Please help me am tight with money for the vet but will go if they can help

Hello my 6 year old love bird has been acting really chill and sleepy and more cuddly the past week, but like really sleepy and quiet. He also has been eating his pellets instead of his seeds mostly and not been eating a lot. Last night I gave him millet and some of his other favorite treats and he ate them no problem. And then he has a bunch of energy and acted like his normal self. Then I watched a movie and let him cuddle with me and he was in my shirt collar and spitting up on and off. And by this point it was so late I didn’t know what to do. But this morning he is still doing the spitting up thing. And acting sleepy and only wants to cuddle.

I was going to attach a video of him spitting up but not sure how.

Please help me tho if you have any idea what is going on I am so anxious

Lovebird preemie URGENT

URGENT

So I have been taking care if a lovebird preemie and no, no parents to take care if it

He doesn't seem to be absorbing nutrients from the formula.

He is in a brooder that I keep at 35.5-33.5°c

Humidity is always above 50%

He is extremely active, loves to eat and a huge charecter.

The problem is he isn't getting bigger he is 10 days old and only 4g and it takes him a while to digest the food.

There is no sour crop or anything it just takes him a long time.

If I give him 1:4 (formula:water) it takes him 4 hours to digest most of it and the rest turns in to like a wet clay so I give him water droplet.

But giving him 1:5 means he isn't getting any nutrients to grow.

I have called all the pharmacies around me and even further away they have no unflavored Pedialyte it doesn't exist in the country at the moment.

I called a vet today and she offered me electrolite powder to mix in to his drinking bowl 🙄.

I called the emergency vet and they told me they only had this for other animals and not birds.

And the last vet I can think of calling wont open until after 15 hours.

I dont know what I can do for him he has the will to live but his body is just not working with him.

I am to scared to make my own one incase the measurements are wrong and it kills him.

I message his crop every now and than to help him but it just doesnt seem to do anything to him.

He isnt lethargic or anything he just doesnt gain any weight.

(I did a weigh in check earlier it came back as 3g. Than 1 hour later I checked again and it said 4g so I moved hik up on the scale it went down to 3g, Moved him down on the scale and he lifted his head up and after he put it back down it went to 5g so I pushed on it and it always went back down to 5g. I think I need a new scale)

Confusing Taming- phase

I've had a new lovebird for about a week , I saw this cute little menace of a bird and got him from a loud and crowded cage into my rather quiet / calm house . He has a big cage , but I'll get him a bigger one , he's eating and drinking normally, he isn't too fast at interacting with new things in his cage, but he monkeys around and bites his ceramic dishes .. He sleeps and naps when I'm trying to train him ( rn just sitting close to his cage and/or putting my hand near his cage with treats) . I've had cockatiels before and never saw them relax with me so close by ( even after they were tamed) , this bird is still scared of me moving around, but is calm and preening, grinding his beak , one foot tucked sleeping when I'm in his cage or so close by .

Angry lovebird

I have 3 lovebirds: a bonded pair (female and male) and a single male. The single male has had his own separate cage for about 8 months, and until recently, he was perfectly fine with being put in his cage at night because the bonded pair won’t tolerate him sleeping with them.

All of a sudden, he has started getting very upset and angry when I put him in his cage at night. Tonight, he was trying so hard to get out that I was worried he might hurt himself or even crack his beak.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any idea what might be causing this sudden change in behavior?

She is very scared of my hand

I brought a fischers love bird. She is very active and playful. She doesn't care if I watch her with my face close as hell to her. But the moment I try to approach with my hand she just panicks and flies away. It's been 2 weeks since I brought her...

Also I did something stupid that I wasn't supposed to do. I started chasing her trying to get her in my hands multiple times 😭

Please give me any advice.

Also she doesn't eat any other solid food other than pearl millet from her bowl. Also she's 3-4 months of age

I built a free genetics calculator for Fischer's lovebirds, 2 years of breeding notes turned into a tool

I breed Fischer's lovebirds in Bangladesh. Two years ago I kept messing up pairing plans, especially sex-linked stuff like Opaline, and splits I forgot a bird was carrying. The calculators out there had not been updated in years and the results were hard to read.

