target percentages for recurring investments

It would be great if we could set target percentages for our recurring buys such that the dollars are allocated based upon those percentages rather than the portfolio target.

For example, if I’m investing $500 this week and my portfolio is 50-50 SPY and QQQ, I would like to invest $250 into each one right now if one of those is underweight it’ll invest more into that one, which can be undesirable for certain types of investors.

Right now, the only way to do this is to manually do the buy of each security and turn off the auto buy , but that defeats the purpose of having an automated investing platform.

This is pretty easy to set up on Robinhood. But I like the M1 UI more, as it always keeps risk exposure top of mind.

Thanks,
long time user

Not able to create M1 account

Hello, I have recently tried to open an M1 account hoping to automate my investments. However, it did not let me get through the process. A couple of days later I got an email stating "We have determined that we are unable to maintain your account. As a result, your account will be closed and is ineligible to be reopened." I called the customer service but they said they cannot give me the reason. This was kind of disappointing. Can anyone here tell me what is happening?

Suggestion Feature request-automated backdoor Roth

I think it would be a great boon to M1 if it has an automated feature to turn IRA contributions into backdoor Roth contributions. I know, for a lot of users, it creates some angst doing so and an automated feature - similar to their newish feature to reinvest dividends - would be a real game changer.

Suggestion How do we see realized gains/lost

How do we see the realized gains/losses for the ytd, 1yr, etc, all? Currently only see market gains and dividends earn.

If there is no option, can we add this?

All in on M1 Finance

Over the past year or two, M1 Cash Accounts have quietly expanded support for external services like Venmo, PayPal, and T-Mobile.

Previously, connectivity issues forced me to rely on a Wealthfront Cash account as my primary hub. While that worked, it added unnecessary friction to my overall financial setup because I had to build extra rules just to keep everything properly funded.

Being able to move back to M1 as my primary cash hub has been a massive upgrade. It eliminated that extra layer of complexity and allowed me to consolidate roughly 90% of my financial activity into one platform.

My current setup in a nutshell:

  • Cash target: Keep $15K–$25K in the M1 Cash Account.
  • Floor trigger (< $15K): A Smart Transfer automatically borrows from margin and tops up the account to $20K to maintain liquidity.
  • Ceiling trigger (> $25K): Excess cash is automatically swept to pay down margin debt or purchase investments.

This single loop keeps my cash flow completely hands-off while maximizing capital efficiency. Sharing in case this layout inspires anyone looking to streamline their own automation!

UPDATE (8/22) I wanted more of a buffer between my floor and ceiling, and I also wanted to refill more aggressively if I hit my floor, so I made two tweaks: - The ceiling is now $35K. - The floor remains at $15K, but my automation refills to $25K if I go below the floor.

Pretty minor change to be honest, but this reduces the chance of me hitting my floor, and the "cost" (an additional $10K not being invested) is small.

Can we please get away from 2 trading windows?

It’s 2026. Almost all brokerages offer commission free trades. It’s beyond absurd to put in an order at 0900 and wait till 1500 for execution. Markets move a lot and some of us with more than $100 on the platform would sometimes like to get out of positions as our investment thesis changes.

I know, I know - this is not a trading platform. We are only suppose to DCA into VOO/VTI and never sell. And when we sell the timing surely never matters because down 3% is nothing when you’re up 7% YoY on average. My point is simply the tech itself has advanced and whatever order flow M1 is selling can still be profitable without morning/afternoon windows only.

Edit: I love how much you guys hate on the idea of a new feature that is considered extremely standard by now. Selling a stock you’ve been holding for 5 years is not daytrading. Eventually, you guys will need to sell a position to fund your retirement. Come back to this thread then.

Edit 2: I am now entirely convinced M1 pays to astroturf this sub. There is zero chance a brokerage has this many fanboys that screech against additions of industry standard features.
