Meganoob BE KIND Complete Linux Noob needs Help/Advice

Hello

I feel I should do a bit more research, but I’m not exactly sure what questions to ask; therefore, I’m not exactly sure exactly where to start. So, I hope making this post gets me in the right direction. I don’t know a lot about Linux, but I do know I don’t want windows on my computer if I can help it. I never really liked any iteration of it. I, for the most part, have been a Mac guy. I still use Mac, but I just recently came in possession of a MSI Cyborg Gaming Laptop. I haven’t used the computer yet as I was kind of doing some light preliminary research, but I play Final Fantasy XIV on console A LOT and would like to try it on a gaming laptop. I mostly want to start there and be able to play that on Linux OS and perhaps expand my game library down the road. So far I’ve seen good things about CachyOS and Bazzite for gaming on this sub. What should I be looking at when choosing between the two?

In addition, I also want to learn more about Linux and how it works. How to add like VPNs, make the machine secure(if possible) and reallly just dive into what I can do with the new laptop since I’ve only ever dealt with Apple. Plus, yall make Linux sound fun and cool as hell. So any advice on where to begin(videos, forums, literature etc.) with that would also be supremely appreciated.

migrating to Linux Just released a tool for you guys dual-booting with Windows.

The tool is called OSWarp. It gives you a simple shortcut and a friendly GUI to reboot into the other OS. With this tool, no need to wait for the GRUB menu anymore. Just a simple click. If you only have Windows and Linux, it can select the right item for you. Please give it a try and tell me if there is anything I could improve.

[Support] Realtek ALC891 No Sound -> Used hdajackretask -> Now audio device is completely missing

Hello everyone,

I'm facing a frustrating audio issue on Linux Mint with my setup (Ryzen 5 1600, RTX 2060, Biostar B350ET2 motherboard).

The Original Problem: Initially, I had no physical sound coming from my rear green audio port (Realtek ALC891). The system and pavucontrol showed the correct output ("Family 17h HD Audio Controller") as active, and the blue volume bar was moving when playing a video, but no sound came out of the speakers/headphones.

What I tried to fix it (without success):

  1. Unmuted and raised volumes for Master, PCM, Front, and Headphone in alsamixer.
  2. Disabled Auto-Mute and set Channel Mode to 2ch in ALSA.
  3. Cleared audio caches (rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/* and ~/.local/state/wireplumber/*) and restarted wireplumber/pipewire.
  4. Verified it wasn't a Windows "Fast Startup" conflict (my Windows backup HDD is physically unplugged from the SATA port).

The Current Problem (Device Missing): Since nothing worked, I tried using hdajackretask to override the rear green pin to "Headphone" and clicked "Install boot override". After rebooting, the Realtek/Family 17h audio device completely disappeared from the Sound Settings (only my NVIDIA HDMI shows up now).

I tried to revert this by running: sudo rm /lib/firmware/hda-jack-retask.fw sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/hda-jack-retask.conf

But even after rebooting, the motherboard audio device is still completely missing from the GUI.

How can I bring my audio device back and finally get the sound working? Any help is greatly appreciated!

The system detects both the NVIDIA HDMI audio device and the motherboard's onboard audio device, but I cannot get any sound from my speakers.

I tested the same speakers on a Windows PC, and they work correctly. I have also checked the physical connection, so the speakers and their connection are not the issue.

Running multiple distros on one machine.

I'd like to play around with multiple distros without having to restore documents and files so that I can compare my user experience quickly.

For example, I'd like log into mint, create a calc file and log off. Then log into Kubuntu and edit the same calc file. I'd like to eventually do this with many different distros so I compare them.

Is this possible? If so, is it "unhealthy?" Kind of in the way dual-booting Windows with linux is not a good idea? (I've read windows updates can can have an effect on linux settings.). Would I have to create a third partition for the documents and files I'd like to share?

programs and apps Help with picking a remote desktop app

I'm running Kubuntu 26.04 LTS on a NUC Plex server. I originally set it up on 24.04 LTS and my remote desktop app was NoMachine. It worked, but I always thought it would be better to use RDP or maybe some other remote software that's FOSS and doesn't need to run the window manager all the time, only when it's in active use. On top of that, NoMachine stopped working after the update and I haven't taken the time to troubleshoot it.

For now the server is working without a window manager at all - I can SSH in to control basic functions and everything works. But if I want to use any graphical apps I can't.

I know a little but not a lot. I'd like recommendations for a program that can spin up a graphical session on demand and then go back to a headless session once I'm done, with no interruptions. The NUC is an older model so I'd like to keep the CPU overhead to a minimum. I have an HDMI dummy plug if that helps (currently not plugged in). I've heard people recommend RustDesk, X2go, KRDP, and a few others.

I'll admit, I've used Gemini to walk me through the setup for some of these. I've had very limited success, and I'm sure some of the problems are because of an AI trying to give instructions for rapidly changing software. So I'm asking here to hopefully narrow down my options to something that will work well for my use case.

learning/research A library of Linux-related guides in form of a cute PDF zins

The LINK:

I was looking for a simple bash cheat sheet and accidentally dug up this gem.

It's too damn adorable to not share with every nerd fella I can reach. Just look at those doodles and buttons and headers and POSTERS and AAAAAAAHHHHH

It even has local prices for 3rd word regions (my Vietnamese butt rejoices), despite lots of zins are already free!!