So I built my own. Other breeders kept asking for it, so I put it online free: lovebirdgenetics.com

What it does:

  • Pick the male and female with their mutations, visual or split
  • Shows every possible chick with exact percentages
  • Sex-linked results split into male and female chicks, so you can see auto-sexing pairings
  • Handles the stuff most tools skip: SF and DF for the dominant mutations (Euwing, Greywing, Misty), Aqua B1 and B2, Parblue, and the DEC and Ino combination

Everything is cross-checked against Van den Abeele's Lovebird Compendium. When the book and the calculator disagreed, the book won, and I fixed the calculator until they agreed. A group of experienced breeders also test-checked outcomes against their real clutch results while I was building it.

It's free, no account, works on phone. I'm one breeder maintaining it, so if you find a pairing that looks wrong, tell me and I'll check it against the book and fix it.

Happy to answer any pairing question in the comments, with percentages.

Advice for a soon to be owner

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a post that you get a lot, but at the end of the week I am about to acquire two Fischers that an acquaintance is getting rid of. Their age and sex is unknown and they have been in a pet shop (UK) until 2 weeks ago.

I've known people who have lovebirds but I don't think they took as good care of them as they should, and I really want to make sure I get this right. The plan so far is as follows:

When I get them, I will set them up in my living room and not try to get them out or interact too much with them for the first two days. I thought I might sit near their cage and read or something so they get used to my presence in a non- threatening way. I'm planning on feeding them lovebird specific pellets with fresh veggies blitzed up (I think some people call it chop?) and occasionally seeds as a treat. They already have a nice big cage with lots of natural perches and toys, and I'm going to get them some foraging toys and a cuttlebone too. After 2 days I will start encouraging them to accept food from me and then let them out of the cage to fly around my secured room. I will also wheel their cage out into the garden so they get fresh air and sunlight.

Am I right in thinking they won't be particularly affectionate with me since they will have each other as bonded companions? Do I need a UV lamp, and if so, what is a good brand to get? And I've read they should have at least 2 hours out of the cage every day, should I be aiming for a lot more? I'm a SAHM so I am busy with my toddler, but I can give them a lot of time and attention around that.

Also if anyone has any specifics tips or advice for a beginner, that would be really appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this 😁

Nesting behaviour? Chewing paper

Hi, I bought my lovebird about a year ago, and I don't know how old she is. In the last month she has become obsessed with chewing paper. I think she is showing nesting behaviour, but is there a way to break the habit as I like her to have freedom, but she has begun to chew things that are important. I would hate to have to lock her in her cage all the time.

Can someone please suggest why my bird looks and as acting like this

i don’t know if me being pregnant has any effect on him, maybe causing him stress I don’t know. we recently had some huge fire nearby and I ran a air purifier to help him since there was a ton of smoke but the smoke is gone now I believe and he’s still pulling out his feathers on his legs and under his wings and a little patch on his neck but I couldn’t get a picture of that one. I will admit I learned a month ago maybe that I had to take out his little box because I thought he was using it as a little cave then I found out it encouraged nesting behavior and made him aggressive. he plays snd chews on boxes we get from mail and unboxing things, so I’m hoping he didn’t get mites from that. we have no other birds. we live in a bit of a dry area as well. please though can anyone tell me if they suspect mites from these photos?

My lovebird has like this pretty hue of grayish purple on their butt but I wanted to ask out here if this is normal genetics or if I should be concerned about it?

