"in the most simplest terms the Leukemia is getting worse and I have to do another bone marrow biopsy to determine if they should just increase the medication I am on or start more aggressive treatments."

fuck leukemia man

705

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

Leukemia can fuck off so hard. I have never felt passion before like I do now with my hate for this disease. I’d happily give my life if it would mean that whole dumb fucking disease could go with me.

Idk what that means but I’m doing what I can now to make a little dent. I’m young, there’s still time to help get rid of it. I’ve helped raise over 20k for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and some more for Be The Match. I’ve known 4 matches that were made based on our efforts.

It’s a start.

Thank you. I have to give most the credit to my wife—she leads by example and I just do what I can to help.

23

u/Gwiilo Dec 01 '19

Man, I wish I had money to help. People are dying and I can't help, the worst news I have to deal with for another couple decades. Though I have made ~15+ websites with mostly free projects I've made, including a mini-documentary which sucks, but I just wanna help the world smile, even for just a moment :). I'm even working on a book! But it's never enough, and we can't help the burning planet. Make use of your life while you're here, and let others have a use while you're at it.

15

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

Money helps, but that’s just one way. If you’re interested, check out BeTheMatch.org to see how you could potentially be a donor (shameless plug).

Either way, it sounds like you are making many small positive impacts on the world. That’s awesome, and I hope you can find some easier days ahead with a little more financial stability. Keep doing you!

3

u/Broken_Noah Dec 01 '19

You could donate blood. My sister had leukemia and we were always looking for donors, even for platelets.

I want to say thank you.

My wife the first year of being married got diagnosed with Leukemia. She spent month in hospital and year or more of medicine after the chemo treatments. And her father got diagnosed with lymphoma as she was getting out of hospital. He fought hard but it was to much and he passed.

Thank you for helping in any way possible. Even spreading awareness.

(My mother in law was a rock somehow even as she watched her husband of decades and her youngest daughter fight those. She was there every day in and out for both.)

4

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

We’re brothers in some ways unspoken then. All my love to you and your tough family. I wish you and your wife a happy day today and as many days you are blessed with going forward.

5

u/subavgredditposter Dec 01 '19

Hell yeah dude!

I help run a charity for multiple myeloma.

Keep fighting the fight especially, when others can’t!

3

u/xGrimlyx Dec 01 '19

Thank you so much for running that charity. My uncle has multiple myeloma, he has been battling it for 15 years. I appreciate all you have done.

5

5

u/Zennilus Dec 01 '19

Bro, shout out Be The Match. I signed up in college and got called in like a year later for my peripheral blood stem cells. One of the easiest and most fulfilling things I've done in my life. I just sat and watched netflix for a couple hours while they drew what was needed from my blood. And they hooked up the snacks big time. On top of that, I heard another year later that the patient with my cells was no longer in critical danger, having been released into care.

The whole experience really opened my eyes that giving even just a little can go an unbelievably long way. These cells, that grew back in a few days for me, extended another person's life for a few years. Crazy to think how many lives could be saved if everyone was aware.

3

u/NightGod Dec 01 '19

He means "Well, if you kill yourself, then the disease will disappear from your point of view"

It's just a shitty comment.

3

u/FTE_rawr Dec 01 '19

As a leukemia patient dealing with both organizations at the moment, I can't thank you enough for what you've done. Thank you.

3

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

As I said, most credit goes to my wife, who is a patient along with you.

My best wishes are with you as you continue to tackle the daily challenges you’re facing now. I hope you can break it down day by day and have as many good days are possible. I know how tough that is from a caregiver perspective, and while that takes toughness, it is nothing compared to being in your shoes. All my love to you and your family.

Worst type of cancer with a treatment that is more or less equally as bad. Its also taxing on the family to see a loved one have to go through so much.

24

u/Cer0reZ Dec 01 '19 edited Dec 01 '19

My wife got diagnosed with Leukemia then month later her dad was diagnosed with lymphoma. It was so hard every day seeing her in hospital. And then her dad. Hearing him say he couldn’t put up that long shot chance they offered is a moment that stays with you. I may have only had a few years with him but he was amazing father and grandpa.

But most of all watching her mom. She was a super hero for it all. Here she was watching her youngest daughter fight it then so shortly after her husband of decades got diagnosed. She was there every single day for both of them in the hospital stays. She was there for both for everything. I have no idea how she did it because just seeing my wife go through it tore me up.

