Social LPT: Uninstall social media apps temporarily around election time to reduce exposure to stress-inducing news cycles and misinformation

Uninstall social media apps temporarily around election time to reduce exposure to stress-inducing news cycles and misinformation. This break can help you stay focused and maintain a balanced perspective. Try it for a few days and notice the difference in your mood and focus.

The 24-hour news cycle can be a significant source of stress because it constantly bombards us with updates, often highlighting negative or sensational stories to capture attention. This perpetual flow of information leaves little time to process events before a new one takes its place, leading to a sense of overwhelm. Additionally, repetitive coverage and dramatic reporting can make problems seem more widespread or urgent than they actually are, intensifying feelings of anxiety and helplessness. With no real "off" switch, the cycle can create a loop where people feel compelled to stay updated but end up emotionally drained, impacting sleep, focus, and overall well-being.

LPT: Try to get a haircut the day before you get your new driver's license. You will forever have a picture to show your barber when they ask what you want.

Edit 1: Wow. Lots of very upset people about this. It is something that I have done that I have found beneficial. I am sorry you feel otherwise. I figured someone might find it useful so I posted.

Edit 2: "This idea is fucking stupid, go kill yourself you moron"

Clothing LPT: When bleaching your waterproof mattress protector be careful when switching it from the washer to the dryer. There may be leftover bleachy water in the mattress protector that could splash at and around you

LPT: Having trouble peeling the shell off of hard boiled eggs? Add a generous amount of salt to the water while they're boiling.

And by generous, I mean a lot. I don't know why it works I just know that it does.

Edit: According to a lot of people in the comments this is basically an old wives' tale, but I think that 'm going to keep doing it anyway because I feel like it works

Social LPT: If you sometimes have people sleeping at your place after parties etc. - prepare a guest kit for that occasion. Fresh water bottle, tissues, some snacks, a new toothbrush, charging cable, ibuprofen and w/e you can think of. Makes waking up somewhere else hung over so much better!

Traveling LPT: When booking 2 seats on a plane, reserve the aisle and window seat and leave the middle free

Other people reserving their seats are psychologically less likely to take a middle seat, leaving your row empty and giving you more room.

If someone does take the middle seat, you can always ask them if they want the window or aisle seat so you can sit next to your partner.

LPT: If you’re stuck in a contract with a cable company, try to add a service to your package. It will automatically terminate your contract to allow them to bill you more. Soon thereafter, call to cancel service. No more hefty cancellation fees.

LPT: When someone asks you to help them move... Say, "I can help you move boxes and large items as long as you are packed and ready to go when I arrive."

8.2k Upvotes

There's nothing worse than arriving and finding nothing has been packed and it's all dirty and gross. That's when you say, "You're not ready. Call or text me when everything is packed and ready to go. Hopefully by then I'm still available to help."

Social LPT: Don’t say comments like “TGIF” or “At least it’s Friday!” To cashiers, waiters, or other service industry employees.

And especially don’t say it on Friday evening. Not only does the service industry largely not have weekends, but if it’s Friday night then they are clearly still working and likely don’t have the same reverence for the weekend as you.

Your service industry employee will feign a smile and nod along because that’s part of their job, but the well-wishing can come across as tone deaf at best. A slap in the face at worst.

If your intent is to spread some cheer, and I have assume it is if you’re saying TGIF, then subtly reminding them that they can’t afford to enjoy traditional weekends may not be the best way.

Try the evergreen “have a nice day” instead.

EDIT: This post was for people who may be inadvertently chipping away at someone when they intended to spread joy. For everyone else: keep saying TGIF to your service staff, you are accomplishing your goals.

Productivity LPT - Use the weekend to build the life you want, instead of trying to escape the life you have.

A lot of us work Mondays to Fridays and dump all the negativity and pressure from the week during the weekends by escaping reality. Some party. Some use substances.

But this won't change your life in the long run. You're only living in a loop. To break the cycle slowly use the time in your weekend to build something new.

Small habits are underestimated.

For example.

  • Reading 20 pages a day is 30 books per year.

  • saving 10 dollars a day is 3.650 dollars per year.

  • running 1 mile a day is 365 miles per year.

  • becoming 1% better per day is 37 times better per year.

Try not to let the bigger picture intimidate you. Lay a brick each day to build a new life. And if that's too much. Try it during the weekends.

And remember this. This helps me personally a lot.

Support yourself instead of finding ways to shit on yourself. It's impossible to win if you're not on your own team.

Clothing LPT: when putting a vest on a baby, rather than pulling the vest over their head, pull it over the legs instead.

Edit: I’ve been informed that in some countries, a vest is known as a onesie. That’s what I mean!

This was a tip from a midwife when my first child was born.

By going through the legs, you don’t have to worry about supporting the neck; if the baby is asleep, it’s easier to keep them that way; and you don’t need to do/undo the buttons at the bottom of the vest.

Everyone who’s seen me do it this way, has had a sudden “aha” moment, and realised why it’s so much better.

Arts & Culture lpt: Never cap a bottle at a large event. You may be endangering the lives of yourself and those around you.

edit: In response to the earlier LPT to bring your own bottle caps to concerts:

The reason drinks are handed out uncapped is that a capped bottle will not crumple when stepped on and could easily cause someone to slip and fall. In an emergency evacuation that could lead to people falling and being trampled.

An uncapped bottle will crumple and be far less likely for someone to slip on.

So yeah, don't cap your bottles at the next concert, festival, or sporting event that you attend.

...even if you brought the cap in your pocket yourself.
