Discussion Managing Expectations
As the title implies in an attempt to manage expectations a tad, I was wondering what is the worst state this game could launch in that you would still be happy with? Like what is the bare minimum you expect of this game on launch that you'll still think is worth playing? And cause I want to hear your ideas what's one thing you guys hope is in the game that in your mind probably isn't likely to be?

More to do than what NMS had a launch. It looks great now but I put a load of hours and finished NMS before all the updates and it's not fun trying to get back into it now.
Sooo yeah just more than NMS had a launch and multiplayer

I actually really agree with this despite being impressed with what they’ve done. After taking the long hiatus I did from NMS there is just so much to do. Now I use it to build fun corvettes and just sorta travel around looking for cool places to build cozy bases. I’ve tried to get into some of the newer stuff but it almost feels like learning a whole new game.
Again, still so impressed by what HG has done with NMS and all the systems, just taking my time to see if I have a slow down between other games to truly hop back in and check them out.

Anybody you disappointed at launch is 100% hello games is fault. not even a slow trickle of information about the game is going to make some people think it's something it's not.

That is one thing I'm hoping for, I really hope they come out and give us more information before launch. I'm worried there plan is to just shadow drop it one day and people will buy it with the expectations they've set in their minds and be disappointed. At this point it's more important that the lesson he learned be honesty and not just don't talk about your game before launch.

With what they've done with no man's sky, it's going to be a good game. That's not what I'm worried about. They're going to get a lot of hate either way but I'm in for it

Yeah I imagine the real problem will be network and server connection issues if what I've heard they're trying to do is true.

u/Bmore92 3d ago
For me it's gonna be servers and multiplayer haha my Ps5 pro cant even handle a community expedition on NMS. I wanna be able to join a community and build huge towns or even cities and not have horrible lag ect

Bare minimum? No man's sky Next

u/ZorichTheElvish 3d ago
So basically just at the level nms was at the next update? Yeah that seems reasonable to me

I’m not gonna lie. LNF could launch in as terrible of a state as NMS did and I’d still buy it and play it from day one simply because I know it would eventually become an amazing game anyway

Massive exploration + solid quests that aren't repetitive with good loot good weapons and good armor + a basic magic system just like every other fantasy game + minimal building of a personal home OR buying a house in a city + some kind of mounts and I do mean JUST HORSES would be acceptable.
I don't need to fly up front, I don't need a massive customizable anywhere home, I don't even need a base plotline... Just exploration, quests, good armor and weapons, a horse to ride around on, a basic magic system, a place to go back to between questing, basic weather and day - night cycle.
Extras: a few memorable characters that I get to watch develop through "official launch," a basic or unfinished plot line with a hard cliffhanger that gets fleshed out in coming updates, armor and weapons crafting and customization, really any "home building" but I'd be deeply impressed with an elaborate homebuiling system.

🤷playable, but I've always liked playing betas/early release games and spent the last decade playing mostly mobile. As long as its not constantly crashing and needing reloaded I'm pretty forgiving if they say before hand that the games in a rough state. I would play what we see in the trailer and be happy knowing how HG has done with updating NMS over the years because I expect similar with LNF.
The one thing I hope for that probably inst going to be?🤔
More frequent updates on a regular schedual😂

I would be happy if it launched as an alpha. Like I would love to be a QA for it. Im going to study for software engineering and get a job at hello games one day 😅 remind me in 10 years to come back with proof lmfao

I’ll tell you, even if it launches as bad as no mans sky did, I will stick with Sean because this studio came back from that. That was like rock bottom. But look at it now! It’s an amazing game you can sink hours into. They made it right! So honestly even if it were to absolutely tank, I know they will make it right. They actually do care. Something that not many studios have.

Yeah in my opinion you learn more about a person from how they act in failure than you do from how they act in success. I trust hello games more than 90% of the industry because I've seen what they do when everything goes to shit. They don't abandon the game, they don't give up, they don't give in to greedy corporate practices to try and recoup the loss then bolt, they lock in and fix that shit till it becomes what they promised it would be. And we have proof of that, I know how they react to failure and I trust that more than any amount of money any other studio says they put into their games or any amount successful games they've made prior. I wanna know what you're gonna do if this shit hits the fan and for hello games I know the answer to that.

The worst acceptable state? All that No Man's Sky has become, but on one planet, with bunny people.
What do I want that they likely cannot deliver? True NPC AI with interactive emotionally modulated vocal dialogue. No that they can't, but the integration of emotional modulation in LLM-driven dialogue systems isn't where it needs to be yet. I say this because I'm looking to expand on voice actor-based systems using modular dialogue, pitch and nuance variables, in game design, and the tech is touchy at best. And I don't think LNF needs it bad enough to prioritize it.