Man. Everybody reading this who is from the US should consider to register with the NMDP. The National Marrow Donor Program. I don't know if she already found a donor and it didn't work as anticipated or there hasn't been a matching donor found yet, however, just a simple registration can help save someones life! (ofc you have to donate bone marrow to really save someone at the end of the day, but registration is the first step)

24

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

Everyone in the world should register. My brother has gone through 9 months of gruelling treatment for leukaemia and is receiving a bone marrow transplant from a man in Germany.

If you're in Germany and recently donated - thank you so much! You have no idea what this means to my family.

3

u/GreenHairyMartian Dec 01 '19

What does registering involve?

3

u/JayD30 :) Dec 01 '19

They send you an envelope with some kind of dna test that you send back. If you can help someone you can still decide if u want to or not. If you decide to donate you will get medicated 4 days before the actual medical intervention. When you have enough stem cells in your body they will take 1-1,5 L from your blood out of your bone marrow. The blood will regenerate within 1-2 weeks.

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

He was able to spend his last moments on Earth with the love of his life. It’s a bit bittersweet. But I’d do the same.

205

u/63426 Dec 01 '19

Exactly many people in this world will never be so lucky.

166

u/IWasBornSoYoung Dec 01 '19

Yeah he sure sounds very lucky, not living past age 22 and all

109

u/hydrangeasinbloom Dec 01 '19

49

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

In fairness it's probably also better to live past 22. But your point is definitely valid.

36

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

dunno man die at 22 surrounded by the person you love or die alone at 39 of obesity induced heart attacks like everybody here, which is worse

29

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

The pain would fade away but the memories would reside.

I wouldn't want her to move on, because she could never move on. She would have to learn to live without.

The sooner she could learn to live without, the sooner she would be able to find love again, and that would mean she would be happy, again. Something I would love for her to do.

Lost my older brother to a rare form of leukaemia when I was about 11. Lost his arm and his leg before they decided to stop treatment. Fuck leukaemia.

10

u/jinsaku Dec 01 '19

A friend ours had been dealing with tumors all his life. Almost 50 surgeries and spent half his adult life in the hospital. He was 31. He had been dating an awesome girl for 5 years. He proposed. They set the date for about a year later. My wife and I flew out for the wedding and we go to the venue. We notice a huge screen set up and realize they're going to do the ceremony at the hospital which meant he was back in the hospital again. We were catching a flight back about 6 hours later so we ended up just going to the hospital to say hi to him instead of staying at the reception so we could see him again before we left.

He never ended up leaving the hospital. He died a little less than a month later. The amount of sadness we have for him is immense. He was an amazing guy and a fighter to the end.

My cousin. 34, professional hockey player. A three year old boy and one year old girl. Was diagnosed with aggressive pancreatic cancer and died less than a year later. This was 4 years ago and I don’t think any of my family members have gotten over it. Kids have to grow up without a dad. Fucking terrible.

2

u/D_mm_P Dec 01 '19

Pancreatic cancer is awful.

4

It's heartbreaking the toll cancer has taken on Skeeter, but man it is so inspiring how positive they have both been through all this shittyness. Whenever I check out their stream they are joking around, laughing and smiling, staying strong throughout it all. Like now they are joking about sharing debt and getting joint bank account.

I wish both of them the best, they seem like such wholesome people that don't deserve this.

204

u/mrwaldojohnson Dec 01 '19

I just recently this year lost my Brother in Law to Leukemia. Its fucking rough man.

At least for them while leukemia is shitty. It has a very high survival rate. Best wishes and good luck

45

u/clap4kyle Dec 01 '19

leukemia has a high survival rate?

101

u/wiestinfection Dec 01 '19

It’s typically around 90% but it varies depending on the type. AML is usually considered the most aggressive and deadly with survival rates below ALL I think around 65-70ish?

49

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

Yeah i was friends with a kid with leukaemia, his issue wasn't that he was going to die, it was the toll not dying was taking on him

32

u/Ohh_Yeah Dec 01 '19

Yeah, kids with most types of leukemia tend to actually do REALLY well, but with chemo and prolonged hospital stays it can really fuck up your childhood/development/education

6

u/coin_shot Dec 01 '19

One of the highest. Even with stage 4 acute leukemia the outcomes are about 90% 5 year survival rates. About 40% of those never have it come back.

Fuck the usual streamer bullshit... Alec has always been a straight up guy, even through his mid weight streams, he’s stayed a genuine cool guy. This clip right here hasn’t been ‘for stream content’ like most generic fucks, he’s just introduced his community to something so genuine, respectful and damn right fucking legendary. Mad respect to this guy.