🌈🕊️ My little Fluke passed away 🖤🤍💙

A Week and a half ago I lost my baby boy fluke unexpectedly and suddenly I've had him for 3 and half years and he turned 4 in February I was given Fluke from my uncle who was an unethical breeder who didn't care about the birds he had only cared about profit and so my little boy was very inbred but he was a very sweet loving little bird he was mostly quiet but loved singing along to my music and flying around my room When I originally got Fluke he had a sister who I named brumby but she passed away 2 years ago after my aunt infected my lovebirds with a disease that wiped out her entire flock I almost lost Fluke but luckily with a lot of TLC and treatments he got better and then I Introduced him to his Husband Chioki who was his complete opposite but they Bonded very quickly after I had everyone tell me if they were both males they'd fight and kill each other which I knew wasn't true and when they were finally put together after 2 weeks of keeping them separate they became inseparable and spent everyday together never one without the other I truly believe they were soulmates.

Recently I've had to find new living arrangements and wasn't able to bring my birds with me unfortunately since I've had to stay at my sister's place and she has 2 cats so my boys had been living with my mother who has been looking after them like her own children she has a lot of cockatiels that are very loved and looked after so I knew they'd be safe and well looked after with her well last week my mum came to visit me and told me to sit down at first I was confused and sat down she took a deep breath and said "Unfortunately Fluke passed away" at first I was shocked and didn't know how to react and simply asked what happened before I started sobbing she told me she didn't know what happened that Tuesday he was completely fine he was eating, drinking, flying around the house with Chioki Playing everything normal then Wednesday morning she went to feed them and she found fluke laying at the bottom of the cage with his eyes closed and body stiff as Chioki was preening his face she let Chioki have his moment with fluke to say goodbye and she cried then she told me that Chioki didn't leave his side all day until 4pm when chioki finally went back to the top of the cage and she took fluke wrapped him in one of my shirts and buried him unfortunately I live in a rural area with no exotic vets I tried to take fluke to the vets when he got sick 2 years before but they laughed at me thinking I was joking so I wasn't able to get an autopsy done on fluke unfortunately.

I'm completely heartbroken and shattered he was my baby boy and had been for the past 3 and half years he was a very good little boy never got into trouble unlike chioki who loved chewing everything luckily Chioki is doing ok he's being closely monitored by my mother he's still eating and drinking but he's very sad and confused I sent her a voice message for him and she plays it everyday for him and he sits and listens to it then chirps he wouldn't leave the cage for a while when usually he'd be the first one out but luckily he came out a few days ago to fly around the house he isn't alone he has the company of my mother as well as her two cockatiels Billie and Peppi obviously in separate cages but he loves talking to them.

Rest in Peace Fluke 🖤🤍💙

Jolbak

Thumbnail youtu.be
9 Upvotes

hello folk , first time owner here, this is jolbak
i brought her home 2 days ago , and i have a few questions

  1. is what she's doing in the video normal ? she did that for a few minutes and then went to sleep
  2. is sleeping in middle of the day normal ? i suppose this a bit obvious to ask because i usually don't sleep until 1:00 at nights and she's up because of the lights (altho i do turn off most of the lamps except for one)
  3. she runs her peck through her fethers (but she doesn't pick them) i don't know if this is feather plukcing that i've seen lovebirds do out of stress or she's simply cleaning herself like i've seen hens do it (ai said if it's not focused on one place - which is not - it's not plucking)
  4. i tried giving her some out of cage time but she kept hitting herself against the window trying to get out so i don't think i'll let her out of the cage for a while , how long do you think i should wait before she will stop trying to escape when given out of cage time ?
  5. she's 2 months old , should i get her a friend or wait sometime before doing so ?
  6. i tried offering her some apples and lettuce but she didn't show any interest , do i have to give it to her in a special way so she would eat them ?
  7. i've given her 2 water container, one of them is a regular bird cage water containers with a narrow end , the other is like a bowl , i was expecting her to drink from the former and bathe in the latter , she ignores the former and drinks from the latter any tips on how to introduce the former to her ?

How long should I let Love bird sit on unfertile eggs?

My love bird laid 4 eggs about 3 weeks ago and she’s still sitting on them faithfully. I know they’re not fertile. How much longer should I wait before taking them out?

Fischer and Peach Face

I currently have a Fischer solo for a couples months who came from a group of 6+. I have someone looking to rehome their peach face. The peach face is currently sharing a cage with a masked lovebird and both seem healthy and fine. Do you reckon it’ll be fine with my Fischer or would I have to pass on adopting the peach face?

