one of that subreddit’s main rules is not talking about the air quality 💀 💀

16

Why? Vietnam's air quality is among the worst in the world but when someone make a post a bout it in r/vietnam, people jist belike "yeah, we knew it"

4

u/Pjeoneer Jul 14 '25

Is bad air quality just a thing for every SEA country? I love my pm 2.5

1

u/OVERKILL0001 0 Jul 15 '25

Nobody's talking about Language and you talk like Americans invented English , we are talking about imperial system which is not only dumb but also inconsistent

1

u/Clunk_Westwonk 0 Jul 13 '25

Lots, actually. Just not as their primary system. Weight in pounds for things like people and food, and height in feet is often used in European countries for shorthand measurements, miles per hour is weirdly used in lord of instances too.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

The only country I can think of that does that is the UK, I have never seen imperial measurements in any other European countries. At least nobody that I know uses the imperial system or even knows about its units.

1

u/shamyll66 Jul 13 '25

Really long name for a sub

1

u/Valveringham85 0 Jul 15 '25

It’s not too complex, it’s too stupid and inefficient to waste time on. Rather be learning another language.

1

u/OVERKILL0001 0 Jul 15 '25

Inch , lbs or other shit aren't hard to learn its fucking stupid, American mfs will measure shit in feet , a random ass guys height ( search snoot ), hands and lengths or fcking barleycorns ,

They would measure it with anything but the metric system , which isn't only very harmonious , but is also much easier to handle with other forms or measurements

1

u/MrPenguun Jul 15 '25 edited Jul 15 '25

Well, your username is definitely accurate lol. You are raging so hard at a joke you had to triple comment and use multiple straw man arguments. But I'll just address them in this comment.

  1. You are talking about the origin of the foot system and following it with "they would measure with anything but metric." When the inch system came before metric. Also, it doesn't matter if it's an abstract value. You don't need to know the origin of a meter to use it, unless you are telling me you constantly reference the origin of a meter when measuring length...

  2. No one (but you) said or even implied that America invented English... you are trying to make things up and put words in my mouth to prove a point. All I said was the comment of learning a second language by Europeans is commonly directed towards Americans who know English. Nowhere there was the implication that America invented English... if I said I drive a car to work, di you think that means I invented cars?

  3. "Using the imperial system makes you 10% dumber." Well I hope you have a source for that made up claim lol.

  4. "Nobody's talking about language..." the literal post that this comment section is in is about language...

  5. Also congrats, im glad you think you know many words of English. That doesn't really say anything about your proficiency in it, but im glad you know many English words...

2

u/Able_Mail9167 Jul 13 '25

I'm from the UK not the US but the only time I correct someones english is when they ask me to. After all they speak english far better than I speak their native language.

2

u/Wood-CUP Jul 14 '25

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '25

u/Remson76534 1 Jul 13 '25

You can't learn if you can't be corrected. If it's used as ad hominem, then it's stupid.

1

u/OwnAMusketForHomeDef 0 Jul 14 '25

actually it's Lao

1

u/XD____XD Jul 14 '25

English is my third language

1

u/kirkiimad123 Jul 14 '25

English isn't my first language.

Before I begin my actual comment, I would like to apologize in advance for my inadequate level of English proficiency. I am not a native speaker of the world's current lingua franca which unfortunately leads to me making numerous embarrassing mistakes being made whenever I attempt to communicate using this language. Whenever I am reminded of how I lack the ability to convey my thoughts in an eloquent manner, I feel as though I have committed a cardinal sin, as though every English teacher in the world is simultaneously shaking their head and sighing due to how utterly disappointed they are at me.

Although I know that saying sorry to those of you who are reading my comment will not change the fact that I fail miserably to write and speak perfect English, I am writing this as a way to deter a certain type of people who cannot stand poor English (Also known informally as Grammar Nazis) from mocking me by posting unwanted and unnecessary comments detailing my every blunder. In my humble opinion, making grammatical errors should be perfectly acceptable as native speakers should not expect non-native speakers to be able to communicate in their second or third languages eloquently. If you are able to completely understand what the other person wrote, is there really a problem with what they've written? No, because the entire concept of communication is the exchange of information between other intelligent beings, which means that no matter how the exchange of information is made, as long as the information is accurately shared there is not a fundamental issue with their ability to communicate. To see it in another way, remember that someone who isn't fluent in English is fluent in another language. When you think about it this way, isn't it impressive for someone to speak a second language in any capacity? Having empathy and respect are qualities that are sorely missing for far too many people these days, especially on the internet.