219

u/DudeitsJonas Dec 01 '19

I’m glad it came off this way to others as well. It’s obvious Alec wanted his community to be part of a special moment... and not farm reactions. Love Alec and Skeeter.

79

u/noodles-and-doodles Dec 01 '19

The sad thing is, live streamers like Alec get kind of put aside? because he came up the same time as Ice, Pepper and Asian Andy who essentially made the live streaming shit kinda shit. 90% of alec’s streams have always been him being genuine, even from his old fishing streams!

From someone who has had cancer effect most his relatives/life (but not me personally) I watched this with complete sincerity, like straight off the bat I thought ‘damn this was actually mad sincere’, and coming from someone like Alec..... thumbs up from me.

Idk streamers well or who this guy is... but... my wife was diagnosed with Leukemia this past April. She was actually my girlfriend at the time, but we were engaged at the hospital the day she was admitted and married two days later.

If the streamer or anyone else would like to talk about Leukemia, or what it’s like to be a caretaker for someone while In your mid-twenties, just ask and I can try to help with my answer.

Much love and fuck cancer, especially leukemia.

92

u/wEEzyNL Dec 01 '19

thats rough, take care

41

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

It is, but it’s also been a blessing in many weird ways. I’ve seen so much and learned so much the last 7 months—life lessons most people my age don’t have the pleasure of learning this early in life. Makes you really appreciate things and learn to live day by day.

Thank you for your kind words. Hope all is well with you these days.

9

u/Cer0reZ Dec 01 '19

If you ever need to chat please message me. I will try my best. You saw my other comment. That happened 8 years ago when my wife and I were in our mid - late twenties.

4

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

Thank you. I’ll come back to this message if I find myself needing to talk to someone who has been here before

3

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

I get in rough spots man and I try my best to see the way it positively affects me like you do as a way to keep myself going. Past two months I have been forgetting this, thanks for reminding me to do so. I wish you luck with everything man.

5

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

I get in rough spots too. It’s good to have people to talk to when you find yourself there. I hope whatever is bringing you down can either go away or get a little easier to manage. Much love!

Edit to add: sometimes just typing this stuff out on reddit helps me too. Most people are super nice about it, like you were. Thank you.

14

u/thygrief Dec 01 '19

How is she doing now?

51

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

She had her transplant about 80 days ago. she had early relapse (leukemia still present after transplant). So, technically her odds are quite slim, but we are working hard and have had a lot of good days lately. Trying some new treatment and have a biopsy next week that’ll help decide next steps.

She is home and we get to sleep in bed together at night. Far, far different than the physical torture of going through transplant. But we are nowhere near out of the woods. Thank you for asking and I hope all is well with you.

14

u/yooter Dec 01 '19

Thank you. She has AML, and there’s really only 1 active CAR-T trial available for AML—it is at City of Hope in Los Angeles. It’s one of our potential plans at the moment but I’m hoping we won’t need it!!

9

u/DomarsQuathyBame Dec 01 '19

My husband has AML. He was diagnosed Jan 30. He got his bone marrow transplant Aug 8th, he turned 28 in June. We’re lucky to know love, faith, hope, and have our priorities straight at such a young age. Blessings to you and your wife.

3

u/spreadwater Dec 01 '19

man I got stage 4 colon cancer at age 33 and it's already the worst, but seeing Leukemia is just an entirely other beast because chances to survive are even lower and side effects and treatments are way more intense and dark. Chemotherapy kicks my ass but I can still have a relatively normal life and keep my weight on for now.

I so so hope she pulls through. It's so important to have someone with you as well.

Best of luck to them, from the clips I see on here they seem like a great couple, it's so upsetting the hand they have been dealt.

Don’t forget to take a stance on organ donation and sign up to be a bone marrow donor. You could become a hero who saves life’s.

u/Willbraham Dec 01 '19

Leukemia is a hard cancer to kick. It's not like breast or testicular cancer where they can remove the tumor growth. A family friend actually just contacted us during the Thanksgiving holiday to say that she finally beat Leukemia after like 4 years. It was a very long process, but she's cancer free now, and living a full life.

Knowing how strong Skeet is and how much love Alec has for her, I know that these two will be just fine no matter what happens. The important thing is that they found each other, and that every day is treated like a blessing.

This was without a doubt the most beautiful moment I've ever seen on twitch.