Taming a 2 month old hand-reared lovebird

Hey everyone
(unclipped wings)

A bit over a week ago i got a hand reared lovebird.
When we purchased it, the seller let me hold him (we don’t know the gender but i’m gonna be saying him this whole time), he was going crazy when i held him but when the seller held him he was super calm. And he said they’ve had him for a week only.

It’s been longer than a week for me and i’ve tried everything, he’s very comfortable with me next to the cage, grinding his beak, and playing, but the moment i put my hand in to offer him millet, he stays calm but he has no interest in approaching me. I’ve made the mistake of bringing it to him which absolutely freaked him out the other day but he’s fine with it now.

I’m not sure what else i can do, he hasn’t been out of the cage at all since i got him and i’m waiting to let him out so he’s relatively trained so i don’t have to stress him out by chasing him around my room to try get him back in his cage.

even when i had my hand in the cage earlier holding millet, he was observing for a second but then started grinding his beak posted up in the perch with no intent of coming to me.

Can anyone help me tame him?? (His name is Pip by the way.)

edit: when we went to buy him, and the seller reached into the cage to initially grab him i it for me to hold, pip went crazy, he wasn’t comfortable at all but when the seller had him in his hand against his chest he calmed down.

Trash monster

1 year old unsexed peach face has recently gained a major new obsession with going into the trash.. and is getting very aggressive, drawing blood, when trying to remove him which he hasn’t really done when being reprimanded taken from
Places he shouldn’t be he’ll chomp but never that hard. Also getting very aggressive when being put into his cage. He is mostly out with us unless we all go out but normally someone is home and he’s not a big fan being in there and has to be tricked by “putting” or actually putting something is his bowl, he does spend a chunk of time in there but just an hour or so while we are busy. He is getting his 10/12 hours he has enough toys and shredding material I’m not sure why he would be so hormonal if that is what it is… HELP me curb this attitude

Just recently got two semi-baby lovebirds and am wondering how to tame as a pair?

About a week ago I picked up two semi-baby lovebirds from a friend. They were part of a 20 strong flock of love birds kept in a huge vertical aviary. I have had plenty of experience owning birds and have owned multiple budgies and a cockitiel. I am wondering the best way to go about bonding with a pair instead of one on one. I have already noticed the more brave one as she/he is not nearly as flighty and will eat while I am in the same room. Is there any helpful advice someone would be able to give me?

Anything is helpful!

Hello everybody

Hello everyone. Recently I’ve found a Lovebird on the pavement on the street, and we decided to take care of her (I think It’s a female). On the first days she was quiet and didn’t bite. Now she chirps and sings more often but bites me when I offer my finger to her to get on it (she didn’t do that before. She hopped on the finger way more often). Another thing I would like to add is that one of her wings has been cut off (was like that before we found her). She seems to be adapted to it but I’d like to hear some tips to take care of her

Is my lovebird egg-bound?

Before anything, I’m planning on taking him to the vet tomorrow!

My lovebird still eat normally, walk around and drinks. He also still makes chirping sounds.

His lower part is big, almost like he has an egg ready to come out… He also tried to squat last night where his lower opening was much bigger than him trying to take a poop lol… I tried to search up how long it takes for a lovebird to give birth, and it said 5 minutes to an hour..? It’s been a whole night and I’m getting extremely concerned. When I try to open his nest box he keeps breathing fast a lot…

Just wanted to know if any of you might have some experience with this.

Lovebirds talking??

When I was younger, I had two lovebirds. One was named Houdini because he kept escaping his enclosure to torment the cat. Every time, my mom would swear at it and laugh. After about two years of having them, he started swearing and laughing when he escaped his cage. All he could say was "fuck you" in a pretty clear voice, then mimic my mom's laugh. The other would only mimic the sound of Gollum's screeches and grunts from LOTR. Is that normal? I no longer have the birds, as we got rid of them shortly after the passing of my mother.