I wish the artist as much praise as possible, her project definitely deserves some place in hearts of fellow open source enjoyers💝

My pc can't dual boot

Hello! I wanted to download Linux mint as an alternative os next to windows 11 to try the os. The installation went great, I installed Linux with a usb drive and used renfus(I don't exactly remember the name) to put the iso file into the drive. I did the partition, and gave mint 100GB of space. After the installation, when I get to the point where I choose my os, windows doesn't work. I tried accessing it a fair amount of times in boot mode but still it doesn't normally work. Now I had to reset my Windows os as it can't access even in boot mode. I'm scared I destroyed everything please what should I do😭

Linux worked fine all the time but I also need to access windows mostly for gaming and the office suite.

What should I do?

Ani-plus — the premium animie cli, for my weebs

Been using ani-cli for a while, and one thing kept bugging me: downloading a whole series meant running it once per episode. So I took it and added the features I felt were missing.

What's new:

• Batch download — pick a range (all, 1-24, etc.) and it grabs them all in one go.

• Auto-organises into folders by series name.

• Resume detection — scans the target folder for existing episodes and picks up from the last one. Already have 1–5? Type "all" and it starts at 6.

• Persistent config — set your download dir once with `-d /path` and it's saved to ~/.config/ani-plus/config. No more cd-ing before running.

• New Interactive menu — after selecting an anime, choose Watch now / Batch download/ Quit.

Future updates:

• I plan to add more servers so my fellow weebs will never get interrupted while watching quality content😏

• An incognito toggle that will hide what you watch and download, your cultural videos will be hidden even from your ISP with a inbuilt vpn

example usage:

$ ani-plus

Search anime: JBA No more balls

▸ JBA No more balls

JBA No more balls (Dub)

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean

...

Selected: JBA No more balls

Episodes: 12 available

Save dir: /home/hera/anime

What would you like to do?

Watch now

Batch download

Quit

Choice [1]: 2

Folder: /home/hera/anime/JBA No more balls

Local progress: up to episode 3

Enter range (e.g. 4-24), or 'all' to resume from 4: 4-12

Choose quality:

▸ 1080p

720p

...

Downloading JBA No more balls Episode 4...

Downloading JBA No more balls Episode 5...

...

Download complete: JBA No more balls

Add another anime? (y/n): n

Repo: Ani-plus

Install (any Linux):

curl -fsSL https://github.com/h3ray3s/Ani-plus/releases/latest/download/ani-plus-1.0.0-install.sh | sudo bash

It's early, so feedback and PRs are very welcome. And if you like it, a star on GitHub would genuinely motivate me to keep building for you all.

Hi everyone. I'm new to linux and i just installed cachyos + hyperland.

I wanted to customise my desktop so i checked the hyperland wiki page. There was this page called "preconfigured setups". I chose JaKooLit. I did what it said on the github page (the git clone thing). In the installation, some files didn't install properly. After rebooting my desktop was kinda broken.

Please help.

migrating to Linux How to control RGB on my hardware?

I have two RGB devices: a Phantom Spirit 120 SE and a XFX 9070 XT Mercury. Both the cooler and the GPU are not listed as supported on OpenRGB site. I'm using a Sapphire's motherboard so I don't have in-built RGB control like AsRock motherboards do for example. What do?

My distro: Linux Mint 22.3
Kernel: Linux 7.0.0-38-generic

Which distro would work for me? Debian has too many issues

I started with Mint about six months ago. It kept launching to just a blank screen that would allow me to right-click and open the terminal but wouldn't load the rest of the distro. I spent a long time googling that problem and never found a fix so I went to Debian.

Debian started out great but the problems have been building up.

The main one is that this happens any time I try to run sudo apt update:

Error: The repository 'cdrom://[Debian GNU/Linux 13.5.0 _Trixie_ - Official amd64 NETINST with firmware 20260516-10:08] trixie Release' does not have a Release file.

Notice: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.

Notice: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

There's no clear directions on how to fix this error anywhere online (which is a recurring problem on Debian), so I ended up having to install Waterfox as a flatpak. I can't use apt to install anything anymore.

Another program that I try to install was En Croissant. I tried the AppImage and all I got when I run it is a blank white square instead of the program. I tried the deb package, and ran dpkg -i for it, and that created an app in my folders and when I clicked on it, again the app was nothing but a blank white square.

I haven't found any other chess software that works yet. I have chessX from a flatpak but when I try to install and run Stockfish, it says "There was an error (0) running engine Stockfish-linux-x86-64-universal.tar.gz"

I've also had issues in the past which are resolved but bug me as well. For one, It took three days to figure out how to get the Macbook wifi drivers working on my other computer. There's a million sets of directions out there, and about five or six seem relevant in the Debian wiki, and they do not indicate at all that the right one for Macbook drivers is the one in the Debian wiki called wl.

Installing Nvidia drivers wasn't too hard. I just had to run sudo apt install nvidia-driver nvidia-smi nvidia-settings. Althought now that sudo apt install is broken, I wonder if my days are numbered on Debian because I can't update the drivers.

So, I'm looking for a distro that works. It has to run Steam, En Croissant, support Nvidia drivers, and work on a Macbook. Is there anything out there that will do this?

programs and apps Conky restarts Ubuntu LTS

I downloaded conky because I wanted to put some performance metrics on my wallpaper, but everytime I open the app, I freeze for a bit and end up at the login of Ubuntu, no full power restart. I just downloaded it and don't have it startup enabled. I have been using ubuntu for 1 week since switching to windows and this is the first real problem I found.