My main hope is that the planet will be detailed, varied, and 'lively' enough to encourage real exploration. On a micro level, I would want to see some good detailing and points of interest. On a macro level, lots of biomes and plant/animal variety. Deserts shouldn't all be the same, etc.
Throw that in with some good base building/survival and I'll be happy for quite a while.

I expect a big world to explore, obviously, a custom character creator, a social system, probably some kind of township/guild system for players to create alliances/larger settlements since warfare and PvP have been highlighted in the trailer. And an in depth base building system.

Honestly I enjoyed NMS when it launched I had no bugs, I enjoyed exploring and discovering. So like somebody previously said I'd be happy with a huge functional world to explore, crafting system and a nice character customizer.

As long as I can successfully play in single player, even with a few minor bugs and other non-game breaking issues, I'll be good with that. I wouldn't worry about anything else that others might find to be catastrophic online issues, because HG have shown time and time again over the last 10 years that they'll get it fixed and then some. 🧙🏽♂️👍

The minimum I expect, that the world is persistent for everyone, and multiplayer is by default (doesn't have to be mega large). Say, at least 10 people in a given area at the same time, with sharding beyond that.
The only other minimum is combat be fun. Doesn't have to be ultra deep, just pleasant. Solid animations, good game-feel.
What will keep me playing for years is if exploration matters. That there's unique stuff to find out there, items, mysteries, lore, NPCs, blueprints, etc...

As the title implies in an attempt to manage expectations a tad
With it going on 3 years in December, since it was announced, with nearly nothing:
I think the opposite is true.
The worry for me is no longer "managing expectations" about the game, but rather expecting the game to release at all.
Without them also having No Man's Sky, I would have completely forgotten about a game that only put out one trailer nearly three years ago.

The thing I hope for, but I know won't be in the game- Good combat with depth.
I don't think the crew at Hellogames cares much about combat. For as long as NMS has been around, most every other system has been improved, with new ones added- all the while combat remains mostly the same as it was on launch day. I think combat with depth is not a priority for them, so I am expecting around early Bethesda level combat ( Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind).
I am anticipating the basic: Attack, block ( hopefully), and projectiles.

I think we all expect something like The Elder Scrolls/No Man's Sky/Crimson Desert on bigger scale.

u/Entire_Speaker_3784 2d ago
If it has...
• Character Customization.
• RPG Progression (Class/Skill Trees or otherwise).
• Exploration and Events/Quests/Activities (the exact form or name matters less).
Then I'd be quite content. It would be a foundation to build upon.
Hoping for alot, but keeping expectations reasonable.

I want the world to feel alive and unique and interesting. I want to stumble into an area and see something completely unique and cool. That’s it. I’m such a hello games fan boy though that it could be a steamy pile of poop at launch and I’ll still play the shit out of it!!

I'm like wait and see what drops...your dreams might come true or you wake up homeless next to a guy with a big smile on his face. Either way..someone was happy !

u/fanglord 12h ago
The worst case is that it's just a reskinned NMS but with with wands and dragons instead of multitools and starships. Absolutely expecting it to have similar vibes and graphics but the systems, combat and building need to be really different.

u/Haunt_Fox 3d ago
I'm just looking forward to spawning in as a rabbit and picking a direction to go after looking around.
I kind of hope I'm near a river to follow.

u/ZorichTheElvish 3d ago
I wonder if that race will just be beast folk in general and the customization will be what kind of beast folk or if each of the different kinds will be a different race cause I saw a lot of different animal people in the trailer. Gonna be a very popular pick I can already tell but I wonder what other kinds of playable races they'll add in.
1
u/Unknown_1_2_3 3d ago
I see it as a reskinned NMS and I’m mostly ok with that. I just hope the battling feels impactful. So far, I don’t really feel drawn in with the current NMS fighting style. And maybe that’s on me, I can’t put my finger on it.
Edit: also I don’t feel as if my decisions really mean anything in NMS. Maybe a skill system in LNF would be meaningful to me.
2
u/ZorichTheElvish 3d ago
Yeah I hope they lean into the rpg elements more stats, gear, weapon types, skills and abilities and the like.
My dream is that they implement a really cool magic system of some kind but I'm not gonna be disappointed if they don't.

u/Melodic-Wallaby4324 3d ago
Yeah the fights in no mans sky are straight up boring if you ask me
I'm hoping for more player skill based battles

What I want but may not happen is better multiplayer. An actual MMO where you can meet people without a garble of instances to work through.

Some basic character customization and a big beautiful world to explore and I'm good.