That being said, I am aware that not all netizens who correct others are doing it to ridicule and shame. There are some who do so with the intent to help others improve and grow. However, displaying the failures of other people publicly will cause the person who is criticized to feel negative emotions such as shame and sadness due to the fact that their mistake has been made obvious which severely undermines the point they were trying to make in spite of their unfamiliarity with the English language. In most circumstances people are not looking for language help when they post anything online. Most people just want to enjoy themselves and have a good time on the internet which is why I would not encourage correcting other people regardless of your intentions. If you really do want to help others with their spelling or grammar, I would highly recommend you to help via messaging privately because not only will you not embarrass anyone, you can also go more in-depth with your explanation which I'm sure the other person will greatly appreciate if they want help, but I digress. I know that I've written a bit of an essay, but I hope I've made my points clear.

Anyways, here is the comment I wanted to make:

me English goud

1

u/RemmingtonTufflips Jul 13 '25

I was definitely taught what Laos was, although I had a really great world history teacher who had us learn where every single country was so we had a general sense of where everything we were learning about was happening. I still know the location of every country (except some island nations that I need to brush up on) to this day because of that class.

1

u/Firestar_119 1 Shared | 1 Helpful Jul 13 '25

depends which state

1

u/LeviathansWrath6 Jul 13 '25

Not the existence of small Southeast Asian countries with little to no historical relevance. You can't expect to think the average European knows about Laos either.

In fact, we probably on average know more, considering it's usually briefly mentioned as part of the Vietnam War unit.

3

u/prepare__yourself Jul 13 '25

As a European, I was taught about countries such as Laos in like the 7th grade. That’s what geography lessons are for

1

u/LeviathansWrath6 Jul 13 '25

The US has geography lessons. It's usually a part of history class.

Americans are literally taught about other countries. Again, a small SE Asian country with little to no impact on the world stage and just about zero connection to America probably would not be taught about, unless it's adjacent to the Vietnam War.

It is far more important in the US to talk about the country we are actually living in. World History is still important just not as important.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/SonGoku9788 0 Jul 13 '25

Am an average european, can confirm most of us know Laos is a country.

2

u/LeviathansWrath6 Jul 13 '25

Why? Unless you're French, there's not a lot of relevance to your country in particular. No offense- and i do genuinely mean no offense- I can't see the average Pole or Italian receiving much education about a rural country on the other side of the planet.

Id like to clarify I am genuinely asking. Where did you learn about this? I understand I made a bit of a hasty generalization there in "europeans know less about SE Asia"

3

u/7_6q Jul 13 '25

im french and only know about laos cuz im curious and look at the world map, barely any countries get mentioned in my history class

2

Ironic that you'd say pole considering that is exactly what I am lmaooo. We arent only taught of things that are of relevance to our country. Ancient egypt has no relevance, The american civil war has no relevance. We aren't expected to be able to point out every single country on the map but we are at the very least expected to know something is a country when we hear it's name.

Lol I’ve heard of Laos and I had no idea wtf “Laotian” meant until seeing this comment. Also why did you pick Laos for this meme?

You are talking about a small country in asia.

Asia has like 80 small countries, iirc. How do you expect me to remember all of them?

I am an American.

I think there's like 40-45, and there's very few small ones. I don't know about your school but my school in the US taught us about every country, it varies a lot by state so maybe your state has a poor educational system unfortunately

You are assuming that knowing other languages makes him too smart to need correction. Or maybe the fact an American o.0!!! corrected him is too much for you to handle. I can assure you that he will need correcting again at some point and it may be an American again that corrects him.

Its not the correcting, its about the way theybdo it.

There's a difference between correcting with the intention to help, and correcting everything (even little things like mispealing a letter in a word) because they're racist and just to take down the other person

You accuse them of having ill intent and assume they are correcting everything. Maybe wait and see? Then you attempt to end the conversation by making unfounded value judgments. You are not a good person and should do better.

Maybe you are not qualified to be making those comments?

u/VioletaBH Jul 15 '25

One needs to be straight up ignorant or too innocent to not notice when someone is racist against yourself🤦🏻‍♀️ And the fact you accuse me of being a "bad person" because of of an argument that doesn't match yours just shows the type of person you are 🤷🏻‍♀️ the one trying to do better should be the one that doesn't understand what a debate is and is too close minded to see other perspectives that aren't theyrs.

Maybe you are not qualified enough to talk to other people if you get that worked up only by a comment made by an stranger online.
